Peter Murphy will release his 10th album, Lion, this summer. Produced by Killing Joke bassist Youth, the album doesn't have a North American release date yet but will be out in the UK on June 2. You can stream song samples over at Amazon.co.uk. Opening cut "Hang Up" will be released -- in dub form -- as a Record Store Day 7" with non-LP song "I'm on Your Side" on the flip.

While a full tour hasn't been announced yet, tour dates have started to pop up, including NYC at Irving Plaza on June 9. Tickets for that show are on sale now and all known dates are listed below.

David J & The Gentlemen

In related news, Murphy's old Bauhaus bandmate David J has added a second NYC show on his tour. In addition the full-band show Pianos on April 19, he'll do an acoustic show at Grand Victory on April 17 with Azar Swan opening. Tickets for the Grand Victory and Pianos shows are on sale now. In addition to songs from his new solo album (and previous ones), he's also been peppering his sets with Love & Rockets songs such as "No New Tale to Tell" and "The Dog-End of a Day Gone By" as well.

Azar Swan, meanwhile, recently released a cover of Marianne Faithful's "Broken English" and you can stream that below.

And finally, Daniel Ash of Bauhaus/L&R/Tones on Tails (and one of post-punk's more underrated guitarists) currently has a Plegemusic campaign to fund an album titled Stripped, that will featuring acoustic versions of some of Ash's best-known songs from his previous bands.

All Peter Murphy and David J dates are listed, along the the 'Lion' tracklist and Azar Swan stream, below...

Peter Murphy @ Webster Hall, 5/7/2013
Peter Murphy

Last night (5/7), Peter Murphy returned to New York, playing a nearly two-hour set of his Bauhaus material to a sold out Webster Hall. It was part of his Mr Moonlight tour, Celebrating 35 Years of Bauhaus, which takes him throughout the US, Mexico, Canada and Europe. (He was in Austin a couple weeks ago.) However as girls sat on each other's shoulders taking photos of each other with Bauhaus signs, Murphy was quick to remind everyone that "We're not Bauhaus, we're us!" Otherwise his set was notably free of the usual between-song banter, which I wondered about until he dedicated an emotional "Who Killed Mr Moonlight" to his mother-in-law saying she'd passed away eight hours earlier.

The two support bands were Loudboy from NYC, apparently a nickname given to frontman John Andrews by Helmet's Page Hamilton, followed by Ours, a six piece who have supported Peter Murphy in the past and describe themselves as "an American based musical group led by singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Gnecco." Ours are also in the midst of an extensive headlining tour throughout the US.

More pictures from Webster Hall are below.

mugshot...
Peter Murphy

Peter Murphy, of Bauhaus/solo artist fame, was arrested this weekend after allegedly hitting another car in his Subaru (brutal) and attempting to flee the scene. He was cornered by an eyewitness until the police arrived:

The eyewitness followed Murphy, 55, from the crash at Central and Goode avenues in Glendale to the 3400 block of Barham Boulevard in Los Angeles because "he was afraid [Murphy] would kill someone with his driving," according to Glendale police.

Murphy, who was in a Subaru Forester, reportedly struck a Mercedes about 11:48 a.m. at the intersection, then drove around it and entered the 134 Freeway, police said. As he fled the scene, a witness who was washing windows snapped a photograph of Murphy's vehicle, which had sustained moderate front-end damage...

Glendale officers said Murphy appeared to be at points "very confused" and had difficulty recalling the day and time.

Murphy denied drinking alcohol that day, adding that he had only taken his regular prescription pills for depression, according to police... Inside the L.A. police patrol car where Murphy had been detained, officers reported finding a small plastic bag, possibly of methamphetamine, police said. Murphy denied that the bag belonged to him, but officers said they believed he was trying to discard it in the patrol car. -[LA Times]

No word as to whether or not the arrest will change anything with his upcoming all-Bauhaus tour scheduled for this spring.

Peter Murphy @ The Well, Sept. 2012 (more by Harriet Roberts)

Peter Murphy will be celebrating Bauhaus' 35th Anniversary with a tour this year where he'll perform a set solely comprised of his old band's material. Too bad he couldn't coax his bandmates Daniel Ash, David J and Kevin Haskins (aka Love & Rockets) to reunite as they did for Bauhaus' 20th anniversary in 1998 (anyone go to either/both of the Hammerstein Ballroom shows?). For some, though, Murphy digging deep into Bauhaus's catalog will be good enough. The tour will hit NYC on May 7 at Webster Hall. Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale on Wednesday (3/6) at noon with the regular on-sale happening on Friday at noon.

All tour dates are listed, plus their entire 1998 "Gotham" concert video, below...

Peter Murphy at The Well, 8/26/2012
Peter Murphy

Goth icon Peter Murphy played Bushwick outdoor venue The Well a couple weeks ago (8/26) and we've got a belated set of pics for you to check out. His set mixed cuts from 2011's Ninth with many of his late '80s alt-rock hits ("Cuts You Up," "All Night Long") as well as a few Bauhaus songs and Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" which Bauhaus covered as a single in 1982.

Setlist from The Well, along with more photos from the show are below...

Peter Murphy @ Irving Plaza
Peter Murphy

I came to Murphy's concert at Irving Plaza this week with, I think, the right amount the reverence. Murphy's baritone is iconic. He's got half a dozen great singles, including "Cuts You Up," "You're So Close" and "Final Solution," spread among the eight or nine records in his post-Bauhaus career.

If you overlook the indulgent and pretentious Turkish-flavored records Murphy has put out, there are enough great songs to sustain a couple hours of entertainment.

The voice is still there and Murphy is trim and expressive in his mid-50s, acting out the songs with his hands and fingers like he's in a silent movie. But the impression he left me with, a balding old man playing old songs to aging acolytes, was that the whole thing was kind of farcical... The music we grew up with is gone. It's part of who we are now, but it can't be recaptured or recreated. A simulacrum of something that was once awesome and genuine and that hit hard is just that, a simulacrum. The songs may sound the same, they may evoke feelings or memories that, for a few bars, evoke a place and a time..., but they're not the real thing. Each return to a Peter Murphy song, or a Depeche Mode song, actually separates us a little big further from the original.
-[Upper Middle Brow]

Peter Murphy played to a mostly packed Irving Plaza on 11/21, supported by She Wants Revenge from San Fernando Valley, California and Hussle Club from New York. The show was part of Murphy's huge, ongoing tour with She Wants Revenge through Europe and North America to support his latest release Ninth.

For many Murphy is best known for his work as part of the influential group Bauhaus, who arrived late 1978 influenced by the punk rock movement and went on to unintentionally spawn a genre (Goth). They survived for four hot years before disbanding, at which point Murphy went on to start a successful solo career and to collaborate with artists such as Japan's Mick Karn in the group Dalis Car. In 1998 the members of Bauhaus reunited and the band returned for the full-scale 'Resurrection' world tour, before disappearing forever. Murphy returned to his solo career, writing and touring ever since.

Murphy can occasionally be seen on the big screen as well. Though he does not appear in the currently-very-popular Breaking Dawn, he did have a part in 2010's Twilight Eclipse.

More pictures from Irving Plaza and all remaining tour dates are below.

Peter Murphy's newest and appropriately titled solo effort Ninth (his ninth solo LP) is out now via Nettwerk Music Group. The LP, featuring the recently revealed videos for "Seesaw Sway" and "I Spit Roses" (both viewable below), is a primer for the goth great/ex-Bauhaus's US/EU tour, which kicks off in October and concludes in middle December. The US leg of said tour features She Wants Revenge and hits NYC at Irving Plaza on November 21st. Tickets are on sale. All dates are below.l

Mick Karn

Mick Karn (born Andonis Michaelides, 24 July 1958 - 4 January 2011) was an English multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter, who came to fame as the bassist for the art rock band Japan, from 1974 to 1982.

The band Japan, whose other members included David Sylvian, keyboardist Richard Barbieri and Sylvian's brother Steve Jansen as drummer, began as a group of friends, who all studied at the same school... They christened themselves Japan in 1974, signed a recording contract with German disco label Hansa, and became an alternative glam rock outfit in the mould of David Bowie, T.Rex, and The New York Dolls.

As the band started to achieve commercial success with the release of their Tin Drum album, and "Ghosts", which reached the top 5 in 1982, tensions and personality conflicts between band members rose, Tin Drum was to be the band's final studio album.

After Japan broke up, he recorded a solo album before forming Dalis Car with Peter Murphy of the gothic post-punk group Bauhaus, who recorded one album in 1984. In the 1990s he worked with artist David Torn and a number of Japanese musicians, and formed the multinational New Wave band, NiNa. Since then he has worked as a solo artist and as a sculptor, photographer.

Karn has also played on recordings by other artists, contributing bass guitar and saxophone to Gary Numan's Dance album, and playing with Kate Bush and Joan Armatrading.

Karn recently announced on his website that he had been "diagnosed with advanced stages of cancer" and had set up a Paypal link for help from his fans. Karn "passed away peacefully at 4.30pm, 4th January 2011 at home in Chelsea, London. He was surrounded by his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all."

As Peter Murphy announced on his Facebook page in August and later confirmed by Mick Karn, Dalis Car had reunited and new material was being written for a forthcoming LP. No word on the status of that LP, but Peter Murphy did confirm that they worked together on new material and offered his condolences on his Facebook page:

It's with great sadness and affection and that I hear the news of Mick Karn's passing today. My Love goes out to Kyoko his wife, his son Metis and Mick's unfailing assistant and close friend Debi Zornes who I had the pleasure to meet during the brief spell that Mick and I got to work together this past autumn. Mick's wry sense of humo...ur, keen creativity and graciousness were there even in the times of most physical distress. May he rest in the lap of Compassion.

Till we meet again.

Mick Karn, R.I.P.

Peter Murphy

There was one absolutely insane (not in the fun way, but in the clinical way) woman who was clearly drunk and stumbled up behind us and kept calling up to the stage demanding attention.

Crazy-Lady: Peter! It's Leslie [turning back towards us] I know him, he remembers me.

Crazy-Lady: Peter! You have to help me, Peter! They're going to kill me!

I am not making this shit up!
She started making weird shapes with her hands like she was casting spells, and kept holding out her hand to Peter and the guitarist, cupped as if she was demanding an offering from them.

When Peter shook hands with everyone standing near the stage, Crazy Leslie tried to get his attention again:
Crazy-Lady: Peter, it's Leslie! You remember me, Peter!
Peter Murphy: I'm sorry, I'm sure I don't remember you. [Nymphean]

Since there was no Nine Inch Nails show last night (they start back up again in Chicago tonight) and I didn't want to go a day without a Peter Murphy post, I was glad to remember that we had this unused set of pictures in the reserve from one of Peter's July shows at Highline Ballroom in NYC (they may or may not be from the show Leslie was at) (actually, Leslie was probably at both). Nine Inch Nails

"And so ... my NYC NINventure has come to a close. Last night, Nine Inch Nails played their second show at Terminal 5, which was their last in NYC for the foreseeable future. It's hard to believe that all 4 NYC shows are over already but the band are already on their way to Chicago, IL for the 2 shows there before they make their way to Canada for their final festival performance there. Last night's Terminal 5 show clocked in at about 2 hours and 45 minutes and provided a raucously fun send off for the NYC fans.

Peter Murphy was, once again, a special guest performer for last night's show but he managed to out do his surprise appearance at Tuesday night's show." [Pink is the New Blog]

Peter Murphy makes a grand appearance @ Terminal 5 - 8/26/09 (by trentvanegas)
Peter Murphy

"Whether rising from coffins on-stage, driving a hearse called the "Bauhearse," or appearing in concert as vampires, Bauhaus was one of the establishing acts of the goth movement. Their use of spacey recording effects and theatrical aesthetics was evocative of both early horror films and glam rock; they became an influential group in the early days of gothic rock.

In 1982, Bauhaus appeared during the opening sequences of the horror movie The Hunger, performing one of their most popular songs, "Bela Lugosi's Dead". The camera focused almost exclusively on Murphy during most of the scene, panning only briefly to the stars David Bowie and Catherine Deneuve." [Wikipedia]

Nine Inch Nails have completed their four-night run in NYC. Tonight (8/26) was the 2nd show at Terminal 5 and it ended with another guest appearance by Peter Murphy who descended from the ceiling on a chain... upside down like a bat (see above and below).

Peter helped Trent and band perform "Reptile", "Strange Kind Of Love", Bauhaus's "Bela Lugosi's Dead", and Pere Ubu' "Final Solution". Full setlist and video below...

Trent Reznor & Peter Murphy @ Terminal 5 in NYC - 8/25/09 (via nin.com)
Nine Inch Nails

As Kanye West and Amber Rose watched from the balcony (sorry for the gossip) at Terminal 5 last night (8/25), Nine Inch Nails played 29 songs at their 3rd of 4 NYC shows this week. The major highlight of the evening (for me at least) was that Peter Murphy of Bauhaus joined them for 3 of those songs, one of which was a Bauhaus cover ("Kick in the Eye). It wasn't the first time it's happened, but it was very sweet.

Earlier in the set, NIN played "I'm Afraid of Americans", before which Trent said something about getting to work with an idol on a song a few years ago, but unfortunately, despite that tease, David Bowie was nowhere to be found in the building. Now that I think of it, they totally should have had Peter sing Bowie's part on that one.

Trent introduced Peter Murphy by saying that back in 1990, when they were young and just coming up, someone helped them out and took them on the road. Then came Peter to the stage to help them perform "Reptile" which was followed by "Kick in the Eye". Peter returned in the encore to help NIN do their cover of Joy Division's "Dead Souls". His stage presence is awesome.

I thought the whole show was great, but it was the final ten songs that really made it feel like there was energy in the large, cavernous room. Basically: Peter--> Peter--> Hands That Feeds--->Head Like a Hole---> all encore songs w/ 1 Peter again---> final-emotional-Hurt. What did you think?

Night one (Bowery Ballroom) got "smallest venue ever". Night two (Webster Hall) got The Downard Spiral from start to finish. Night three got Peter Murphy. Night four happens tonight (Wednesday, August 26th), again at Terminal 5. All 10 "Wave Goodbye" dates (Trent at one point said something like "I'll miss you guys") (which bothers me a little because I don't actually believe this is the end) HERE. Stay tuned for more. Full setlist below.

"Secret Cover Tour '09: To coincide with the staggered release of 4 single covers, the Secret Cover Tour will include a preview of new material from Peter's forthcoming album (to be announced in the near future). More touring is planned to follow U.S. & Europe." - [Peter Murphy]

"He only played a few songs from his solo back catalog, so if you are expecting another greatest hits tour, this isn't it. But I have heard those songs before many times so for me it is much more exciting to hear new songs. Especially when they sound this good!" - [strangelets in San Francisco]

"Tonights show was great! all except the venur security who did not want us to tak esetlists home as mementos. Sorry if you guys planned to reuse them. We always print nw ones out. Never in my life have I had my arm pulled behind my back to the point of snapping and ushered out without putting up a fight and then thrown out. Peter Murphy @ Gramercy Theatre June 26, 2008 (more by Lori Baily)
Peter Murphy

Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy made a rare appearance at Austin's South By Southwest festival today (March 19, 2009), coming all the way from his adopted home in Turkey to perform for a packed house at Elysium.

Backed by a four-piece band, the goth legend performed several songs from his extensive solo catalogue and pranced around the stage dramatically throughout the 45-minute set.

In between songs, Murphy bantered with the crowd and delivered a message to any musicians in the room. "This is about music, not radio friendliness," he said. "The artist has more power than anybody. The artists must know that they are the centre of it."

At one point, Murphy even handed his microphone to audience members who proceeded to ask him questions. When a woman asked how it felt to reunite with Bauhaus recently, Murphy said, "Bauhaus are very nice chaps but they are exhausting!"

Later in the evening, a man in the crowd shouted, "We fucking love you, Peter!"

"I'm sure you just want to enter my body," quipped Murphy in response, "which is not love." [NME]

Murphy is coming back to the US for solo shows this summer. That tour includes a two-show NYC run at the Highline Ballroom in July. Tickets for the Monday, July 6th and Tuesday, July 7th shows are on sale.

If Murphy's gigs this summer are anything like his SXSW set, the music will be mainly focused on material from his upcoming album. Speculation about that album...

[Peter Murphy's forthcoming] album may feature production from Trent Reznor of NIN and feature Peter's version of the track "Warm Leatherette," which they have been performing live together... [Wikipedia]
Murphy sang with Reznor on the NIN song "Reptile" in Atlantic City last year. The pair are no strangers to collaboration. In 2006, while on the road together with their respective bands, Reznor and Murphy recorded live, in-studio versions of a number of tracks, including "Warm Leatherette" and "Reptile." Videos of those, videos from Peter Murphy's SXSW set, the Chase Bank commercial featuring Myrphy's voice and all known tour dates, below...

"The surprise of the night was when Peter Murphy from Bauhaus added some extra spookiness to "Reptile". It reminded me of how disappointed I am that Bauhaus broke up again. The lighthearted moment of the evening was when Trent Reznor (Vocals/Guitars) lamented how he had apparently messed up the lyrics in the breakdown of "Closer". Luckily, a fan helped Trent out by repeating the correct lyrics when he was tossed the microphone. Trent would later incorporate the lyrics into "Discipline" to the delight of the audience." Peter Murphy

Murphy's current Retrospective tour culls from both his solo work and Bauhaus's songs, particularly those on its spring-released "Go Away White," a surprisingly fine recording after the quartet's 15-year recording hiatus. But, with Bauhaus, arguably the band who invented the Goth rock movement in 1979, once again disbanded, and this time with a sense of finality, Murphy is airing the new songs with a three-piece backing band, which includes drummer-for-hire Nick Lucero (Queens of the Stone Age). "They might've played with other people, but they're mine now," said Murphy with vampirish relish. A new solo album was completed, he also assured. [Boston.com]
Lori went to see Peter Murphy, but left a big fan of opener Ali Eskandrian (June 26, 2008). The rest of the tour dates, and more pictures from the Blender/Gramercy Theater show, below....
