The Black Lips, who are known for their raucous live show, brought their usual antics to the 4Knots afterparty at Beekman Beer Garden at the South Street Seaport on Saturday night (7/14), but things got a little out of hand this time. The barricade was (not surprisingly) quickly ripped down by fans who broke into a sweaty pushing, moshing frenzy for the uncontrollable garage rockers. However, at this particular Black Lips show, the security guards were not having it. They began to rough up audience members who were getting crazy and allegedly ended up injuring some concertgoers. One of those claiming to be hurt emailed us and said, “getting dragged out in a choke hold is not my idea of a good time”. He also sent us this picture he claims are “a few wounds inflicted by security”….

As shown in a video from the show which you can watch below, before going into “Modern Art,” the band took to their mics to tell security to “calm the fuck down” and said, “You don’t have to beat up anybody, it’s just a rock and roll concert.” A “Fuck that shit!” chant was also started and continued through the start of the song. The Village Voice, who presented the 4Knots festival and the Black Lips afterparty that this all went down at, point out that guitarist Cole Alexander, who had encouraged the crowd to “tear down that barrier” tried to help the fans who were getting hit, but he was shoved back on stage.

Many fans who were at the show took to twitter to talk about their experiences. @aewsome posted multiple tweets, saying, “Security has totally lost control of this Black Lips show. Arbitrarily roughing up people for no reason. Completely fucked up,” and “Kids acting no different than any Black Lips show I’ve seen. This was seriously [some] of the roughest security I’ve seen.”

UPDATE: The Village Voices issued a statement shortly after we posted this article.

As previously mentioned, earlier in the day there was also a fire at South Street Seaport while the actual 4Knots Music Festival was going on. You definitely can’t say this year’s fest (which Archers of Loaf headlined, but more about that in a bit), wasn’t eventful.

The Black Lips video and more pictures, though they were mostly taken before things really got out of control, from the ruckus at Beekman Beer Garden, below…
