Handsome Furs in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Handsome Furs

With a heavy heart the time has come to let all of you know that Handsome Furs are no more.

The most important thing that needs to be said right now is how extremely grateful we are to all the fans all over the world that showered us with love and support over the years. Thank you for everything! It's been an incredible 6 years and we owe it all to you.

xoxo

Sadly, Handsome Furs, the project of Wolf Parade's Dan Boeckner and his wife Alexie Perry, posted the above message to their website last night, announcing their end as a band, with no other elaboration. This announcement comes almost a year after Wolf Parade played their last show "for a long time."

In related news, you can catch Spencer Krug's Moonface project on tour this spring/summer. That tour includes the previously mentioned NYC show at Bowery Ballroom on June 30 with La Big Vic. Tickets are still available.

Heartbreaking Bravery

Last year, Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown vocalist Spencer Krug released his debut full length under his relatively new Moonface moniker, Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped. That album featured little more than Spencer's voice, organ, and a drum machine, a fairly drastic but welcome change from the guitar/piano songwriting he's become known for in his other projects. Now, he's set to release the followup to Organ Music, which he recorded with Finnish krautrockers Siinai. The album's titled Heartbreaking Bravery and its due out on April 17 via Jagjaguwar. The backing of a full band makes the album more similar to Spencer's other bands than his previous work as Moonface, but the songs do retain some of the looping qualities of Organ Music. Stream the full album below (via AV Club) along with the video for album single "Teary Eyes and Bloody Lips" (which you can also grab the MP3 of above).

Moonface will tour internationally in support of the album in the next few months, hitting NYC on June 20 at Bowery Ballroom. Tickets for the NYC show are on AmEx presale now and go on sale to the general public on Friday (4/13) at noon.

Tammar

Bloomington, IN psych-poppers Tammar released their new album, Visits on September 20 via Suicide Squeeze. The album's got hints of the kind of psych-rock channelled by The Standells, though some more modern influences come through too, especially on the beachy "Summer Fun." Check out the video for "The Last Line" below, and grab the MP3 of that song and "Yung Jun" above.

The band will play a record release show in their hometown of Bloomington, IN this Saturday (10/1) and have a short run of NYC shows coming up at the end of October. They play Cameo Gallery on October 28 with Heaven's Gate, Pianos on October 29 with Gross Relations and Little Racer, and they open for Moonface at Bowery Ballroom on October 30. Tickets are on sale now for the Pianos show and are still available for the Bowery Ballroom show with Moonface. Check Cameo's site for updates on that show.

Moonface

Moonface (aka Spencer Krug of Wolf Parade/Sunset Rubdown) played Mercury Lounge on Wednesday (7/20) as part of an ongoing tour. Spencer performed with with an organ and was accompanied by a drummer. They played every song on the recently released LP Organ Music Not Vibraphone Like I'd Hoped and the non-album track "The Way You Wish You Could Live in the Storm." They ended their set with "All Fires," one of Spencer's contributions to his project with Dan Bejar and Carey Mercer, Swan Lake.

Flowchild opened the NYC show which happened right after EMA in the same venue. Pictures, videos, and setlist are below...

MoonfaceMoonface

I actually came across this other band named Moonface (from Providence, Rhode Island) while looking for info for our last Moonface post. Moonface, the one we were writing about, is the new Spencer Krug project. At first I thought maybe Spencer (of Wolf Parade fame) had accidentaly used a band name that was already taken, but then I saw that this other Moonface appear to be even newer. They haven't even played one show yet, have been on Twitter less than two months and so for only have demos posted on their BandCamp. They need to change their name (and do a better job of Googling).

Spencer's Moonface released an EP in 2010 via Jagjaguwar (announced in 2009) and is now well known to Google and the indie rock world. To make matters worse (and the reason I'm writing this post in the first place), the Rhode Island band is confusing people and even getting booked by people who think that they're booking Spencer. Not only is Spencer NOT playing Glasslands on August 13th, neither is the Moonface from Rhode Island since Glasslands realized that was who they accidentally booked to headline the Saturday night show which is now cancelled.

Spencer is however touring and playing NYC in July.

Spencer with Wolf Parade at Sasquatch 2011 (more by Josh Darr)
Wolf Parade

Spencer Krug will take his Moonface project on a previously announced tour which kicks off in July and runs through early August. As mentioned, the tour hits NYC on July 20 at Mercury Lounge. Tickets are still available. If you miss him the first time around, Moonface will return to NYC on August 13 at Glasslands. No opener has been announced for either show yet. Tickets for the Glasslands show are also on sale now.. UPDATE: Moonface is NOT playing Glasslands, and never was.

Handsome Furs' new album Sound Kapital comes out June 28 via Sub Pop. It's streaming now on KCRW. Its first single "What About Us" was remixed by fellow Canadian Diamond Rings. Grab the MP3 above.

Handsome Furs at the Great Escape in May (more by Tim Griffin)
Handsome Furs

"It's like a friends and family affair tonight," declared Wolf Parade singer/guitarist Dan Boeckner at the beginning of what had been announced as the indie rock band's final show at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver Monday night...

...In a way, wrapping things up in Vancouver after a somewhat surprising appearance at the Sasquatch! Music Festival last weekend was fitting...

"It wasn't until Krug said, "This is our last show for (a) long time," after Cloud Shadow on the Mountain, that reality set in.

Wolf Parade revisited some glorious moments: Shine a Light, I'll Believe in Anything, Little Golden Age, and Kissing the Beehive, and fans couldn't have asked for more.

They did get two encores, including tumultuous renditions of This Heart's on Fire and You Are a Runner and I Am My Father's Son, and culminating with that final Dylan cover.

Boeckner will now focus on project Handsome Furs with his wife, Alexei Perry, and Krug will move on to Moonface.
[Montreal Gazette]

Last show for a long time doesn't mean breaking up. As Spencer pointed out in a recent interview, the band just doesn't have any plans to record or tour at the moment, though he says: "This could be the last show. We're not so naive to think it couldn't be. We're also not so naive to be so black-and-white as to say it definitely is our last show, you know?" The full Wolf Parade setlist from their Monday night maybe-but-probably-not-last show is listed below with a video of their last song, "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."

And meanwhile, Moonface will have a new album out and is touring soon.

And we recently mentioned a number of Handsome Furs dates this summer including NXNE, but the band just added a bunch more leading up to their September appearance at MusicfestNW. The new dates include an NYC show at Webster Hall on August 18. Tickets go on sale Friday (6/3) at noon. All dates are listed below.

While you wait for Handsome Furs' new album, Sound Kapital to come out (June 28 via Sub Pop), check out their iTunes Live from Montreal EP which is available now. The EP includes two cuts off the new album, "No Feelings" and "Repatriated" (which you can also grab here), and three off 2009's Face Control. Check out the tracklist and more Handsome Furs dates and the other stuff, below.
