On January 22, former Pantera frontman and always prolific metal musician Phil Anselmo stirred up considerable controversy as he hosted the annual Dimebash show. Dimebash is an all-star concert that pays tribute to the late Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell, and this year it featured the likes of Dave Grohl, Robert Trujillo, Dave Lombardo, Gary Holt, and various others. Unfortunately this year's event was less joyous than usual, as Phil Anselmo, probably drunkenly, decided that it was a good idea to close the show by coming out on stage, giving a nazi salute, and yelling "white power."
After that video surfaced, Phil offered the following justification:
This predictably caused a lot of backlash, though not as much as it might have if it had been, say, Lars Ulrich, as Robb Flynn of Machine Head (who was at Dimebash) pointed out in a condemnation of Phil's remarks.
Despite his initial "no apologies from me," Phil eventually -- perhaps spurred by the remarks of Flynn and others -- apologized:
Even in the wake of the apology, things have continued to sour for Anselmo. His sludge band DOWN just had their appearance at FortaRock fest in the Netherlands cancelled by the festival organizers. The organizers say:
There has been close consultation between all parties recent days, since we wanted to make a well informed decision. On that basis, the decision is made to cancel the act. We want to make clear that there is no room for racism or fascism on FortaRock.Anthrax's Scott Ian also came out hard against Anselmo in the wake of the apology, and suggested he donates to Holocaust education organization Simon Weisenthal Center. He posted the following message to instagram:
Phil Anselmo is an extremely influential person in the metal community, with his tentacles in a lot of different projects, like his label Housecore Records, his festival, and his many bands with many different important figures of the metal world at large. Hopefully that doesn't stop the industry to continue to hold him accountable.

Ever find your life lacking substantial entertainment? Well, if so, it's a good thing our pals at Fox News exist to flip that occasional boredom on its head. They've long been so very adept at analyzing the social correlates of hip hop, and their recent The Five panel reportage re: Kendrick Lamar doesn't disappoint (read: greatly disappoints).
As you may have seen, Kendrick opened the BET Awards this year with a raw, honest performance of "Alright" atop a vandalized police car, rapping "We hate po-po / Wanna kill us dead in the street fo sho" with a huge American flag snapping behind him. Of course, Fox had something to say (and to keep your head shaking, they only subtitled certain lyrics to change the song meaning).
"Ugh, I don't like it... Personally, it doesn't excite me, it doesn't turn me on, it doesn't interest me, I'm not feelin' it" was the genius insight we got from Kimberly Guilfoyle. And then, from Geraldo Rivera:
It's not helpful at all. This is why I say hip-hop has done more damage to African-Americans than racism in recent years. This is exactly the wrong message. And then to conflate what happened in the church in Charleston, South Carolina with these tragic incidents involving excessive use of force by cops is to equate that racist killer with these cops - it is so wrong, it is so counterproductive, it gives exactly the wrong the message.Obviously.
Kendrick appeared on TMZ Live today with an elegant response to Rivera's comments (via HipHopDX):
This is our music. This is us expressing ourselves. Rather [than] going out here and doing the murders myself, I want to express myself in a positive light the same way other artists are doing. Not going out in the streets, go in the booth and talking about the situation and hoping these kids can find some type of influence on it in a positive manner. Coming from these streets and coming from these neighborhoods, we're taking our talents and putting 'em inside the studio.He also added that Rivera took the "we hate po-po" line out of context and said, "you can't dilute the message." In other Kendrick news, the video for his Bilal collab, "Money Over Love" recently premiered. It's one of the singles off Bilal's fifth studio album, In Another Life, which Bilal has been on tour supporting. He hit NYC last night (7/1), with a show at Highline Ballroom (pictured above). One of 2015's fastest rising indie bands, Viet Cong, has been the subject of many articles lately, not because of their music, but because of their controversial name. Though maybe not immediately obvious to most young Americans, "Viet Cong" is a loaded term. Sang Nguyen at Impose wrote:
This history of violence is what I am reminded of every time I see Viet Cong's band name pop up on my news feed, in the music media, and on festival line-ups. Comprised of two ex-members of the band Women (also a pretty contentious name considering none of the members were actually women), Viet Cong have released records on labels like Jagjaguwar, Mexican Summer, and Flemish Eye, while garnering critical acclaim from Stereogum, NPR and even Impose. Pitchfork, who in recent months have done a thorough job calling attention to instances of misogyny, racism, and cultural appropriation in popular music, gave the band's recent album "Best New Music" status and have them booked at both SXSW and their annual summer festival. [Impose]The controversy has been known to the Canadian band for as long as they've been putting themselves out there. They've talked about it in interviews. Comments show up in forums and on social media, even by the band themselves (see above), but it all just really bubbled to the surface last week when Oberlin College cancelled a show. A statement from the college reads:
I am writing to officially announce the cancellation of the Viet Cong show at Oberlin College's Dionysus Discotheque (commonly known as The 'Sco) meant to take place on Saturday March 14th, 2015. This statement aims to express the reasoning behind such a move. As the person behind booking this band, I would first and foremost like to apologize on both my and my booking organization's behalf for inviting a band with a name that deeply offends and hurts Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American communities, both in Oberlin and beyond. I acknowledge the problematic nature of a band naming themselves "Viet Cong" and extend my apology to anyone hurt or made uncomfortable by the name and its connotations.You can read the rest of that HERE.
Viet Cong is of course not the first band whose name has caused this kind of reaction. There are many examples including Joy Division (named after Nazi concentration camp brothels described in the novel House of Dolls) and New Order (perceived Nazi connotations). A more recent example is Muslims who changed their name to The Soft Pack. Another band who can definitely relate is Gang of Four, who also happen to be an active band right now too. In fact, the current lineup is on tour now and they play Irving Plaza in NYC TONIGHT (Saturday, 3/7 --- tickets still available).
We caught up with Gang of Four original and current member Andy Gill and asked him what he thought about the Viet Cong situation. Here's what he told us:

it's a little ridiculous to ban bands for their name. We can all think of dozens of bands with really quite offensive names and as soon as you get into being the guardian of public morality, taking it upon yourself to decide whats ok and what is not, you are acting in an illiberal, undemocratic and anti-progressive way. People should be treated as grown ups, capable of making their own decisions . We should not be deciding for people what we think they are capable of understanding or not. Artists; film-makers, writers, musicians need to be un-censored so they can make their point, political or otherwise. - Andy

Also on the song is Danny Brown, Big Sean, Royce da 5'9" and Trick Trick. You can listen to that below too.
That's the same compilation where Eminem threatened to rape Iggy Azalea in a song: "So what's it gon' be? Put that shit away Iggy. You don't wanna blow that rape whistle on me. Scream! I love it. 'Fore I get lost with the gettin' off." That song came out not long after Em said he'd punch Lana Del Rey in the face in a freestyle. Keepin' it classy, Marshall.
Speaking of Iggy, Azealia Banks took to Twitter once again to fire a slew of angry tweets at her. This time it was to say she doesn't care about black people. She wrote, "its funny to see people Like Igloo Australia silent when these things happen... Black Culture is cool, but black issues sure aren't huh?" and "Don't just be down to ride Black Dick..... If you with us you WITH US!!!!" She also tweeted a "Christmas Carol" which was deleted but Buzzfeed still has up: "I'mmmm Dreeeeaaming Of a Whiiiiiiteee Racisttttt !!!" Iggy's response: "we've all read the script 49584068408540 billion times now, find a new game plan." She then suggested to her followers that they sign petitions, protest or donate and provided some productive ways you can help.
Meanwhile, both Iggy AND Eminem (and Macklemore) better step back, says J. Cole.

One of the big anticipated events at NY Super Week was "SLIMED: A Night of Nickelodeon Nostalgic Nonsense" at Hammerstein Ballroom on Thursday (10/10) featuring a live taping of Pete & Pete stars Danny Tamberelli and Michael Maronna's podcast, a segment on the music of Doug (a live performance by show creators Fred Newman & Dan Sawyer), and a live performance by Pete & Pete theme song band, Polaris. But less than a day before the event was to take place, the event has been canceled. There is good news, though, see below.
The sudden cancellation could have something to do with the Flavorwire interview with Matt Klickstein -- who was the host of the Super Week event and who wrote the SLIMED book about '90s Nickelodeon. You'd think it would be all fun and "remember when" interview, but it got into some thorny territory, including bashing of the current state of Nickelodeon, but also...race and sexism. An excerpt:
The reason Pete & Pete does so well is it's the best show from that era. It's the best show from that network! Hands down: the way it looked, the music, the fact that they got all these really interesting cameos... so the fact that it happens to take place in the suburbs of New Jersey, you know, it's a whitewashed area! There's nothing to be said about that. So too with Clarissa.And there's lots more:
I think it's worse when they shove it in there. Sanjay and Craig is a really good example, which funnily enough is written in part by Will McRobb and Chris Viscardi from Pete & Pete. That show is awkward because there's actually no reason for that character to be Indian -- except for the fact that [Nickelodeon President] Cyma Zarghami and the women who run Nickelodeon now are very obsessed with diversity. Which is fine -- do what you're gotta do, and Dora [the Explorer] was certainly something of a success, but there's no reason for [Sanjay] to be Indian at all. No one working on that show is Indian. They're all white. It's all the white people from Bob's Burgers and Will and Chris.
I think that it does the culture a disservice. If I were Indian or Jewish, for example, and watched something where the characters are Jewish or supposed to be, and if it's not specific to that, then I start to wonder, "Why are they doing this?" It becomes blackface.There's much more to this interview and you can read the whole thing here.Some people are sticking up for Klickstein, like Trevor Eyster who played "Sponge" on Salute Your Shorts. He wrote a lenghty post on Facebook, saying Klickstein was a victim of "corporate interest and censorship":
They're exploiting this, they're using this thing, they're taking advantage of it. They're doing it just for that reason: "Hey, here is the Jewish character" or "Hey, here's the Indian character" or "Hey, here's the token black," which I think South Park does so amazingly well. For example, I've worked very closely with people with disabilities, volunteering, sometimes paid, and I love what South Park does.
The decision to cancel the event was made by Comic-Con. And while they haven't released a statement, it would sure seem like this is a case of a corporate entity not wanting to be attached to the opinions of another that would seem controversial, or unclarified....This is a bummer for '90s Nickelodeon fans -- many of whom were coming from out-of-town for this -- but there is a silver lining as the Super Week event is now, basically, happening as two smaller, separate events on Thursday. First is "Slimed! An Oral History of Nickelodeon's Golden Age" at Treehouse Theatre (154 W 29th St, New York,) from 6 - 9 PM, featuring the music of Doug with a live performance by show creators Fred Newman & Dan Sawyer and hosted by Nick Arcade's Phil Moore. It's $8 at the door and Super Week ticketholders get priority entry. More info here.
...I am standing by my friend, because that's what friends do. I am asking all of you to deepen your understanding of the TRUE narrative here. And the true narrative is: Nickelodeon once represented the spirit of the anti-corporate. Now, while Nickelodeon didn't curate, sponsor or endorse this event --- all of the interested parties, are fans of its 90's "products". In order to hold an event of this size, logistically, there was a need for a Comicon. Comicon yanked its support at the last minute, and that's who you need to be upset with...
...You can be upset with Matt for a badly worded interview all you want - but it's not only unproductive, it's misdirected.
You oughta be PISSED OFF at the corporate heads of Comic-Con for pulling the plug from an old-paradigm fear-based profit-motive mentality.
Then later Thursday night (10:30 PM) at The Bell House it's a live taping of Danny Tamberelli and Michael Maronna's podcast, The Adventures of Danny & Mike, with a live performance by Polaris. Tickets to that show are $10 and on sale now. AND, update: Danny Tamberelli "just wanted to say that I was really looking forward to a night of nostalgia and to hang with the fans of all things 90s nick. Sometimes weird stuff happens that you can't control. Polaris and the podcast want to try to create something out of the ashes like a Phoenix. (also a ginger ironically)."
If you miss it, Polaris returns to the road in November for more shows including a BrooklynVegan-presented NYC show at Knitting Factory (though that one is sold out).

Somebody noticed a Florida band called "Me Chinese" on the CMJ lineup and has since been getting the word out on social media that this band with a racist name exists and is booked on shows. The shows are happening at NYC venues like The Flat, The Paper Box and The Rock Shop (with Party Lights and many more). The band meanwhile is defending their name, but have already apparently been kicked off of the Paper Box show.
I want to thank the rad, bold friends of integrity who have joined me in making it VERY clear that racist bullshit - in this case, a band's name - is plain NOT acceptable in this day and age.In the comments of the same Facebook post, Amanda posted a private message from the band where they explain their name. You can read that below:
The band in question's name is ME CHINESE.
CMJ bookers have somehow felt it appropriate to include them on their bills.

Blood Orange / Sean Nicholas Savage
In the latter half of the set, after dedicating "Chosen" to Michael Brown and two others, Devontè Hynes had to have a say about what's been happening recently in the world. "I hate what's happening in Ferguson right now. F-k Ferguson. F-k Lollapalooza. I hate this f-cking police state we're living in - not New York, I mean the world. I'm going after Lollapalooza and I'm going to f-cking destroy them." Really, he explained, that he just wanted to dance and couldn't because of the pain in his leg, ostensibly caused by he and his girlfriend being attacked by a security guard at Lollapalooza in retaliation for Hynes speaking out against racism and police brutality. Dev Hynes' Blood Orange project played a free Central Park Summerstage show on Saturday (8/16). It was opened by Arbutus-signed prolific lo-fi pop songwriter Sean Nicholas Savage (who played Death by Audio a night earlier) and Moses Sumney whose one-man/loop-pedal set included a Majical Cloudz cover. Blood Orange played to a capacity crowd, bringing out frequent collaborator Samantha Urbani for a few songs, Charlift's Caroline Polachek for "Chamaky," and grime vet Skepta for "High Street." As you can read in the quote above, Dev gave some politically charged speeches in between songs, as he was clearly emotional about the situation in Ferguson as well as his brush with police at Lollapalooza, where he was wearing a shirt emblazoned with the names of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, and others.

Women's rights organisations have demanded music industry leaders take heed of criticisms involving "sexist and racist" content in music videos.The Basement Jaxx video in question can be viewed below...
The End Violence Against Women Coalition, Imkaan and Object have published a report, called Pornographic Performances, condemning the portrayal of women in pop videos as hyper-sexualised and "endlessly sexually available" objects.
Those who view such videos have been found to have an associated tolerance of racist, sexist and even rape-tolerant attitudes, the research states.
Calvin Harris' Summer, Never Say Never by Basement Jaxx and Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines are cited in the report, which is being sent to leading figures in the music industry, as well as media regulators and politicians, with recommendations of change.
The three organisations advocate compulsory age ratings for all music videos, to ensure there is consistency in the regulation of music videos viewed online and on hard copy, as with film.
Sarah Green, of the EVAW Coalition, said: "Some forms of media, such as television and film, are well regulated and our society accepts and supports this. Other forms like music videos are getting away with very little scrutiny and as such seem to be competing for who can most degrade and insult women."
"If the 'creative' people who make them won't stop this, regulators should rein them in and implement age ratings," she added. [IB Times]

Canadian electronic music festival Bass Coast issued the following statement this week:
For various reasons, Bass Coast Festival is banning feathered war bonnets, or anything resembling them, onsite. Our security team will be enforcing this policy.Hopefully music festivals not technically on "indigenous land" follow this fest's lead!
We understand why people are attracted to war bonnets. They have a magnificent aesthetic. But their spiritual, cultural and aesthetic significance cannot be separated.
Bass Coast Festival takes place on indigenous land and we respect the dignity of aboriginal people. We have consulted with aboriginal people in British Columbia on this issue and we feel our policy aligns with their views and wishes regarding the subject. Their opinion is what matters to us.
Bass Coast happens Aug 1-4, 2014 in Merrit, British Columbia with mostly acts we're not familiar with.

Varg Vikernes, the eternal lightning rod for controversy, is back in a French court on charges of "inciting racial hatred." Vikernes was arrested in July of 2013 due to suspicions that the one-time black metaller was "plotting a massacre." While Varg and his wife were eventually released since authorities couldn't find evidence of a specific plot, he was still charged with posting racist and anti-Semitic views on his blog. Police also stated they found anti-Semitic evidence on a seized computer. Varg's defense?
Vikernes told the court that according to Norwegian secret police there were "at any given moment 350 people pretending to be Varg Vikernes on Facebook", adding that "anybody can very easily put up a blog" that appeared to be one of his.This is another entry in a lifetime of legal troubles for the former Mayhem bassist/Burzum mastermind. In 1993, Vikernes was arrested for arson, burning down at least seven churches, and for the murder of his Mayhem bandmate Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth. He served 16 years of his 21 year sentence, eventually resettling in France with his wife and children.
This news comes the same week his new album, Burzum's The Ways of Yore, was released (a return his synth dominated works, adhering to a statement made earlier in the year that he "no longer plays metal music.")
Kurt Scurlock w/ The Lips @ T5 2013 (more by Dylan Johnson)
When we initially reported that Kliph Scurlock was no longer drummer for The Flaming Lips, we didn't know the reasons behind it, but this week details of the whole thing have come to light. Scurlock claims he was fired by frontman Wayne Coyne after taking a stand against against Christina Fallin, singer in band Pink Pony and daughter of Okalhoma Governor Mary Fallin, who wore a native American headdress in a publicity photo on her Instagram (which has since been deleted, as has a letter her band posted to Facebook defending their actions at the Norman Music Festival):
Despite "Do You Realize??" no longer being Oklahoma's song, the young Fallin and Coyne are friends and when she allegedly told the Lips frontman about Scurlock taking jabs at her on Facebook, the drummer claims he got the axe.
Kliph wasn't fired for calling Wayne out on his midlife crisis b.s. (although if anyone in that band had the nuts to bring it up to Wayne, it would be Kliph!) He was fired for taking a stand against Wayne's new buddy - the daughter of OK's tea-bagging, homophobe governor Mary Fallin - when she donned a Native headdress for a racist publicity stunt. When Kliph called her out on social media for being a shithead to the Oklahoma Native community who complained about her headdress publicity stunt, she tattled on him to Wayne. Wayne actually told Kliph he was fired for insulting Fallin publicly.The story broke wide this week thanks to a story on the Red Dirt Report. They read the BV comment and confirmed it with an anonymous source. Kliph then seemed to confirm the story via tweets that supported the Red Dirt story. That was followed by a story on Gawker. Today Scurlock told his side of the story via a statement sent to Pitchfork:
he texted me again pressing the headdress photo issue. In my desire to have this done and over with, I apologized and said I wouldn't do it again. He responded, "... Ha ha... You so full of shit ... You're a fucking coward !! Go stick up for your Indian friends if its so important to you !!" It devolved from there, with him later texting, "I think..... I am gonna make it so your 'beliefs' no longer have any association with the Flaming Lips .." More name calling followed with him finally sending me a text at 3:49 a.m. on March 20 that said I was fired...There's a lot more than that and the entirety of Scurlock's statement is below.
...Christina Fallin and the rest of her lame band tried to get publicity for a recent live performance by spreading the rumor that they were going to perform in full Native regalia. My good friend (and someone I admire deeply) Samantha Crain organized a peaceful protest. The band mocked Native culture and was very antagonistic towards the protesters by flipping them off and trying to get security to remove them, despite them being out of the sight lines of the audience. Wayne and his girlfriend were apparently there making fun of the protesters (I can't confirm this because none of it is on video and I wasn't there) which enraged a lot of people, which led to someone telling the local press the reason I was fired, which led to the furor over the past several days.
The Oklahoma Governor's office is getting a lot of strange press of late. Have you seen that statue of Lucifer the Satanic Church wants to put outside the Capitol Building?

Jesus was Jewish according to the know-it-all people. How that is offensive? I don't know. Not too surprising that the word "Jewish" hits some nerves though, like "don't go there, go anywhere but there." "Crush the Black Prophet" would not have sat well, "Crush the White Prophet" would definitely be questionable. The original title makes sense.Racist? In the closet racist? Not racist? Ex-racist that won't admit being racist? Just trying to be extreme? "Extreme" is no excuse for racism? What do you think?
What is ironic is that some argue that he was not a prophet at all, rather God himself. The followers can't even agree at times which of the two he was: God or a prophet. Confusion. Just like confusion in our scene: people want their music extreme with this vicious edge but they raise red flags if something seems to be going in a particular direction that may be hitting home.
In the future, making statements of any kind is always possible. I have been told that speaking your mind is respectable. When a band plays it safe all the time, you can't help but wonder if some people have forgotten what Metal is about.
Inquisition recently played Irving Plaza as part of the Metal Alliance tour, which also brought them to Brooklyn for an EASTER show at Saint Vitus with tourmates Goatwhore, 1349, Inquisition, & Black Crown Initiate. Behemoth are also on the tour with ends in Seattle this weekend, but only played Irving in NYC.
Homeboy Sandman and friends
Not counting a May 3rd show at Cornell, rapper Homeboy Sandman will kick off a North American tour in Nashville on June 4th and hit Santos Party House in NYC on June 12th with The Difference Machine, P.U.D.G.E, and "Special Guest DJ" EDAN. Homeboy recently added to a front page controversy via an article he wrote for Gawker entitled "Black People Are Cowards". He writes:

Bob Dylan had been having what seemed like a great year, having gone on a massive tour, made an interactive music video, and released a huge box set, but now reports are coming in that he's being sued by a group of Croatians for racism. In a 2012 interview with Rolling Stone, Dylan made a comment comparing the conflict between Catholic Croats and Christian Orthodox Serbs to that of Jews and Nazis and slavery in America:
This country is just too fucked up about color. It's a distraction. People at each other's throats just because they are of a different color. It's the height of insanity, and it will hold any nation back - or any neighborhood back. Or any anything back. Blacks know that some whites didn't want to give up slavery - that if they had their way, they would still be under the yoke, and they can't pretend they don't know that. If you got a slave master or Klan in your blood, blacks can sense that. That stuff lingers to this day. Just like Jews can sense Nazi blood and the Serbs can sense Croatian bloodAccording to International Business Times, Croatian secretary general Vlatko Marić said, "It is an incitement to hatred. You cannot compare Croatian criminals to all Croats. But we have nothing against Rolling Stone magazine or Bob Dylan as a singer."
Business Insider mentions that due to Europe's strict free speech laws, Dylan and Rolling Stone would face a fine and formal sanction if found guilty.
Offensive Weapon, offensive indeed, at Acheron - 9/21/13
Brooklyn punk/metal venue Acheron faced some controversy over the weekend when they booked an Oi! skinhead show with Oxblood, Offensive Weapon, Stormwatch, The Wolverines, and Maddog Surrender on Saturday (9/21). Certain events that took place at the show prompted the venue to apologize to their regulars. A Facebook post from the venue reads:
It's 2013 and this should not have to be said, but let it be known that the Acheron has no patience or sympathy for any form of intolerance or fascism. The bullshit debate over Death in June is nothing compared to the unfortunate surprise we were presented with tonight. To any regulars that felt they needed to leave, please accept our apologies and know that more vetting will be done on all future shows.In the comments they continue:
To be clear: this is not directed at the promoters of the show, but at a certain segment of the crowd who made my patrons and staff uncomfortable, and me as well.The show was initially kept somewhat of a secret; Acheron never listed the show on their Facebook or website, and didn't even reference any details in their apology. The venue and address are even absent from the show's Facebook event on the label's site and from the flyer. The show is practically non-Googleable, and in a YouTube video we found of Offensive Weapon's set at the show (which also doesn't list the name of the venue), the singer (at 5:50) mentions that they kept the show a secret because of their "friends in the Antifa" who they then dedicate a song called "Yellow Journalist" to.
...No one was out of line and the crowd was generally very polite and under control. I have no personal issue with anyone at the show and certainly not with the promoters. As a promoter myself for nearly 20 years. I am certainly sympathetic and understanding. Nonetheless, when a member of the crowd says to my door person "you don't get to talk to me. You're not even white". I have a responsibility to address that.
...I just want my regulars and those that see offensive things posted on the internet to know that we do not support the views espoused by some members of the crowd last night and would rather not, at the end of the day, be party to those who would literally wear intolerance on their sleeve. As a business owner, I will always be polite and treat customers with respect. However, I would rather not invite customers that would alienate other customers.
Antifa is an anti-fascism group who makes it a point to try and shut down shows they believe include bands with fascist beliefs (like Death in June for instance). Members of Offensive Weapons and/or their associates have been pictured wearing Anti-Antifa shirts (not to mention red suspenders). According to record label, Pure Impact, Offensive Weapon are "one of THE non-PC American skinhead bands of the moment, tough Oi! with a touch of hardcore, true heirs to the old Youth Defense League style." But according to some, "All 'no politics' means for these lowlifes is: boneheads welcome."
Regarding the political or non-political motives of the bands on the bill, in response to the venue's Facebook status, Heidi Cavegurl Witmann (self proclaimed girlfriend of Oxblood's drummer) commented:
Seriously? There WERE NO NAZI BANDS THERE LAST NIGHT...there was a mixed crowd there and a few with opposing viewpoints and sure, I saw a few white power skins there...but I actually had a GREAT time last night, as ALMOST everyone was on their best behavior...funny that it seemed like it was the "ladies" who caused the only real ruckus. Fuckin sad...I actually dug the Acheron and it's staff until this thread. This is just another reason why I don't even make it out to see my own boyfriend drum for Oxblood. I have known them all for years and and this racist talk about any of those bands is so fucking tired already. I don't date or cohort with racists and I certainly don't stay commited to one for 13 years. I went to see our best friends (Frank and Val Bruno) come from Texas and to see and hear some kickass Rock and Roll...oh yea...and to watch my man kick some ass on the drums!! The sold out Cold Cave / Boyd Rice show scheduled for tomorrow (6/28) at TT The Bear's in Boston, MA, a Bowery Boston production, has been cancelled. Venue manager Kevin Patey commented on the cancellation to Vanyaland:
"We've made the decision we didn't want this person in the room. After researching the artist and discussing it with promoters in other cities, we made it clear to the agent that we didn't want this person to perform at our venue. We weren't canceling Cold Cave, but the agent said the show wouldn't happen without the opener. It was the agent's decision. So regrettably, the show was cancelled.""This person" is of course noise artist Boyd Rice, the controversial former Death in June member whose ties to Nazism, satanism, and accusations of misogyny continue to follow him. Some argue that Rice is just a provocateur using "shock tactics." What do you think?
In the show's stead, the Boston venue is holding a benefit for "local womens' groups and/or shelters."
This is not the first cancellation of this tour. Dates in Toronto and Montreal were also called off for the same reasons. Rice's inclusion on the Cold Cave tour also enraged Philly ANTIFA folk, where that stop ended up being canceled, resulting in last week's late night Saint Vitus show. Chicago ANTIFA are none too pleased either, and claimed to have shut down the Empty Bottle show on 6/24 with a smoke bomb (though the show went on as planned). Cold Cave's upcoming dates with Rice (who performs with the band) include Montreal tonight, and a sold-out Brooklyn show at 285 Kent on 6/28.
Don't have a ticket? Don't want to support Boyd Rice, but not holding it against his collaborators? Cold Cave also just announced a September 4th Brooklyn show at Glasslands.
Label 56, the Linthicum-based record label that released music by End Apathy -- the band fronted by alleged Sikh temple shooter Wade Michael Page -- released a statement Monday afternoon, responding to Page's relationship with the label. It reads:"Please do not think we are all like that." Is it okay if we still think you're all scumbags though?
Label 56 is very sorry to hear about the tragedy in Wisconsin and our thoughts are with the families and friends of those who are affected. We have worked hard over the years to promote a positive image and have posted many articles encouraging people to take a positive path in life, to abstain from drugs, alcohol, and just general behavior that can affect ones life negatively. Likewise we have never sought attention by using "shock value"/ symbols and ideology that are generally labeled as such. With that being said, all images and products related to End Apathy have been removed from our site. We do not wish to profit from this tragedy financially or with publicity.
In closing please do not take what Wade did as honorable or respectable and please do not think we are all like that.

The record label is owned by Clemie Richard Haught Jr. and was incorporated on Nov. 30, 2005, according to legal documents. In addition to releasing music from End Apathy, Label 56 distributed albums such as Bully Boys' "White Kids Gonna Fight," Sadus' "Out For Blood" and the White Wash/Brutal Tactics split "Southern Aggression."
Last February, Label 56 released a split seven-inch record featuring two songs each from End Apathy and Definite Hate. In an email describing the releases, End Apathy is described as "aggressive California 80's skate punk sound." Definite Hate is described as "Southern White Boy Music ;) [sic]." [Baltimore Sun]
Wade Michael Page with a rather suspect tattoo, playing in front of what looks like a rather unsavory flag
The man who allegedly murdered six people at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee yesterday, identified in media reports as Wade Michael Page, was a member of two racist skinhead bands -- End Apathy and Definite Hate, a band whose album "Violent Victory" featured a gruesome drawing of a disembodied white arm punching a black man in the face. In the drawing, the fist is tattooed with the letters "HFFH," the acronym for the phrase "Hammerskins Forever, Forever Hammerskins."Really, really sad.
The Hammerskins is a nationwide skinhead organization with regional factions and chapters that once dominated the racist skinhead movement in the United States.
Both of Page's bands played with a revolving lineup of musicians, and their music was at one time featured on the Hammerskin Nation record label. In 2010, Page and his band mates -- including Brent Rackley, a member of a Confederate Hammerskins chapter in North Carolina -- played at a racist music festival called Independent Artist Uprise in Baltimore. Other bands featured at the show were Blue Eyed Devils and Max Resist, both influential mainstays on the hate music scene. -[SPLC]

Chaos in Tejas have announced another round of bands for their 2012 shindig (first round here), including rare appearances from legendary post-hardcore band Moss Icon (a one-time only reunion), as well as Japan's Reality Crisis and Skizophrenia (their only US dates), and repeat offenders/favorites like Dropdead, Municipal Waste, Midnight, Ares Kingdom, Puerto Rico Flowers, Xeno & Oaklander, Thou, the Rival Mob, Boston Strangler, Crazy Spirit, Brain Killer, Power Trip, Wiccans (who just played one of the final shows at Emo's), and many many others. Since the original announcement, two previously announced bands have dropped off the original lineup: Mexican black metal band Nyogthaeblisz disappeared from the lineup after their anti-Islamic/Semitic/Abrahamic stance and involvement in known NSBM (National Socialist) label Satanic Skinhead was pointed out by a few blogs. That led to Antisect and The Mob even threatening to not play. Word then spread that Disma's Craig Pillard released nazi-glorifying records under the name Sturmfuhrer. Disma then dropped out as well due to "the drama" that ensued. Craig would not comment on the matter, but other members of Disma say he has changed.
In related news, Thou will hit the road for a string of dates with The Body this week on the West Coast. Both bands will also be at the inaugural Gilead Media festival (chaired by the Gilead Media label) in Oshkosh, Wi on 4/28 and 4/29 which will feature appearances from (in alphabetical order) Arms Aloft, Aseethe, Ash Borer, Baby Boy, Darger + Plague Mother, False, Fell Voices, Get Rad, Hell, Loss, Mutilation Rites, Northless, Protestant, A Scanner Darkly, and Sleepwalker. Is John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols on a mission for as much press as possible? If so, it's working. First came the incident with Bloc Party's Kele which also involved the Foals and which Lydon denied has anything to do with racism. Since then:
The Sex Pistols demanded a fence be erected around their toilet at a music festival last weekend. The punk rockers reportedly didn't want to share their private toilet and asked for a high security barrier to keep people out at Scotland's Live at Loch Lomond festival. Frontman John Lydon - also known as Johnny Rotten - was also said to be incensed when he realised electro band Autokratz were being driven around the event in a better car than his band, and demanded the vehicles were switched. Autokratz singer David Cox told Britain's Daily Star newspaper: "The Sex Pistols had two Land Rovers to ferry them around the site but Johnny seemed to prefer our car.Clever. And:
"So he made us take all our equipment out so he could travel 40 metres in it."
Once the switch had been completed, John allegedly shouted: "Autokratz, as we have taken your Auto you are now just Kratz."... [New Zealand City]
[Lydon] addressed the racist row that he was caught up in over the last 10 days when he sang a song about Allah and Jesus. He sang: "Allah be praised, George Bush be erased. Hello, Allah. Hello, Jesus too." He then told the crowd: "That is a little challenging to some of you. "So just in case you missed it the f****** papers had the f****** liberty to call me a racist. "I say hello, Allah. I'd like to buy Allah a f****** good pint of larger." Rolling up his sleeve, he berated fans saying: "Are you our friends? Well then, drink your beer instead of throwing it, you f****** idiot." Johnny also had a dig at Coldplay, saying: "This is audience participation 100 per cent. We're the Sex Pistols, not f****** Coldplay." And Rotten had a pop at Happy Mondays. They were head lining the Good Vibrations stage while the Pistols were on the main stage. The godfather of punk said: "Is there anybody there? Is there anybody over at Happy Mondays? That's a shame.".. [The Daily Record]How punk. "It's the most wonderful thing ever, playing to our multi-racial audiences, which they always have been," he said. "And not only that, multi-gender, multi-everything-you-like, we are open to all. Our whole message in life has been to eliminate the barriers that separate us."

Speaking exclusively to MTV News Gruff Rhys from the group said: "It was horrific. Kele is a very brave man and what he said is exactly what happened."
The band were backstage at the Summercase Festival in Barcelona with other British groups when the alleged assault took place and confirmed they saw everything.
Neon Neon and Super Furry Animals singer Gruff added: "The statements Kele has said are absolutely true. It did happen."
Neon Neon are up for this year's Mercury Prize, a prize that Gruff (Super Furry Animals 'Rings Around the World;') lost to PJ Harvey in 2001.

John Lydon has responded to allegations of his involvement in a racist assault by saying his accuser is a liar and in need of the publicity. In a carefully worded statement, Lydon said: "I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening." In Lydon's version of events, the Sex Pistols singer claims that, "trouble was brought us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security". He added: "If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into." [Guardian]In related news, Bloc Party bassist Gordon Moakes will not be with the band when they arrive in North America next week. The reason: "in order to prepare for the imminent arrival of his first child."
Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke claims he was left with severe facial bruising and a split lip following what he alleges was a racist attack by Sex Pistols singer John Lydon [aka Johnny Rotten]. The incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Summercase festival in Barcelona while the bands were socialising backstage.
In an official statement released by Okereke, who is of Nigerian descent, the singer says he approached Lydon and asked him about the possibility of a reunion for Public Image Ltd, the band Lydon formed following the Sex Pistols demise in 1978. In Okereke's words, Lydon became "intimidating and aggressive while his entourage responded with a racist tirade, including the statement, 'your problem is your black attitude'." An assault allegedly ensued in which three people attacked Okereke.
Several other bands witnessed the incident, with members of the band Foals and Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson intervening on the Bloc Party singer's behalf. Both have confirmed to the Guardian that the incident occurred but could not confirm or deny reports that the assault was racially motivated.
