"The Snow Ball Music Festival [in 2011] was chill, in more ways than one. Besides the expected below freezing temperatures Avon gets in early March, the atmosphere of the festival and attitude of the attendees were very relaxed. The tents were set up on snow instead of concrete, and so dancing the first night was no small fete as everyone was slipping on the ice. By the end of the weekend, any movement at all was unpleasant as people were standing in puddles of water, beer, and probably some bodily fluids or stuck to the ground in thick mud. The crowd left their clubbing attire at home and sported their neon ski coats instead as they drifted through the clouds of cigarette and marijuana smoke. Despite the cold weather and the impossible dance floor, most importantly, the music was good." [cause=time]The SnowBall Music Festival, for people not afraid to watch bands playing outside in freezing temperatures ("We recommend that you come prepared for snow and winter conditions. Temperatures are expected to be in the low 40° range during the day and in the teens at night. Please dress accordingly."), is returning to Vail Valley in Avon, CO from March 2 - 4, 2012. This year's lineup includes Big Boi, Big Freedia, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. (who just announced a Bowery Ballroom show), Deer Tick, Gauntlet Hair, Major Lazer, TV on the Radio, Thundercat, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and others (listed below)
Early bird and holiday special passes are sold out but regular passes and tickets for the festival are on sale now. Don't forget your "Warm Jackets, hats, gloves, and snow boots."

Tonight's sold out White Lies/Asobi Seksu show at Highline Ballroom has been cancelled due to the lovely weather we're having.
Charles Cave, in a note to their fans has said, "we're bitterly disappointed to cancel our NYC show. We've been excited about it for months but a freak snow storm has made it impossible for us to get there. We promise to reschedule the show as soon as possible and return to the big apple in style. We're all really sorry." Ticket refunds are available at point of purchase, stay tuned for news on an upcoming New York City show this spring. You can however still catch Asobi Seksu at Mercury Lounge on February 17th with Family Band and Elika (and BRAHMS djing between sets). Tickets are still on sale.

On a silent and snow-covered street in Brooklyn, Toxic Holocaust demanded a circle pit. The eager crowd at the Acheron on Wednesday (1/12) was willing to oblige them, but settled on a plain old mosh pit instead, which just raged even harder. That's the mark of a great live band. They say. The crowd does. The snowfall brought out the rage in the band too.
"Fuck snow! It took forever to shovel out fucking van. So it's great to have everyone out tonight!"
Toxic Holocaust was in town to launch a tour following the completion of their new-and-forthcoming LP for Relapse Records. Details are limited, but it is expected to be out "late spring 2011". Their tour continues tonight in Pittsburgh. All dates below.
Mortals was the lone support for Toxic Holocaust after a last minute (snow-related) cancellation by The Ominous Order of Filthy Mongrels, and the all-female trio delivered a heavy/sludgy batch of tunes to set off the evening right.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS RESCHEDULED!
(12.28.10 - 3:00PM EST)***saddest update ever from the Brokenhearted Blizzard Wizard***
(aka least popular girl in Asbury)It is highly unlikely that any roads in Asbury Park will be cleared any time soon and therefore unlikely that we will be able to have a show at The Stone Pony even by tomorrow or Thursday. In anticipation of this likelihood that we will have to continue to cancel or postpone all shows, we have decided to move the entire Home For The Holidays to FEBRUARY 9-12, 2011. We know so many of you have made special arrangements and plans to be here and we wish things could be different. Tickets from the first night (Dec 26) will be honored on Wednesday February 9th, tickets from the 2nd night (Dec 27) will be honored on February 10, the 3rd night (Dec 28) on February 11th, and the 4th night (Dec 29) on February 12. So confusing!!! We are working on the revised schedule (not all the bands will be able to come back :( mope mope) and will announce those on Tuesday, January 11th. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase, but we really hope you can join us in February...
Drowning in tears and waist-deep in snow, with great love from Asbury Park HQ
p.s. For those of you stuck in town, we are working on a consolation party for later... Stay tuned... But please please please, other people, you cannot even drive to town, let alone park, so don't try to come unless you are walking!!!
Asbury Park, NJ (catherwood65)

Tonight/Tuesday's Bouncing Souls "Home for the Holidays" show at The Stone Pony is officially cancelled. As of 1:30pm the band says, "STAY TUNED FOR CONTINGENCY PLANS!". Monday's show was also cancelled, and Sunday's was postponed (with new openers) until Thursday.
UPDATE: All Bouncing Souls shows have been postponed.
As previously mentioned, Lauryn Hill ended up postponing Monday night's Highline Ballroom show until February 1st, but Bowery Presents assures me that the show scheduled to take place tonight (12/28) at Music Hall of Williamsburg is still happening. All Lauryn dates, including the Wellmont Theater one that is still on sale, HERE.
As also previously mentioned, Estelle's show at Best Buy Theater is cancelled, but I think it was cancelled before it snowed, and tonight's Jaguar Stone show at SOB's has been postponed.
Lady Lamb the Beekeeper has cancelled her show at Rockwood Music Hall tonight due to illness.
A list of shows that are happening tonight/Tuesday, HERE.
Please list any other snow-related cancellations or postponements in the comments.

The Bouncing Souls are supposed to be playing their third show in a row tonight at the Stone Pony, but they haven't even played one yet, and as of 11am they're still not sure if tonight's will happen either:
UPDATE: Bouncing Souls is cancelled. As of this moment (11am) the streets surrounding the Stone Pony remain unplowed.. We have hired private plow people to come dig out the area.. And are therefore hopeful the show will go on.. But it is too early to call as of yet. Please stay posted... What else?

The Bouncing Souls were supposed to kick off their 4th annual 'Home for the Holidays' run of shows at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park last night (12/26), but...
"We are concerned for everyone traveling and have no choice but to postpone. [Sunday]'s events will be moved to THURSDAY Dec 30th. Show time will still be at 7pm. The Great ExplainerAs you can see, I crossed out "and Strike Anywhere" because they have since announced that The Loved Ones will replace them on the rescheduled show.and Strike Anywherewill still play, but sadly A.O.D. will not be in NJ by then. We are also moving the afterparty at the Asbury Lanes to Thursday night. We will still be playing the first 2 albums on Thursday. The other nights' schedules will remain unchanged. We hope you can join us on Thursday. If you can't, please request a refund at the point of purchase by noon on Thursday. Be safe, stay warm. With heavy hearts we remain yours."
UPDATE: Tonight's show is cancelled too:
Holy smokes!!! For those of you outside the Jersey Shore zone of disaster: there is a lot of snow (2-5 foot drifts!!) and gnarly winds. We are under a state of emergency and transportation is impossible. The roads are not plowed in Asbury park and are impassible. We have no choice but to cancel tonight's show. Please go to the point of purchase for a refund. If you purchased your ticket from Chunksaah Online, we will refund your PayPal account in the next 3 days (4 day pass holders will get back $25). This is really disappointing for all of us, not the festive holiday party we planned at all! I just spoke to the Fake Problems camp and they are unable to get a flight. Lemuria were more than willing to attempt to get here but I told them to stay safe in Syracuse. The crazy kids in The Swellers made it all the way to the Asbury exit of the Garden State Parkway (represent Flint, MI!!!). We are so grateful to everyone for these heroic efforts!! The poster signing for 4-day pass holders will now be on Wednesday at 6pm. The shoe sale will be Wednesday at 7pm. If you are stuck in town... Check back later, we will try to have a get together later if we can ever get anywhere... With sighs and mopes we deliver these sad tidings... -K8Stay tuned to BouncingSouls.com for more updates, and check out the whole week's schedule (as of now), below...

Woe ruling

Those of you who travel in the underground metal circles, and live to tell about it, have probably encountered Kim Kelly. The current Philadelphian, whose credits include Terrorizer, Hails & Horns, Metal Injection, Noisecreep, her own PR company (CatharsisPR) and many other ventures, is probably the girl you see on the verge of whiplash in the front row of Eyehategod, or the smiley one with the invisible orange.
In her latest travels, Kelly took a trip to Richmond to take in the Heart of Winter Fest at Alley Katz in Richmond, VA (Friday, Jan 29- Saturday, Jan 30, 2010). The two-day festival featured appearances from Woe, Bastard Sapling, Battlemaster, Evoken, and many others. The "Winter" fest was also, appropriately enough, hit with a major storm that buried the mid-Atlantic in snow. Rather than get buried south of the Mason-Dixon line amidst 24 inches, she and Diana Lee Zadlo opted to leave before it was over, or as the kids call it, GTFO. Her full story is below...

Unlike Dr. Dog who literally made it snow inside the Brooklyn bowling alley during their concert on December 11th, Class Actress and Phantogram played their show at the venue (Saturday night, 12/19) while the first big actual snowstorm of the winter was happening outside...
"Phantogram's Sarah Barthel is so adorable and very charismatic and the electro-rock duo had everyone dancing their asses off and wanting more when they finished their set. I'm not really sure what to say beyond that they put on a great show. Their music is unique and yet can appeal to many different types of people, and the eclectic audience loved them. Not only is it great dancing music, it's also great driving music. Definitely worth the snowy trek." [guilt free pleasures]More pictures from the show/snow, below...

Grant Hart

Blurt: Do you ever feel like your contributions to Husker Du are overlooked?tonight in NYCGrant Hart: This isn't thrown out as a condemnation of Bob, but I think that my fans know my material better than a lot of Bob's fans know his material. The reason I say that is every time I've gone to see a Bob Mould concert, someone has yelled out the name of one of my songs. When I'm out touring, I maybe hear that one out of five concerts.
The last couple of years of Husker Du proved this, but the larger your audience is the more dumb elements it's going to encompass. Bob's fans who never heard Husker Du, but heard Sugar first have more of a "Grant sucks" kind of attitude. I think with the popularity of Copper Blue, Bob ended up with a bunch of cowboys for listeners. If Bob and I were as competitive as our fans are, we would have never gotten past Land Speed Record.

Ted Leo just let Santos know that he's in Rhode Island where there's too much snow to drive to NYC for tonight's show, so... he will no longer be playing the New Years Eve show.... UPDATE: In Ted's own words::
At 8:30 last night, my dear friend Simon, who is doing some booking for Santo's, called to asked me if I wanted to jump up and play 2 or 3 songs between Andrew WK and Gang Gang Dance on New Year's Eve (tonight) at Santo's in Manhattan. I am, for better or for worse, currently in Rhode Island, but I initially said "yes" to doing the show - sounds like fun, right? Right! But I woke up this morning to a bastard of a blizzard here by the ocean in Southern New England. I understand it's not as bad as all that in NYC, but it's the getting there that's getting me down - there's just no reasonable way for me to make this happen without pushing the boundaries of safety and what little sanity I have left after the fall and early winter that has been, so I am, unfortunately, pulling out of the event.
I know that it seems like I've been canceling a lot of things lately, but first, I was only asked to do this less than 24 hours ago, second, it's just bad frakking timing and bad frakking luck, and third, with the exception of the entire tour I had to cancel in 2003 due to vocal chord injuries, the cancellations that have happened this fall and winter are more than all of the previous cancellations I have made in my ENTIRE 20 years of playing music. So please bear with me - tough times out there - they find everybody, in their own way, eventually...
I am extremely sorry, and I hope to see you all back out there soon.
Be well, and happy new year!
