WAVVES SUXX (Psychedelic Horseshit) @ BV day party @ Emo's - March 18, 2009

Washington Post: Vivian Girls, Wavves - why is everyone in a lo-fi band now?The interview continues at Washington Post's site.Psychedlic Horseshit's Matt Whitehurst: I have no idea. I don't know. It became in vogue sometime in the last year due to a few figureheads talking a bunch of [expletive] on Terminal Boredom. And now it's exploded into this thing there where Wavves is getting $30,000 to [expletive] crank out this [expletive] generic [expletive].
There's a lot of one-person things now.
Right it's one person with GarageBand and a few chords and like -- Wavves to me sounds like [expletive] TV on the Radio. That band sucks [expletive]. It's one of the worst bands to get popular in a long time. They [expletive] trump No Age because I think it's worse than No Age. No Age is just like, [expletive]. It's really [expletive].
But you're playing at least one show with Wavves down here.
Three of them, yeah.
So how do you reconcile that?
We made "Wavves Suxx" t-shirts with it spelled S-U-X-X. We got tons of people taking pictures with us in those. People are all into it. And actually Wavves came up to our drummer and our drummer had no idea it was Wavves. And Wavves took like six pictures with Rich with the "Wavves Suxx" t-shirt on. So, you know, that little [expletive]'s probably into it or something. And is probably like, Oh, it's like hip-hop, man!
Psychedelic Horseshit is on tour with Quintron. They played Santos Party House the other night. Tonight (4/24) it's at Market Hotel. Bill just talked about Wizzard Sleeve. They're also on the bill.
Friday April 24th @ MARKET HOTELWAVVES is playing a free show in Brooklyn on Saturday. Students can go get their tickets today (4/24). Crystal Stilts also play the Topshop/WAVVES show, and they're at Maxwell's on Sunday.:: QUINTRON

Eat Skull

Portland, Oregon's Eat Skull have been making noise for less than two years now, but in that time have attracted a lot of attention. They've been lumped into the popular "lo-fi" or do I dare say, "shitgaze," genre, with the likes of Times New Viking, TVK and Pink Reason. Eat Skull incorporates elements of hardcore into their songs, making their poppy sound a little more rough. After releasing a number of 7"'s, all of which sold out almost instantly, Eat Skull finally put out their first full length, "Sick to Death," on Siltbreeze Records back in May. Like Panther, Meth Teeth and White Fangs, they're part of a new generation of bands making noise outside their hometown of Portland. MTV News invaded the city for a recent piece on the entire scene including The Thermals. That video is embedded below.
Eat Skull's Siltbreeze label-mates Psychedelic Horseshit, like Times New Viking, hail from Columbus, Ohio. Though also linked to the "lo-fi" sound, PH are a lot harder and more abrasive than most. The pop element is still there, just not as heavy. Psychedelic Horseshit sound like a band that is having fun. They don't care about being tied down to a specific genre and they like to play at a very high volume. Their live shows are always a good time and LOUD. Like Eat Skull and the town of Portland, Psychedelic Horseshit and the "lo-fi" sound were also the focus of an MTV News piece. That one was previously posted.
Eat Skull are on their first nationwide tour and will be in NYC this weekend. TONIGHT (9/19) they're at Dead Herring in Brooklyn with USAisamonster and Little Claw, Sunday they play DCTV (formerly the Tank) with Blank Dogs, and Monday (9/22) they're at Death By Audio. The latter two shows are also with Psychedelic Horseshit (...hey, isn't Brooklyn Yeasayer's turf?) who are then continuing on the road with Eat Skull down to Georgia. All Eat Skull and Psychedelic Horseshit tour dates, and video, below...

photo (of Blank Dogs?) by Lyndsy Welgos

"Who are the Blank Dogs? Frankly, I'm not sure. My understanding is that it's one guy's bedroom project, a lo-fi dungeon-style operation that churns out releases every couple of days. But furthermore, what is a Blank Dog? Is the "Blank" meant to censor an expletive, like "When are those (blank) dogs going to stop humping my leg?" or "I can't believe the Bumpuses' (blank) dogs ate the Christmas turkey." Actually, this latest Blank Dogs LP, originally a cassette release, is a lot like a humping dog: A little disconcerting at first, but tough to peel away from once it gets going. With something like 10 great releases this year and last (mostly a mix of 7"'s, cassettes, EP's and albums) (many of them available for free download, go get em while you can), Brooklyn's mysterious Blank Dogs have yet to play a live show. That will change after this weekend. Exact dates and videos below...For all the musicians crafting grimy, lo-fi electro-rock, the man behind Blank Dogs takes it to another level, because it feels like he means it." [The Wire]
