Tompkins Square Dog Hallowen Costume Parade

Halloween is here again, and that means NYC's best parade. Grand Marshall Whoopi Goldberg will lead "hundreds of PUPPETS, 53 BANDS of Different Types of Music, DANCERS and ARTISTS, and thousands of other New Yorkers in costumes of their own creation in the nation's most wildly creative public participatory event in the greatest city in the world!" The theme this year is "The Garden of Earthly Delights!":

Although one often associates Halloween with things Infernal, this year's Halloween Parade is headed to Paradise, or more specifically the Garden of Earthly Delights. Join us as we unearth the layers of Heironymous Bosch's timeless altarpiece, exploring the precarious borderland Garden between the primeval terrors of wilderness and the modern confines of civility. Is there an oasis, a point of respite between the ravaging wilds of nature and stifling constrictions of urban life? A garden is above all, a place of precarious balance - just enough nature to tie us to our primeval roots, yet not so much we might lose our way and fall prey to the dangers that lurk in the wilderness. It is a narrow borderland of green where one might be of nature without being fully in it. The great gardens of Europe often featured mazes of hedgerows, where visitors could experience the vicarious terror of becoming lost (literally "bewildered") while taking comfort from the confines of civilization that encircled them.

The beginning of humankind's transition to sedentary farming coincides with a mythological obsession with the Garden, as the dangerous uncertainty of our hunter-gatherer past gave way to ordered paths, sheltering walls, and sustaining bounties. The Tree of Life and the fruits of immortality are never found in the forest, jungle, or savannah, but rather in a cultivated Garden - whether Golden Apples tended by the Hesperides of the Greeks, or the Jade Emperor's Peaches of Immortality pilfered by Monkey King of Chinese Myth, or the Biblical Garden of Eden whose fruits bring knowledge even as they harken the end of innocence. Like Borges' Garden of the Forking Paths, it is a place of infinite possibilities and permutations contained within a finite and intimate space. Gardens are also places of forbidden delights and forgotten joys hidden away behind ivied walls and locked gates. The Secret Gardens of Hans Christian Andersen and Frances Hodgson Burnett remind us that the Garden evokes a return to childhood's fearless and ephemeral embrace of the world.

The New York Village Halloween Parade has always been a secret garden of sorts, a place where, for 40 years, wildness of a very rare variety has flourished within the high walls of New York's avenues. Halloween being a night of inversions, our "garden" is not a safe place where the "wild" is kept out; it is a safe place where the wildness of imagination is invited in! Just as Frederick Law Olmsted's ramble in Central Park cultivates the liberating thrill of bewilderment amidst its twisting paths, paraders know they will be safe within the procession.

This year Parade puppeteers will sow the seeds of a verdant Garden, turning 6th Avenue into a greenway of surging shoots, unfurling blossoms, and tempting fruits dangling low from the animated boughs of a giant Tree of Life. All are invited to our workshops to help bring our not-so-secret, world-famous "garden" to life and celebrate our oasis of wildness that in the end (as Olmsted said) is what truly civilizes us.

MEANWHILE, the dog Halloween parade happened in Tompkins Square Park on Saturday, and BrooklynVegan photographer Mimi Hong stopped by before she got to our CMJ showcase. Her constumed dog pictures continue below...

Gae Pride

In a desperate move to save their remaining beer sponsorships, the New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade organizers have decided to let one gay group march in the parade in 2015. Mayor Bill de Blasio, Guinness, and Sam Adams all boycotted the parade this year, which clearly scared the organizers into what they say is only "political correctness."

The Associated Press reports that OUT@NBCUniversal, NBC's LGBT worker support group, will march with an identifying banner in the parade. It's not clear if they were specifically invited or applied to march. (NBC broadcasts the parade.) No other gay groups are expected to march this year. [Gawker]

2012 Thanksgiving Day Parade

Though we don't have any shots of Staten Island's PS 22 Chorus (my personal highlight of the parade), or of the float with Jimmy Fallon and the Roots (Questlove's Instagrams HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE), the Smurfs, Spongebob, hip hop pop star Flo Rida, country music's Trace Adkins, Don McLean (bye bye Miss American Pie), Oda Mae aka Whoopi Goldberg, Santa Claus and more are prominently featured in our set of 2012 NYC Thankgiving Day Parade photos. Check out the rest below...

Happy NYC Pride 2012. Already underway, the week of celebrations will come to a close Sunday night (6/24), with the annual Dance on the Pier which will feature a performance by Cyndi Lauper who is also one of the grand marshalls of The March which happens earlier that day. Chris Salgardo, Phyllis Siegel & Connie Kopelov are the other marshsalls. Tonight (6/20) is Family Night (which includes a screening of the original Willy Wonka movie), and there's also a "VIP Roof Party" and "Rapture on the River" on Saturday, not to mention plenty of unofficial celebrations all over the city. mermaid parade

"The tradition of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade began in 1983, when the first event of this kind was conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun, who is sometimes dubbed the "Mayor of Coney Island", and who was the founder of the non-profit arts group Coney Island USA.

The parade pays homage to the Coney Island Mardi Gras parades of the early 20th century. During this era, Coney Island was the primary amusement park destination for those in the New York area. Like the much larger annual Village Halloween Parade, the mermaid parade embodies the spirit and artistry of Mardi Gras." [Wiki]

Despite the rain, this year's Mermaid Parade went down as planned in Coney Island (Brooklyn, NY) this afternoon (6/21). Harvey Keitel, with his wife (the queen) by his side, was the the king (Neptune) of the parade. More pictures (NSFW), below...

I have to finish what I started, and I guess that would be compiling the world's biggest collection of people dressed as Amy Winehouse for Halloween. I was already up to 92 pictures. By the end of this post you'll have seen another 166. Some are great, and more than a few paired Amy with her boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil. This photo falls into both of those categories....

Amy Winehouse

Even more looked less like Amy, and then there were many Amys that decided to hang out with Pete Doherty instead of Blake - a pairing that makes a lot of sense from the English musician drug addict tabloid point of view. This picture falls into both of those categories....

Amy Winehouse

In related news,

After Amy Wino's hideous performance at the MTV Europe Awards last night, she was booed when she accepted an award for Artists' Choice. Pete Doherty immediately came to her defense.

He was asked what advice he would give Wino, "I wouldn't give her any. She's fine. It's all bollocks. People should leave her alone. I went for a drink with her earlier today and she's totally fine. Perfectly healthy and happy.
"People are saying she's out of control, but she's not. She's a sensible girl and she knows what she's doing. She ain't doing nothing wrong." [dlisted]
Then there was Amy with Lily Allen...

Amy Winehouse

and even Amy with M.I.A....

Amy Winehouse

Now we'll get to more Amy's in a second, but first: To answer my own question, "no", Amy is no longer playing the MTVu Woody Awards or Saturday Night Live due to visa issues. Oh well - not a big loss considering how scary her last live appearance was. That video, and a zillion more Amy impersonators, below.....

"Oklahoma Gazette invited resident Okie eccentrics the Flaming Lips to participate in its annual "Ghouls Gone Wild" Halloween parade, the Lips enlisted their biggest fans to join the March Of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons--a "spectacle celebrating the mysterious, the supernatural, and the otherworldly," according to the band's recruitment email."
