Dropdead at Acheron last night (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Dropdead

Providence powerviolence greats Dropdead hit Acheron in Brooklyn last night (April 14), a show on their return trek from Damaged City Fest. The night featured an eclectic lineup that ranged from punk by No Sir I, Won't, Brooklyn early-Earache-worshippers Trenchgrinder (members Skullshitter/Anicon/Gang Signs), noise/crossover punks Shoxx, police-themed powerviolence crew NARC (members of Dawn of Humans, Rosenkopf) to sludgy punk from Occult 45. Pictures from the Dropdead appearance are available at InvisibleOranges.

Legendary California hardcore band and powerviolence forefathers Infest have announced a new release. The band, who will play upcoming dates at Maryland Deathfest and Chaos in Tejas, will release the Days Turn Black 7", featuring "the leftovers of the leftovers with 3 unreleased tracks" and a Negative Approach cover culled from the No Man's Slave era (95/96). No word as to the size of the run, but you best get in line at the merch table now to secure yours.

Iron Lung at DbA, 3/30/2013
Iron Lung

Seattle powerviolence duo Iron Lung have been out on the road for close to a month now, playing dates with Dream Decay including Saturday at Death by Audio (3/30) in Brooklyn, NY. Support at the show came from the trio of Brain Slug, the always amazing Shoxx (now with a pair of guitarists) and the crusty No Tomorrow. The show was one of the first NYC dates for Shoxx since drummer Elsner Nino departed to join Merchandise.

One of the biggest disappointments of the evening was amplifier hum on Jon Kortland's guitar, not so much that it hindered the Iron Lung's performance, but that the first half wasn't peppered with drummer Jensen Ward's dry & sarcastic jokes in between songs. That changed as the evening rolled on, and the band's start-stops and thundering blasts surpassed the razor-sharp onstage wit.

Dream Decay was the most surprising act of the evening, channelling noise rock and Swans-y no-wave into a single slithering, feedback drenched pummel. Drummer/vocals are at the center of this Seattle band's sound, which also featured a saxophone to add Contortion-y squeals over top of it all. Fans of Pissed Jeans and Swans, take note.

Iron Lung are touring in support of White Glove Test, the band's new LP that comes in three versions: the regular LP, a companion noise LP and a combination of the two. Dream Decay also has a new LP, N V N V N V, out now via Iron Lung Records. Stream both below and get hard copies on the road, or snag a digital of both LPs at the Iron Lung bandcamp.

More pics from Saturday's show at DbA are below.

Infest at The Echo, Los Angeles 1/13/2013 (via @robcoons)
Infest

It goes without saying that the legendary Infest made their distinct imprint on hardcore and grind. The LA Powerviolence pioneers played their first show in 16 years last night (1/13) at The Echo in Los Angeles with bassist Chris Dodge (Crossed Out, Despise You, Spazz, etc) in tow. Check out video from their performance below.

Infest already have dates lined-up for Maryland Deathfest and Chaos in Tejas in 2013, but the band have also added a date with Insult, Magrudergrind, Shitstorm and Strong Intention in Miami on March 9. Full tour dates are listed below, along with video from last night's show.

Jensen with Walls at Acheron, August 2012 (more by Fred Pessaro // BBG)
Walls

Iron Lung will team with Dreamdecay, Brain Slug and Shoxx as part a rager set for March 30 at Death by Audio. $8 gets you in.

So far additional dates have not been announced, though Jensen of Iron Lung is confirmed to serve as a member of Society Nurse (with members of his other project Walls and others), when the band plays with Vile Gash, Slices and more at Acheron on January 19. Tickets are on sale, or you can buy them with a limited bundle with Catharsis ticket for later that night.

In other news, Shoxx, who you might have seen at 285 Kent over the weekend, play Acheron on January 5 with No Power Swaath and In School. The band's drummer Elsner Nino played with Merchandise on both nights of their 285 Kent shows (New Year's Eve included) as their newly-appointed member.

Head below for new Iron Lung streams, as well as a Society Nurse video.

Cynarae

I once heard that brutal Seattle four-piece Cynarae sound like a combination of the great Morser and His Hero is Gone, which to me seems pretty on point. The band recently dropped their LP via A389 and digitally pour gratis (stream/DL it below, it rules) and are taking that material on the road, tagging the East Coast with pockets of vitriol until mid-October. NYC is not immune from their blasting hardcore venom, as we'll see Cynarae take to the stage of Acheron on October 9 with Scowl and more TBA.

Full tour dates are listed below, as well as streams of the Cynarae and Scowl material.

Ancestors @ Room 710 in Austin - March 19, 2009

My SXSW adventure began Wednesday morning at the airport. Talk about starting things off on the wrong foot! A woman fell into a diabetic coma (she was ok later that morning) on my 6:30AM flight. That led to an unplanned stop in NOLA which was followed by a layover in a fogged up Houston Airport... to say I was a little late to our own day show at Emo's was an understatement. Unfortunately, Trash Talk were wheeling their amps out the door when I got there (which meant I also missed Garotas Suecas and Psychedelic Horseshit), but I managed to catch Trash Talk vocalist Lee cruising around, with a microphone grill imprinted on his forehead. His pain, our pleasure...
