Lia Ices

Indie pop singer-songwriter Lia Ices has a new album coming out on September 16 via Jagjaguwar, aptly titled Ices, and a tour to go with it. She'll play a record release show in her hometown of NYC at Mercury Lounge on September 17, and tickets for that will be on sale this Friday (8/15) at noon. After that she'll kick off that tour with Phantogram. While her last album notably featured a contribution from Justin Vernon, she's got a much different kind of collaborator on this one: electronic/hip hop producer Clams Casino (A$AP Rocky, Tri Angle Records) who produced several tracks. You can hear two of those, "Higher" and "Thousand Eyes," below.

Alex Winston at BV-SXSW in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Alex Winston

NYC singer Alex Winston has been keeping pretty quiet lately. It's been about a year since her last hometown headlining show, but that will change on September 21 at Glasslands when she plays the Brooklyn venue with The Echo Friendly and DJ sets from Connor Hanwick (The Drums) and Peggy Wang (Pains of Being Pure at Heart). Tickets for that show are on sale now.

Her 2012 debut, King Con, is just the right amount of pop and just the right amount of indie. The video for its opening track, "Fire Ant," is below.

Lia Ices

Meanwhile, another NYC singer that it's been even longer since we've heard from is Lia Ices. She'll be at Glasslands (9/24) three days after Alex. No openers announced for that one yet. Tickets are on sale now. The video for her song, "Daphne," which features guest vocals from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, is below.

That same week, as discussed, Nashville's Torres plays Glasslands (9/25) too. And since we last spoke, NYC singer (plus fellow Sharon Van Etten pal) Natureboy was added to that show. WET is on the bill too, and tickets are still available.

Natureboy's new album, The Sweep, came out last week (7/23). You can stream that in full, along with the Alex Winston and Lia Ices videos, below...

Santigold @ Bowery Ballroom, 12/10/2012 (more by David Andrako)

As you may have seen last night, HBO's Girls won big at the Golden Globes, grabbing both Best Comedy series and Best Actress for creator/star Lena Dunham. At the same time Dunham was giving her acceptance speech, Season 2 of Girls (now featuring Donald Glover as Hannah's new boyfriend) was making its debut on the pay cable channel.

The soundtrack to Girls just came out last week and one of the songs exclusive to it is Santigold's "Girls." We've got the premiere of its video right here in this post. Shot here in NYC the cool little clip features girls from all walks of life (and all ages) lip-synching to the track and you can watch it below. The Girls soundtrack also features Sleigh Bells, Fleet Foxes, Robyn, Belle & Sebastian and more.

Santigold played Bowery Ballroom back in December and her only upcoming live date is at the House of Blues in Los Angeles on February 9. Video and Girls OST artwork and tracklist below...

Fiona Apple @ Winstar World Casino last night (via rideincircles)

The brouhaha surrounding Fiona Apple's drug arrest last week just keeps going. (They're calling it AppleGate!) Over the weekend, Apple talked about her jail experience, or something like that, in Houston. It involves two "lock boxes."

Then, Hudspeth County Sheriff's department spokesman Rusty Fleming offered an amazing rebuttal that included this bit:

Two weeks ago nobody in the country cared about what you had to say, -- now that you've been arrested it appears your entire career has been jump-started. Don't worry Sweetie, I won't bill you.
Texas state law classifies hashish possession as a third-degree felony, so according to AlterNet, Fiona could be headed back to jail for up to ten years.

Fiona Apple ended up not playing Austin the night of her arrest even though she was let out that same day, but another woman musician making lots of news lately, Amanda Palmer did.

Meanwhile in Bushwick, Bill and Hillary Clinton were hanging out with indie musician Lia Ices, Joel Cohen, Gloria Steinem and other hip cats at Roberta's on Friday.

The great Amenra is preparing to launch Mass V, the band's new LP due via Neurot Recordings on November 26th. Check out the tracklisting, album art and a teaser video below.

Flying Lotus's new album 'Until The Quiet Comes' is streaming at NPR.

The Barclays Center opens this week. Will you be going inside or protesting out?

Speaking of protests, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is on strike. UPDATE: Were on strike.

Sorry for the delay of our third and final installmet of Lollapalooza 2011 coverage, but here it is! Due to the major downpour on the Sunday of the fest, Grant's pictures were almost lost forever in a wet camera, but are now recovered. If you're just joining us, check out parts one and two first. Here is part three...

My third and final day of Lollapalooza (8/7) kicked off at Music Unlimited Stage with an opening set from Titus Andronicus. The Garden State punks began things by playing the opening track "A More Perfect Union" from their incredible 2010 LP The Monitor. Titus generally would make for a fantastic start to the day, but their sound was a bit off, and by the look on frontman Patrick Stickles's face, I think he agreed.

After Titus, I decided to calm things down and went to catch Lia Ices. This was my second time seeing the Brooklyn, NY-based songstress this year, but that did not make her less interesting. Lia's well trained voice fluttered effortlessly over the avant pop she produces. I must admit I was skeptical that she and her band would translate well to an outdoor setting. The four-piece shattered any and all of my doubts.

The next set I caught was Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.'s at the quite favored Google+ stage. The kitschy group are infectious and totally unavoidable. I stuck around for most of their set which included their handmade "Jr. Jr." light boxes on stage and, more importantly, bubble machines.

I then made my way over to watch The Cars, who again consist of their original lineup, except for Benjamin Orr who passed away in 2000. The Cars ran though many of their hits like "Just What I Needed," "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll," and a few new ones too. I didn't initially plan on catching their set, am glad that I did.

I then headed to the Sony stage where Portugal. The Man were setting up. I had caught their aftershow with Wye Oak at the Double Door on the first night of Lolla, and they blew me away. I was psyched to hear so many cuts off of their 2009 LP The Satanic Satanist. I was NOT psyched to hear that their van and trailer (gear and all) had been stolen later on that night. The van and trailer have since been recovered... and so has most of the gear!

I left Portugal's set a bit early in order to make it to Best Coast at Google+. Frontwoman Bethany Cosentino entered the stage and jokingly stated, "Fuck you, we're Best Coast." Unfortunately halfway through their set storm clouds that were hanging over Chicago all day finally burst. It poured for a good hour, letting up just before Explosions In The Sky's set.

The Austin, TX-based post rock band entered the stage stating, "I think you just saw 'us,' but now we're going to play some music." I was glad to hear some of my favorite songs like "The Birth and Death of the Day," "Six Days At the Bottom of the Ocean," and "Your Hand In Mine." Their awesome set was more than enough to keep the muddy, sopping festival-goers around.

Everyone legitimately thought the rain had let up, so I headed across to Music Unlimited for Foo Fighters' headlining set. Their set included a handful of songs from the recently released Wasting Light LP and a bunch of older cuts too. A few songs in it started pouring again and I decided to leave the festival along with Grant whose camera had officially stopped working. Unfortunately that meant that I missed Perry Farrell (of Jane's Addiction and founder of Lollapalooza) joining the band on stage for a second during "Everlong," which included the Foos playing a piece of Jane's Addiction's "Mountain Song."

Day 1 pics are HERE and Day 2 pics are HERE. More pictures from Day 3, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Arctic Monkeys included, below...

Lollapalooza last year (more by Josh Darr)

Lollapalooza celebrates its 20th anniversary this year with some huge names on its just-announced lineup. See it in full below.

The festival has obviously changed over the years. What started out as a farewell tour for Jane's Addiction with a 'touring festival' lineup that included the Rollins Band, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, and Souxsie & The Banshees, has turned into a one-weekend Chicago festival that Lady Gaga co-headlined last year. As leaked a while ago, Foo Fighters, Muse and Eminem all play this year, as will Coldplay, Cee Lo Green, and My Morning Jacket along with the reunited Cars and the continuing-to-be-reunited Big Audio Dynamite and Death From Above 1979, and a bunch of other bands which may or may not be worth the ticket price depending on how you feel about the headliners and generally seeing bands in big, hot, outdoor crowded parks (Lollapalooza happens in Chicago's Grant Park from August 5th - 7th).

Full 2011 Lineup and a couple of videos (one from 1991, one from 2010), below...

Cave Singers

Jagjaguwar reports:

"Two great Jag bands on one bill! Lovers of folk music and piano-based, experimental pop, pull out your crisp, new 2011 calendars and get ready to mark this down. Seasoned live favorites The Cave Singers will headline a spring tour in support of their upcoming album, No Witch, with their label-mate Lia Ices and her band's first US tour. Both will appear at SXSW this March at the Jagjaguwar showcase and more (details are forthcoming)."
All of those tour dates are below and they include March 31st at Music Hall of Williamsburg (though according to the tour dates Lia isn't opening that show, but we'll see). Meanwhile you can catch Lia this week in Detroit, Chicago and Indiana, and at her CD release show at Joe's Pub in NY on February 1st.

The Cave Singers' album "No Witch" will be released on 2/22 (cover art above). You can downlod "Swim Club" from that LP above. All dates below...

Lia Ices @ Bowery Ballroom for CMJ (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Lia Ices

As mentioned, and again, and again, Brooklyn's own folk siren Lia Ices will sing and play piano with her band at Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight (12/14). She shares a bill with her label-cousin Sun Airway (and Mike Wexler and Sebastian Blanck), and it will be her final show of the year and her first since CMJ when she suddenly started getting a lot of attention... which, in addition to her enormous talent, was partially related to the fact that she signed to Jagjaguwar who are putting out her LP, Grown Unknown, on January 25, 2011. "Daphne" off that album can be downloaded for the first time, above. You can also stream it below. Listen for Justin Vernon aka Bon Iver during the second half of the track.

The handclap-featuring "Grown Unknown" from the same album can be grabbed above also. All of her upcoming dates are below too...

Blood Red Shoes @ MHOW
Blood Red Shoes

After Chris left the BV Loft Party all the way back on Friday, October 22nd, he headed over to Music Hall of Williamsburg for the Blue Flowers-presented CMJ showcase for a lineup of mostly UK bands including Chapel Club, Everything Everything, and Blood Red Shoes (who toured North America with Sky Larkin in October). Pictures from that show are in this post.

The occasion (to post these belated pics)? SXSW has already announced an initial lineup of bands playing in Austin from March 16-20, 2011, and Chapel Club is on that list (and I wouldn't be surprised of the other 2 mentioned bands end up coming too). Also on the list: Lia Ices, Braids, Asobi Seksu, Wye Oak, Suuns, Sun Airway, A Place to Bury Strangers and more. Full list under the rest of the MHOW pictures, below...

Lia Ices @ Bowery Ballroom
Lia Ices

"The sweetest white lie of the CMJ Music Marathon came from the folky songwriter Lia Ices, leading her band at the Lower East Side club Pianos on Thursday night. While half the crowd chatted indifferently, she sang, "For only you I sing, for only you." Yet Ms. Ices, whose debut album is due in January, was playing CMJ, along with more than 1,000 other groups, for precisely the opposite reason. She was seeking a chance to be heard, sooner or later, by a larger audience." [NY Times]
Neon Indian co-headlined the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars?) Group CMJ showcase at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night, 10/23. After a super long week of shooting day and night, Amanda didn't make it to their midnight set. She did get to the show though and caught openers Braids (6pm), Fake Problems (6:45), Lord Huron (7:30), Lia Ices (8:30), Lower Dens (9:15), and Wild Nothing (10:00). She left before Dom. I also went to the show but got there close to when Neon Indian was finishing (I caught Surfer Blood's entire 1am set).

Did you miss Neon Indian too? The next chance to see them is tonight (10/29), at Brooklyn Bowl where they're playing with the buzz-tacular lineup of Prince Rama and Apache Beat. Tickets are still on sale, and I have a pair you can win.

Details on how you can win, with tonight's flyer (under the pics), and more pictures from the Bowery Ballroom show (sans Neon Indian), below...

DOWNLOAD: Suuns - Up Past the Nursery (MP3)

I am super bummed to report that UK band Yuck have cancelled their planned trip to the United States due to "personal reasons". They were set to play four shows (all still listed at their MySpace). One was in Philly, one was in Boston, one was the the PopGun party at Glasslands, and one was the official BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg happening Thursday, October 21st.

Luckily, the recently-signed-to Secretly Canadian band Suuns (who we have talked about a few times) have stepped up at the last minute to take their place on the bill which now looks like this:

Music Hall of Williamsburg, October 21, 2010
* The Pains of Being Pure at Heart
* The Blow
* Screaming Females
* Suuns
* Young Man
It was especially nice of Suuns since it now means they are playing two official CMJ showcases in one night. They're also part of the Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian/Dead Oceans show happening at Pianos that night:
Pianos, October 21, 2010
* SUUNS 11:45PM
* S. CAREY 8:45PM
Might as well mention that S. Carey is playing a BrooklynVegan show too, Saturday (10/23) during the day at Public Assembly (full lineup TBA). Might as well also mention that Small Black are playing Shea Stadium in Brooklyn on October 15th (Friday) with We Are All Romans and "VERY Special Guests". All Small Black dates below.

Meanwhile, Suuns (grab some MP3s above) are still out on tour with Land of Talk, though only for two more Texas shows before CMJ, but then they'll resume touring with Land of Talk after CMJ, and that's when they are back to play Bowery Ballroom on November 6th. They have also added a NYC show that takes place after their tour, at Glasslands Gallery on November 14th with BELL, Emil & Friends, and New Moods. The Glasslands show is New Moods' 7" release party, and New Moods have some shows sooner, including CMJ, too (listed below).

All dates and Suuns' new-ish video for "Up Past The Nursery" below...

Continue reading "Yuck cancel tour, BV Show included (Suuns take their place & play Secretly Canadian showcase w/ Small Black too) "

Dom @ Governors Island (more by Chris La Putt)

If you haven't heard, Dom, the ginger-fronted guys from Worcester, Mass., recently signed a deal to release an EP on Virgin/EMI label Astralwerks (release date TBA). The band will be opening for Ratatat at Terminal 5 on October 8th and 9th (Bobby Birdman also play). Both of those are sold out, but there are other chances to catch the band.

In addition to those, Dom has a CMJ show at Bowery Ballroom set for October 23rd. That's the same CMJ show that Neon Indian is playing, now with venue revealed. The killer "VFW Group Presents" CMJ bill also includes Wild Nothing, Lower Dens, Lia Ices, Fake Problems, Lord Huron and The Static Jacks. Tickets go on sale Thursday at noon.

And in addition to those gigs, Dom headliners a pre-Halloween (Mischief Night) show at 171 Lombardy (502 Varick Ave @ Lombardy St), along with Smith Westerns, Yellow Fever, Total Slacker and Sweet Bulbs. That's one night after Neon Indian plays Brooklyn Bowl.

Dom, Wild Nothing and Lower Dens are all also on board for a Stereogum CMJ party happening at Santos Party House on October 20th. And I guess I might as well point out that Dom, Wild Nothing and Lower Dens are all booked for TBA BrooklynVegan parties happening during CMJ too. Stay tuned for more details.

Dale Einhardt Jr. Jr. plays that Stereogum party too. It's one of at least six upcoming NYC shows for that band including one with Nada Surf at Mercury Lounge.

All current Dom tour dates are below...

AA Bondy

[At Union Hall on Feb. 6th] the small stage consisted of Bondy on guitar and vocals with a bassist and drummer. The merch guy told me the show was about half songs from American Hearts and half off When the Devil's Loose. The latter is more singer-songwriter style material and American Hearts features a full band sound. At times during his solo, acoustic songs, he sounded like Bob Dylan, his gentle guitar blending well with his vocals and harmonica.

The show ended with the entire band engaged in a fierce jam of improvised rhythms and heated exchanges. This was perhaps the highest point of the show and actually got the subdued crowd swaying side to side. The band finished and triumphantly high-fived each other in the tiny off-stage area while people lingered around, staring sheepishly at their fellow concert-goers. There were no cheers for an encore but their hungry eyes said the people wanted more. [JamBase]
AA Bondy and band performed at Union Hall on February 6th, with Lia Ices (who plays the Knitting Factory with jj on March 30th). What the above review doesn't mention is that members of the Felice Brothers and Elvis Perkins' band joined AA Bondy and band on stage for a bit. The audience was even a further whose who of alt-country. Jay Farrar, members of Delta Spirit, Deer Tick, and Those Darlins were all also in the house.

AA Bondy's only two scheduled shows are Double Decker Fest in Oxford, MS, on April 24th, and Hangout Music Fest in Gulf Shores, Alabama, in May.

The xx were one of three bands on the early CMJ show at The Mercury Lounge on Wednesday (10/21). Javelin and Lia Ices rounded out the bill, and their pictures are in this post.

Javelin played a bunch of shows during CMJ including the Pitchfork Market Hotel gig on Saturday night. Did you catch them?

Next up for Javelin will be opening shows for The Very Best, touring with Lucky Dragons, and playing a couple of dates with the Phenomenal Handclap Band including that December 11th show at Bowery Ballroom (tickets). The Thrill Jockey-signed Brooklyn (via Providence) duo also have a show coming up at Monster Island even sooner. All dates and more pictures from Mercury Lounge below...

The xx

UK's the xx will have already played a large amount of shows in New York City by the end of 2009, and there are more to announce. The xx have augmented their CMJ schedule with a performance at the Apple store in Soho on Thursday, October 22nd. Before that, they play at Mercury Lounge on Oct. 21st with Javelin and Lia Ices (tickets and CMJ badges at the door). Then the xx play an Oct. 23rd show with School of Seven Bells and First Aid Kit. That gig was supposed to be at Webster Hall, but it has now been moved to Music Hall of Williamsburg. Tickets are still on sale.

School of Seven Bells has a deluxe release of 2008's Alpinisms that's coming out digitally on October 13th. The first song on that, an alternate version of "Iamundernodisguise," is posted above.

The xx's November 11th show at Bowery Ballroom also changed venues - it was originally scheduled for at Mercury Lounge. It's now sold out. Finally, they play December 5th at Webster Hall with Friendly Fires. To recap:

The xx back in NYC
Oct 21 @ Mercury Lounge New York (CMJ)
Oct 22 @ iTunes Instore (Apple Store, SoHo)
Oct 23 @ MHOW w/ School of Seven Bells (CMJ)
Nov 11 @ Bowery Ballroom
Dec 05 @ Webster Hall New York w/ Friendly Fires
More TBA? I think so.

Speaking of the Apple Soho store, Phoenix was just there last week (9/24) and Ladyhawke played the store the week before that (9/15). That same day (September 15th), Sonic Youth was to release an iTunes-only four-song EP of their June performance at the store. The record never came out, and seems to be delayed for an unknown period of time. Sonic Youth play NYC's Terminal 5 on November 21st with Cold Cave and Dinosaur Jr. It's sold out, but the Feelies show happening the same night at Maxwell's isn't yet.

The xx recently remixed Florence and the Machine's "You've Got the Love." That is posted above. Florence will come from the UK to play an October 27th show at the Bowery Ballroom. It's sold out, but I wouldn't be surprised if they add another show too.

The xx's debut self-titled record comes out October 6th on Young Turks/XL Recordings. All tour dates for the xx (and Florence) and videos for the xx's two singles are posted below...

Anna Ternheim

Of all the the other Swedes Anna Ternheim (who actually now lives in the East Village) has accompanied on tour, none sounded just like her, and yet, numerous reviews abound comparing her to them. Much like indie rock cannot be pigeonholed into one neighborhood in Brooklyn, Swedish singers cannot all sing like Abba.

Monday night's sold-out show at the intimate and mostly-seated Joe's Pub marked Ms. Ternheim's last American show for the summer. A few days earlier she opened for Kristin Hersh at the Bell House in Brooklyn. In July she heads out to tour her native country's festivals to promote the release of her upcoming album "Leaving on a Mayday" produced by none other than Björn Yttling (of Peter, Björn, and John). All dates below.

Suffused with dark and disquieting lyrics, Ternheim sings of love lost and death. It seemed apt for a rainy Monday in a rather lonesome city. On stage with Anna and her guitar was a chorus of three girls, and additional male band members playing various instruments. More pictures from the show, along with an official video of Anna accompanied by Björn on piano for her latest single "You Are My Everything", below..
