Guitar Wolf photos by Keith Marlowe, Peelander-Z photos by Harriet Roberts
Most Guitar Wolf Fans express their feelings with words like "awesome!" and "bad fuckin' ass," and with good reason: Their music just doesn't lend itself to measured critical reflection. This was clear as soon as they came out in their signature black leather and sunglasses. Drum Wolf and Bass Wolf established a rhythm first, and the crowd was getting rowdy before Guitar Wolf (aka Seiji) began playing. Seiji has as much rock star charisma as it's possible to imagine, and impressed us with his heroics, aiming his guitar at the crowd like a machine gun during "Machine Gun Guitar." His stage patter, although difficult to make out, was also entertaining: "Motherfucker ... [inaudible] motherfucker!" ...Guitar Wolf's US tour included an appearance at Matador 21, a stop at Santos Party House on 9/23 for date with Peelander-Z, and a stop at Gonerfest 2010 where they met up with Oblivians, Ty Segall, So Cow (who played NYC last night with The Thermals), and many many others. The above review comes from Gonerfest, but the below belated set of pictures come from the madness that ensued at Santos Party House.
Seiji's Ramones- and Link Wray-inspired playing is amazing, but the band's overall guitar tone is perhaps the most distinctive aspect of their live performance -- a crushing, ultra-distorted rumble not quite like any we've heard before. -[Nashville Scene]

Perfume Genius @ Knitting Factory
"Perfume Genius - This is one of Matador's newest acts, and I have to admit that I never listened to their record when I got it. I actually left during the [Vegas] set and missed most of it. From what I heard from others, they were quite good - even a highlight of the [Matador] festival. Their placement after The Jon Spencer Blues Explosio seemed odd, though." [The Dark Stuff]That blurb refers to Matador's 21st Birthday Party in Las Vegas which took place the weekend before last which is when Perfume Genius, undeterred by the shutdown L-Train, played a headlining set at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn (Sunday, 10/10).
Perfume Genius will kick off a European tour on 10/18. All dates, and more pictures from Knitting Factory with opener Sebastian Blanck (no shots of White Ring, unfortunately), below...
Kurt Vile @ Terminal 5 in July (more by Matt Eisman)
Kurt Vile/Times New Viking/The Clean: That three-band bill looks so good, I'd probably have trouble sleeping the night before such a show came through Vegas. At Matador at 21, it was but the tiniest sliver of a giant, weekend-long musical pie. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the festival's lone matinee event drew a solid crowd to the Palms Ballroom for its first two acts, then packed the place wall to wall for the third.Philadelphia band Kurt Vile and the Violators (who recently played Matador 21 in Vegas) are heading out on a co-headlining tour on October 21st with The Soft Pack (who recently played two nights at Bowery Ballroom).
Kurt Vile, a rising singer/songwriter/guitarist from Philadelphia who's released three albums in two years, kicked off the day's music with his three-piece band, the Violators. The foursome delivered a satisfyingly dense curtain of psychedelically-hued classic-y rock. Really good tunes that sound even better live. If your tastes run toward Springsteen and Neil Young, track down a copy of 2009 Matador disc Childish Prodigy. [Las Vegas Weekly]
Both bands meanwhile have some dates of their own, and Kurt has some shows scheduled after then too. That includes a December 3rd show at Knitting Factory in Brooklyn with Philadelphia;s Purling Hiss (the side project of Birds of Maya's Mike Polizze) who will also be opening the Soft Pack/Kurt dates. Tickets for the Soft Pack-less NYC show are on sale.
The above downloadable Kurt track comes from Kurt's recent Square Shells EP. The Soft Pack one is a song from a limited edition, tour-only 7", titled Gagdad, that you can pick up on their tour with Kurt. The Purling Hiss track is off a new full length called Public Service Announcement being released by Woodsist on October 26th. Full tracklist, the newest Soft Pack video and all dates below...
Guided By Voices at Matador 21 (via)
"Anyone who walked into the popular casino during the three-day venture witnessed a culture shock like no other as hundreds of well-established, middle-aged rockers filled the building to see label legends Sonic Youth, Pavement, Belle and Sebastian, Guided by Voices and more. Performing inside the small and intimate Pearl, most of the bands were playing in Vegas for the first time. While NYers were fast asleep and trying to stay warm at 5AM, Matador 21 was officially coming to a close in the Las Vegas desert early Monday morning (10/4) with a two hour set from Guided By Voices. Over the course of a full-set and two encores, both Hamish Kilgour (The Clean) and Matt Sweeney (Chavez) made unscheduled appearances with GBV (as a stage-diver/crowdsurfers) as the band tore through classics like "A Salty Salute", "Tractor Rape Chain", "I Am A Scientist", and around 30+ (!) others.
"It has run smoothly but with a lot of help from the staff and all the people that are working for us," said founder of Matador Records, Chris Lombardi. "It's come together. We were very conscious of all the potential snafus that could arise and so far it's been fun."
Potential snafus were rife but any real problems were kept to a minimum during the first two days, besides Pavement's performance on Friday. Having paved the way for some of the most well-known artists of our generation, (think Weezer and Ben Kweller), the '90s rockers had continuous difficulties with their sound that caused problems both onstage and offstage for the band.
But that didn't seem to faze the crowd, which was made up of fans from all over the world, all who were more than ecstatic to see their favorite Matador artists. The festival went so well, actually, that it's kind of surprising." [The Rebel Yell]
The label's 21st anniversary party kicked off on Friday with sets from Pavement and Sonic Youth (who played the Hollywood Bowl in LA) along with Chavez, Fucked Up, Guitar Wolf (whose flights were delayed, forcing a late Friday night performance), and Harlem. Saturday featured a headlining set from Belle & Sebastian (who recently played Williamsburg Waterfront), in addition to Spoon, Superchunk, Cat Power, Perfume Genius, Come, Esben & the Witch, Cold Cave, and Girls. Collaborations seemed to be the order of the day: Yo La Tengo hopped on stage with The Clean, Hamish returned the favor, Ted Leo joined Liz Phair...
A selection of videos and setlists from the festival, below....
"Not to be dramatic but Chavez is kind of blowing me away. Also, brodeo up in Parkside." - gillianmae
"look, if you were not at the chavez show at parkside lounge last night, you were somewhere not good enough. and that's final. #chavez" - coolingpie
"Holy Cobra is Chavez really playing at Parkside Lounge right now?
Anybody there?" - Oksana Baiul
"Chavez show ruled. So glad I paid hundreds to fly to Vegas instead of $7 at Parkside Lounge #oppositeofthat" -uhhAnnie
Chavez @ Parkside Lounge, 9/29/2010 (photo by Jen Barzyk)
Thank you to the helpful people who pointed out that Chavez were playing a secret show at Parkside Lounge in NYC last night (9/29). It was a warm up for the (much more expensive) Matador 21 Festival happening in Las Vegas this weekend.
If you missed it, and you can't make it to Vegas, don't fret. The Vegas sets by Chavez, along with Pavement, Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Guided By Voices, Liz Phair and others will be streamed live (and on repeat) courtesy of MySpace Music at myspace.com/matador21.
The full stream schedule, Chavez's NYC setlist, and a few more pictures (thanks Jen and Quilty) including one of the setlist (which replaces parts of song names with "Marsh"), below...
Dutch band Bettie Serveert was originally scheduled to kick off their US tour today (9/23) with a show in Cambridge, MA before scooting down to Hoboken to play Maxwell's Friday night followed by Southpaw on Saturday, but thats all off now due to visa issues. The NEW tour kickoff will happen on Tuesday (9/28) in Toronto and the Maxwell's date has moved to 11/3 (tickets are on sale and previous ones will be honored), the Milford, CT date moved to 11/4 (ditto), and the Southpaw date is cancelled.
The rescheduled dates happen at the end of their tour which also includes a show at Bowery Ballroom on 10/29 (a few days before the new Maxwell's date). Tickets are still on sale for the Manhattan show (and no opener is listed).

On the Matador 21 schedule you'll see that both The New Pornographers and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists play the final day of the festival, Sunday, October 3rd. It was also just announced that those same two bands will share a bill again two months later in NYC. Tickets for the Monday, December 6th show at Terminal 5 in NYC go on service-fee-free Presale today (9/14), AmEx presale Wednesday at 11am, and then general sale Friday at noon.

Ted Leo has an even busier schedule between now and December, and as usual, good taste in openers. In September and October he'll hit the road with So Cow and then Kevin Seconds and then Screaming Females again.
All dates and stuff below...
Las Vegas Weekly: As far as additions to the lineup ...Tickets go on sale at noon for the Guided By Voices show happening at Terminal 5 (with Blitzen Trapper).
Matador's Gerard Cosloy: We will be announcing, I would say at a minimum, three more bands. I would say they are not necessarily going to be the biggest bands in label history. They're gonna be bands tied more to the label's old days. Actually, in one case, someone very, very new as well. They're not gonna be headliners, let's put it that way
So no Boards of Canada, I assume?
That's correct, yes.
A lot of people are asking about Mogwai.
No, they have other stuff they're doing overseas at that time, which is unfortunate. We would have loved to have had them be part of this.
And Interpol has dates in Europe.
Yeah, that's correct.
Mission of Burma is also a no-go, correct?
Yeah, we did ask Burma and Roger [Miller] unfortunately has Alloy Orchestra commitments that weekend.
Rolling Stone reported Liz Phair as confirmed ...
Yeah, that I will neither confirm nor deny (laughs).
How tough was it getting Guided By Voices to reunite, especially with that lineup?
We just kept asking. We just kept asking. And I think ultimately Bob decided it would be fun.
Doug Gillard plays Bruar Falls tonight.

Fucked Up @ Newtown Barge Park
"Earlier [Friday], we sold out of our initial quantities of tickets and hotel packages for Matador At 21 : The Lost Weekend, taking place October 1, 2, 3 at the Palms Casino & Resort in Las Vegas. Said sales took somewhere between 2 and 15 minutes to complete, and we sincerely apologize to anyone who was stymied in their attempts to purchase tickets. One of the bands playing Matador At 21 is Fucked Up who played a Brooklyn show at Newtown Barge Park on June 26th. A second set of, slightly NSFW, pictures from that show continue below...
We are putting additional tickets on sale tomorrow morning (Saturday, July 10) at 9am pacific time (noon eastern) via Ticketfly. There are limited quantities of tickets paired with hotel rooms ($225 per ticket plus a $99 per night room charge, 4 ticket limited per person) a few remaining VIP tickets ($399 each plus a $99 room charge per night, two ticket limit) and weekend passes only ($250.00, no hotel reservation required, two ticket limit).
We’re pretty certain these tickets will sell out very quickly. At present, we cannot guarantee any additional tickets beyond this batch will be offered for public sale, but if that change, we’ll certainly let you know. [Matador]
The Temper Trap are playing Terminal 5 on October 1st. Tickets go on sale at noon.
1.) What is the cost and how do the tickets / hotel rooms work?"Remember, tickets go on sale this Friday at 9 AM Pacific via ticketfly.com, and at the two Zia Records locations in Las Vegas at 10 AM Pacific."
The cost of the show starts at $199 for a three-night pass plus an additional $99 per night to stay at the Palms. You can have up to 4 people in one room and the option to purchase up to 4 tickets. After the initial swathe of tickets is sold out, the cost of the show goes up to $225 for a three night pass. You must buy hotel rooms with these tickets - sorry if that seems extreme, but it's how we were able to make this work economically with this lineup of bands in an intimate venue. We negotiated this rate for you and it's a good one. There will be all-night events going on at Palms, and the concept is for a familial event with label staff, artists and fans all mingling and staying at the same site.
VIP tickets are available for $399. These tickets (21+ only) will get you:
- Reserved Seating at the Pearl (AT THE FRONT)
- Access to Opening Party on Friday with open bar with staff and bands
- Priority access into afterparty shows
- Priority access into sky villa parties
- More TBA
For Las Vegas residents, there will be 100 tickets available for $199 at the two Zia Records locations in Las Vegas, for locals. These do not require purchase of hotel rooms. Tickets will be awarded via lottery at both locations, so please, don't attempt to camp out at either store early that morning or the night before.
In response to demand, we are also offering a limited number of a la carte passes for $250 for those who choose not to stay at the Palms. These will be available Friday, July 9th with a 2 ticket limit via the Ticketfly site only.
Once the a la carte passes and the local tickets at Zia are sold out, ALL TICKETS WILL REQUIRE THE PURCHASE OF A HOTEL ROOM.
2.) Will there be an installment plan to buy tickets?
Yes. Details will be available on the Ticketfly site. (The installment plan does not apply to the Zia tickets.)
3.) Can I purchase multiple hotel rooms at the time I purchase the tickets?
4.) Can I purchase a ticket without a hotel room if I'm staying in someone else's room?
No. The only tickets without rooms are the Zia tickets and the limited $250 a la carte passes. Sorry, but that was the only way we could make this work. [FAQ for Matador at 21: The Lost Weekend]
In related news, and as you may have read yesterday in the comments...,
"Tickets for "The Lost Weekend" aka Matador's 21st birthday celebrations at The Palms will go on sale this Friday morning at 9am, PST. Here's the details you've been hassling all of us about over the last week (and don't think we don't appreciate it)...That message is from Matador Records, and is continued below...
Matador's 21st birthday fest will be happening in Las Vegas October 1st-3rd. For it, they've pulled the cream of the indie-rock crop. Previously speculated headliners Belle & Sebastian and Pavement will be there - on top of that, Guided By Voices will be reuniting to play, "in the band's "classic '93-'96 lineup!" The most recent show for GBV was New Year's Eve 2004/05.
In addition to those three, the lineup includes Sonic Youth, Spoon, Yo La Tengo, Cat Power, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, New Pornographers, Superchunk, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Guitar Wolf (who also play NY), Chavez, Girls, Fucked Up, Harlem, Cold Cave, Shearwater, Kurt Vile and Jeffrey Joe Jenson. More will be annonuced July 5th.

DOWNLOAD: Teenage Fanclub - Baby Lee (MP3)
"Dogged adherents of the "if it ain't broke" philosophy of music, the Glaswegian quartet have been plying their own brand of harmony-laden guitar pop for two decades and little changes here. Pedestrian? Yes. Derivative? Certainly. But an alchemy exists within the band allowing them to find something newly life-affirming in the most well-worn elements of their Byrds-indebted sound. Current single "Baby Lee" might be twee but boasts a melody so sunny it could persuade grown men to skip down the street. And among this record's bittersweet pleasures, drowsy closer "Today Never Ends" is porch music of a timeless kind." [Guardian]Teenage Fanclub's new album, Shadows, was just released overseas in Europe (where they're touring at the moment in support of it). Merge Records puts the album out in the U.S., on June 8th (the last day of their UK tour). Download "Baby Lee" for free above.
In July and August, Teenage Fanclub will play some European festivals. In December they play the Belle & Sebastian-curated "Bowlie 2" ATP in Minehead. Before that they join their fellow Scots for a show in Brooklyn (and maybe a TBA tour?).
Anonymous pointed out that Matador is hosting their 21st anniversary festival in Las Vegas from October 1-3. That makes it seem very likely that Belle & Sebastian will play that too while they're visiting. Las Vegas Weekly reports...
...the host venue appears to be the Pearl at the Palms, according to a source with inside knowledge. And, yes, Pavement is set to headline, a figure close to the band has confirmed; the just-reunited '90s alt-luminaries play LA's Hollywood Bowl on Thursday, September 30, and will perform in Vegas that weekend... Oh, also on that Hollywood Bowl bill? The legendary Sonic Youth, whose latest album, 2009's The Eternal, was released by, ahem, Matador Records. Hmm...Teenage Fanclub's album tracklist and dates below...
