Turbonegro played a sold-out Santos Party House on 11/18, a one-off appearance in celebration of the World Snowboarding Championships. The show was preceeded by an invite only party at the venue featuring the night's host Andrew WK performing with his band in the much smaller basement space. Here are pictures from both.

Turbonegro will reunite to play Santos Party House on 11/18, as part of the World Snowboarding Championships (WSC) kick-off party with host Andrew W.K. Tickets are on sale. The band, who recently parted ways with long-time vocalist Hank von Helvete, will be sporting the following lineup: Tony Sylvester, Happy-Tom, Euroboy, Pål Pot Pamparius, Rune "Rune Rebellion" Green, Tomas Dahl.
Here's what those involved have to say about it:
"This is just unbelievable," says Andrew W.K., co-owner of Santos Party House, and the entertainment beacon of the WSC. "We're hosting the first TURBONEGRO concert in the USA with their new singer and it's a dream come true for me, Santos, and New York City in general. Making it all part of the WSC opening party just takes it over the top! It's going to be unreal. TURBONEGRO are one of my favorite bands of all time, and so many other people around the world have been looking forward to their return. Santos and I are thrilled to be involved in this important event."So far, the show seems to be a single, one-off US reunion show and their first US date since Coachella 2009. We'll let you know if that changes, but until then enjoy some Turbonegro videos below.TURBONEGRO says: "We are super stoked to be involved in the World Snowboarding Championships, which we know will be the most rock'n'roll sports event ever."
WSC CEO, Henning Andersen says: "It was Happy Tom from TURBONEGRO that connected us with Andrew W.K. in the first place. Now Turbonegro supports the WSC with an exclusive US gig at Santos Party House. It almost feels too good to be true! Making this happen in New York helps us pay respect to the origin of our sport. Our heritage is American board sports and the great lifestyle that comes with it."

Lo-fi rappers Main Attrakionz (aka Squadda B and Mondre) dropped a new album 808s & Dark Grapes II last week (8/16) for free on their bandcamp. It's a pretty tight collection of hazy blown out beats and laid back flow. Check out the Clams Casino-produced "Take 1" featuring ASAP Rocky, which you can grab above. Tee album art, tracklist, and a video for "Perfect Skies" are below.
Main Attrakionz will make their NYC debut on Friday (8/26) at the New Museum. Tickets are on sale now and are $2 less for New Museum members. El-P signs to Fat Possum, released a new song for Adult Swim, played in Company Flow @ Santos (pics)

Company Flow @ Santos

Brooklyn MC El-P has released a new "censored mix" of a new song, "Drones Over Brooklyn" for Adult Swim. No word on if the track, currently downloadable below or via the Adult Swim site, will appear on El-P's new LP Cancer for Cure due on Fat Possum next year. El-P is now labelmates with Mellowhype, Yuck, The Smith Westerns, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, AA Bondy and many more.
El-P (and collaborator Trent Reznor) also recently provided the soundtrack to a gang of methheads in Jessie Pinkman's apartment on AMC's Breaking Bad, as the sound of smoking blue rocks were drowned out by "Flyentology" from I'll Sleep When I'm Dead.
El-P was supposed to play Terminal 5 with the Streets tonight (8/12), but it was cancelled. However, he and his former crew, Company Flow, reunited at Santos Party House on July 16th with fellow unsung NYC crew The Juggaknots. The sold-out show featured full sets from both, as well as a collaboration between Breezy Brewin of Juggaknots and Company Flow to perform the classic Indelible MC's track "The Fire In Which You Burn". Belated pictures from Santos and "Drones over Brooklyn" below.

Nguzunguzu recently kicked off their tour with Gang Gang Dance and Total Freedom, though as mentioned, neither Nguzunguzu nor Total Freedom will be on Gang Gang Dance's NYC show when they headline a Rocks Off Concert Cruise on July 21. Nguzunguzu will instead play their own NYC show that day (7/21) at Santos Party House. The bill also includes Death Grips, Traxman, Azizaman, and Thomass.
Experimental rapper Death Grips recently released the Exmilitary mixtape, which you can stream (below) and download (above). The mixtape combines lo-fi and glitch hop, but unlike other indie-leaning hip hop, his delivery has more in common with hardcore hip hop. Death Grips also plays one of Jelly's RockBeach shows at the Aviator Sports Complex on July 24 with Bass Drum of Death, MNDR, The Miracles Club, and Night Manager. More dates and three Death Grips music videos are below.
Bass Drum of Death also play two shows with WU LYF on July 22 at Mercury Lounge and July 23 at Knitting Factory. Both shows are sold out.
You can also catch Azizaman at Santos tonight with Omar Souleyman and Janka Nabay.

the girls of Black Ryder @ Austin Psych Fest

Australian duo (and band) The Black Ryder are in town this week, after having played Austin Psych Fest over the weekend (pictures in this post). They played Glasslands last night (5/3) with the Big Sleep, and will play the downstairs room at Santos tonight (5/4) with Heaven and My Best Fiend. Before Psych Fest they went on a short tour with Spectrum.
Made up of former Morning After Girls members Scott Von Ryper and Miss Aimee Nash, The Black Ryder released their debut Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride in late 2009 which got released in America last year on Mexican Summer. Members of Black Rebel Motorcyle Club, Swervedriver and Brian Jonestown Massacre guested on the album which should give you a good idea of what they sound like. To give you an even better idea, download "Gone Without Feeling" at the top of this post.
The openers at Santos tonight are pretty good. My Best Fiend are not that far from Spiritualized angelic comedown vibe -- download their Jesus Christ EP for free here. The three guys in Heaven have played with Adam Franklin, Dean & Britta, the Comas, The Big Sleep and others and lay down a dreamy/heavy sound of their own. It's a well-curated night of bliss-out music at high volume, and stick around for the afterparty with Calle's Aurellio Valle DJIng (and others).

And though they have not added a fourth NYC show, tickets are on sale for an afterparty happening at Santos Party House on Thursday, May 12th. CSS are DJing it. Party host "Dark Disco" writes:

I knew that Steve Ignorant saying "The only the problem is the visas" wasn't a good sign. Steve posted the following 'Emergency Annoucement' to his website:
I'm really really gutted to have to let you all know that we have to reschedule our USA and Canadian gigs. There's a delay with the issue of the visas we require to enter the USA. We hope it will all be sorted soon but we will NOT be able to make the scheduled gigs. The first show, originally scheduled for March 10th at Santos, is now the last and happening on May 8th, and the recently-added 3/26 show at Don Hill's has now been moved to 4/20 at Europa, making it the new first show of the tour.I would ask everyone to please hold onto your tickets and give us about a week to announce new dates. We will reschedule as soon as possible and tickets will be valid for the rescheduled dates, however, if you think 'fuck it, I want my money back', then do that and I will completely understand.
I know that loads of you have been planning to travel for these gigs and that rescheduling them will be a right kick in the bollocks for you. I'm really, really genuinely very sorry about this. Please understand that this situation is costing me and the band a load of emotional upset, it's not the money, it's the letting you lot down, the bands that we were going to play with, all the people that have worked so fucking hard to put this thing together and if we could have done anything to avoid it we would have. Honestly, with all my heart, there was nothing else we could do. PLEASE, if you could let other gig-goers know that it's off for now through your emails and face books or whatever means you can please do so. I know these are only typed words and words aint enough but it's all I can do. To say I feel a right xxxt would be an understatement. This is the worse thing I've ever had to do. We really appreciate your support and we will do these gigs one way or another. Here are the rescheduled dates that will be confirmed as soon as our visas are confirmed. Until the powers that be grant us entry there's nothing more I can do at the moment. Again, I'm really so sorry about all this.
Everything is tbc pending visas but we are hoping they will get issued this week.
All tickets will be good for the rescheduled shows.
Meanwhile, the 3/10 show at Santos WILL happen, but just without any Crass...
Ok,so as most of you probably know by now Steve Ignorants' "Crass" has had some visa issues and is moving their show originally scheduled for THIS THURSDAY March 10th @ Santos Party House in NYC to May 8th 2011.All rescheduled tour dates are below. However the rest of the bands on the bill WILL BE PLAYING!!!
Line up is as follows:
LEFTOVER CRACK
THULSA DOOM (reunion)
A TRUTH
and special guest maybe.Show has two ticket prices:
$5 for anyone bringing proof of either a ticket or print out proving they purchased an online ticket for Crass (and you'll still be able to use that ticket at the CRASS make-up show on May 8th).

Austra played twice this past weekend: Friday night at Santos (which these pictures are from) and Saturday night at Glasslands. I caught the Glasslands show and, despite some truly horrible sound that buried the vocals for the first half the set, I left really impressed. Anyone who's seen Katie Stelmanis before knows her powerhouse pipes are a big part of the appeal, which she now augments in Austra with two additional singers, and the rest of the band (guitar, bass, keyboards). This was the first most of us got to hear Austra songs other than "The Beat and the Pulse" and their short set (seven songs?) highlighted the dancier numbers from their debut, Feel it Break, which is out May 17 on Domino. When sound issues were fixed, Austra really soared.
Of the newer material I really liked "Lose It" which seems likely to be the second single from the album, and the anthemic "Spellwork." But "The Beat and the Pulse," which has been all over the internet, was the crowd favorite. While that song does recall The Knife, those comparisons kind of melt away when you hear the rest of Austra's songs. It's not that far from what Stelmanis did as a solo artist, just more dancefloor-friendly. (There are a couple piano ballads as well, which is more in line with her solo work.) And when people get to hear more of the album, look out.
Domino has put a couple new, non-LP Austra songs on their Soundcloud page, which you can stream below. If you're going to SXSW, Austra will be all over the place down there (official Domino showcase and BrooklynVegan Saturday day party included) and I highly recommend you put them on your must-see list.
Video from Austra's Glasslands show, plus more pictures of Austra and opener Arpline at Santos, and the setlist, are below.

Weedeater played Santos on Feb 24th as part of an ongoing tour for the North Carolinians in support of their new LP Jason... The Dragon. Shortly after this weekend's Scion Rock Fest, Kvelertak will link up with the tour and they'll head on down to Austin for SXSW, teaming up with Trap Them, Hull, Rwake, All Pigs Must Die, and the recently added Goes Cube to play the BrooklynVegan/1000Knives stage at Full Metal Texas on 3/17 (Emo's 12 - 7PM). Before Tyler, The Creator lost his shoe and played Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Odd Future headlined at Santos on 2/15 to a sold out crowd of bouncy fans. The packed house saw the LA crew take their Gravediggaz/early Def Jux/Fondle 'Em sound to the stage, the show floor, on top of monitors, and behind wigs as they kicked out joints like "Yonkers" and "Sandwitches".
Check out the full set of pictures (below) from Santos of the band on-stage and off right next to a set of the crew backstage at Jimmy Fallon (?uestlove and Mos Def alert).
In addition, below you'll find some videos including an incredible one of Odd Future watching their Fallon performance played back to them for the first time

Win Win, a new crew featuring Devlin, XXXChange, and Ghostdad, have a self-titled LP due via Vice Records on Feb 15th. The LP features many guest shouts over its 15 songs including Lizzie Bougatsos of Gang Gang Dance (check out "ReleaseRPM" and its remix above and below), Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip (check out "Interleave" above and below), Matt Sweeney, Spank Rock, Andrew WK, and many others. Lizzie and Alexis will also be on hand to perform live with Win Win at their record release party at the Andrew WK co-owned Santos Party House on 2/15. The free show will take place downstairs at Santos while Odd Future is on the first floor ("limited tickets available at the door" for the sold out show).
Alexis Taylor also has a gig of his own scheduled a few days later. He'll bless the 1's and 2's at Brooklyn Bowl on 2/19.
Alexis Taylor has also been keeping busy with another new project...
"There are many surprising things indeed to be discovered in the course of listening to Start and Complete, the new album from About Group (out APRIL 26, 2011 on Domino Records), but perhaps none more so than the beautifully unorthodox genesis of the band itself. An About Group video trailer with full album tracklist, with a whole bunch of Win Win stuff, below...Comprising Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Charles Hayward (This Heat), John Coxon (Spring Heel Jack, Spiritualized) and Pat Thomas, who has played with the likes of Derek Bailey, Tony Oxley and others, the band originally formed to make a record of improvised music for the Treader label in 2009, having never played together as a whole before the day it took them to make their first album. After a clutch of live performances (supporting Gang Gang Dance, playing Ornette Coleman's Meltdown Festival and even Glastonbury, among others) they regrouped to record this album. [Domino Records]

Compared to fellow Georgians Mastodon & Baroness, Kylesa have always been sort of the underdog. Now entering their 10th year as a band, it seemed like sweet justice on Wednesday (1/26) to see the band pack a headlining show at Santos Party House, and play with another THREE underrated bands in their own right.
Rosetta, East of The Wall, and Fight Amp all deserve bigger audiences than they usually draw. East of The Wall's Isis-meets-jazzy-tech is technically astounding, brutal, and endlessly watchable. Fight Amp conjure the best of Am-Rep, leaning towards hardcore. Rosetta's post-rock-meets-hardcore is spacey, atmospheric, emotional, and a live juggernaut.
I could tell from not only the crowd's size, but from some of the faces, that Kylesa's new LP Spiral Shadow has been attracting attention from some different corners of the music world. Nevertheless, the bulk of the crowd popped for fan fave "Hollow Severer" (from 006's Time Will Fuse Its Worth). Material from personal fave Static Tensions received the same warm welcome... if by welcome you mean stagedives and windmills. It was another excellent set from this crew, who unfortunately had some extra work to do the next morning.

Kirk Windstein of Crowbar

I'm no expert on non-alcoholic beer. So when I see Kirk Windstein of Crowbar (who recently left alcohol rehab) hit the stage with a half-dozen bottles of suds, the mind gets curious. Fortunately, Clausthaler is definitely N/A.
"Let me get some more of that fake shit," Windstein says between songs, gulping it down.
Not to be the fun police or anything, but we need that bear guitar tone around for a while. And we definitely needed it Sunday night at Santos Party House, but it wasn't there, though not for any alcohol-related reasons, but more on that in a second.
Opening acts A Life Once Lost and Primitive Weapons started the show, but I missed them. I arrived in time for a rendez-vous with Black Tusk for the umpteenth time this year. The hard-touring band gave it their all on stage (per usual) but there's no fighting city hall or, to be more precise, a soundman more interested in his laptop. Black Tusk sounds this tinny? Unequivocally, no. The atrocious sound continued on to Crowbar's set, who followed the Savannah trio.
New Orleans juggernauts Crowbar have always had one foot in Sabbath-ian territory, but with sandpaper-y vocals that recall hardcore. As such, NYHC pit bosses were in full effect at the venue, and the mosh pit spiked in intensity for songs like "High Rate Extinction" and the encore of "All I Had (I Gave)". It calmed for tracks from Sever The Wicked Hand, the band's new and six-years-in-the-making effort on E1 due in February 2011, though the new songs seem to have the same gruff melodicism and signature Windstein riff badass-ery; they sound promising.
But they didn't sound good! Despite a killer and exacting set from Kirk & crew, Crowbar was a victim of the tinny sound at the venue. Their trademark low-end thump was noticeably absent from the PA. I eventually moved directly in front of the stage to get more from the backline of "Dime" amps (yes, as in Dimebag Darrell of Pantera), which helped immensely.
With a set heavy on favorites, Crowbar delivered despite the noticable obstacles. Crowbar also filmed a video for "The Cemetary Angels" from the new LP while in NYC. Look for that soon. More pictures from the show below...
