SO

Sylvan Esso released their new 12" single "Coffee" today on Partisan and the band have made a pretty snazzy video for it. Directed by Dan Huiting, the video is set in a few different eras. Dancing is the theme as it visits an Appalachian contra-dance, a proper Durham, NC house party, and also a '50s-era sock-hop. You can watch it below and look for their album on May 13.

Having just played SXSW (including one of our day parties), the duo are currently in Europe but will be back for a tour with tUnE-yArDs later this spring that wraps up with two shows at NYC's Webster Hall on June 22 & 23 (tickets).

Updated tour dates, plus the "Coffee" video, below...

Grizzly Bear / My Morning Jacket in Times Square - 10/12/13
CBGB's
CBGB'sCBGB's

In between the day's coffeehouse-ready beginning and stadium-worthy end, Divine Fits and Grizzly Bear delivered the two most CBGB-worthy sets of the day: It was easy to picture Divine Fits' (and Spoon's) Britt Daniel and Grizzly Bear's Ed Droste in the recesses of a rock club, though the North Stage of the festival, sidled up alongside the Ed Sullivan Theater, felt as natural an arena as any for their straightforward rock stylings and fuzzed-out, exploratory soundscapes, respectively. As the 2013 festival season nears its end, both Grizzly Bear and Divine Fits have hopscotched between the stages of the country's biggest productions, and the two bands made for standout moments at CBGB just as they did at Bonnaroo and Outside Lands before them.

My Morning Jacket's grand finale at CBGB was fortified by friends, as special guests hopped on and off the stage for the final moments of the festival. Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard and Antibalas collaborated with Jim James for the recently released tribute Fela Kuti compilation RED HOT + FELA, and their performance of "Trouble Sleep Yanga Wake Am" was as meditative and serene as it was explosive and untethered. Jakob Dylan then joined in for a take on "Don't Do It" from The Last Waltz before My Morning Jacket wrapped up the festival with "One Big Holiday," which relished in its might as a literal and figurative showstopper. [Rolling Stone]

We're now in the midst of CMJ, but this past weekend another music marathon took over NYC, CBGB Festival. The fest didn't have much in the way of CBGB-related music (or much at all), but like last year, the main attraction was a big free Times Square show. This year's show started with Lisa Loeb, followed by The Wallflowers, then Spoon/Wolf Parade-related supergroup Divine Fits. People then began really piling in for James Murphy's DJ set, which was followed by Grizzly Bear, and finally My Morning Jacket, who brought out The Wallflowers' Jakob Dylan, Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard, Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs), and Antibalas (who played two of their own NYC shows that weekend). Despite seeming like a potential disaster, the whole thing actually went over pretty smoothly. Pictures of the whole day are in this post.

More below...

Latyrx

Deltron 3030 aren't the only alternative hip hop group making a long-awaited comeback this year. Bay Area duo Latyrx (aka Lyrics Born and Lateef the Truth Speaker) are planning to release the followup to their sole album, 1997's The Album, on November 5. The album, appropriately titled The Second Album, features guest appearances by Zion I, Busdriver, The GIft of Gab, Corey Glover (of Living Colour), and more, in addition to production by tUnE-yArDs, Chris Funk (of The Decemberists), Jel (of Anticon), and more.

The album's newest single is the laid back cut "Exclamation Point" (produced by and featuring Forrest Day), which is out today and makes its premiere in this post. Check it out, along with the video for another track "Gorgeous Spirits (Aye, Let's Go!)," album artwork, tracklist and list of tour dates (none in NYC), below...

Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono is releasing a new Plastic Ono Band album this year, the first one since 2009's Between My Head and the Sky. It's called Take Me to the Land of Hell, and was produced by Yoko herself, along with Sean Lennon and CIbo Matto's Yuka Honda. Sean and Yuka will be releasing it via their Chimera Music label on September 17. It also includes some interesting guests, like tUnE-yArDs, Questlove, Nels Cline, Cibo Matto, Cornelius and Andrew Wyatt (of Miike Snow), and will feature remixes by Mike D & Ad Rock and Cornelius. Get a taste of the new album with the song "Moonbeams," which you can stream below.

Yoko, who turned 80 this year, doesn't appear to have a tour scheduled at the moment, but she does have a show here in NYC two days before the album's release at Bowery Ballroom (9/15). Tickets for that show go on AmEx presale today (7/31) at noon, with a a general on-sale starting Friday (8/2) at noon.

Justin Vernon w/ Bon Iver in Austin in 2011 (more by Tim Griffin)
Bon Iver

Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, who recently collaborated with Kanye West, and is also about release a new Volcano Choir album (aka his collaborative project with experimental rockers Collections of Colonies of Bees), is also working on a project with gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama, who have been around since the 1930s. Earlier this year, he announced he'd be producing their new album, I'll Find A Way (due out 10/1 via Sony Masterworks), and it's since been revealed that he's contributing his vocals to a cover of Bob Dylan's "Every Grain of Sand" for the album. You can listen to that track now over at Pitchfork, and check out the full tracklist (which also includes collaborations with My Brightest Diamond, Sam Amidon, tUnE-yArDs, and more) below.

Speaking of Bob Dylan, his tour comes to the NYC-area for its first of five shows this week. The first show was initially supposed to happen in Bridgeport, CT on Friday (7/19) at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard with My Morning Jacket and Wilco, but that show has been moved to Bridgeport's Webster Bank Arena, and MMJ and Wilco are no longer on the bill. UPDATE: MMJ and Wilco are still playing. Tickets for the Webster Bank Arena show are available, and all tickets purchased for the Ballpark at Harbor Yard show will be honored.

Jim James at Firefly Fest 2013 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Jim James

The other NYC-area shows will go on as planned on 7/21 at Saratoga Performing Arts Center with My Morning Jacket and Wilco (tickets), 7/26 at Hoboken's Pier A Park with MMJ and Wilco (tickets), 7/27 at Jones Beach with Beck and Wilco (tickets), and 7/28 at Susquehanna Bank Center with MMJ and Wilco, which is also part of the 3-day XPoNential Music Festival in Camden (Bob Dylan tix, XPoNential Fest passes).

Dylan, Wilco and MMJ kicked off the tour towards the end of last month, and at their recent Toronto show (7/15), Wilco's Jeff Tweedy and MMJ's Jim James joined Dylan on stage for a cover of traditional song "Twelve Gates to the City" and for Dylan's own "Blowin' in the Wind." You can watch a video of the former (via Consequence of Sound), along with the setlist from that show, below.

Bob Dylan also just announced that he'll release Bootleg Series. Vol. 10: Another Self Portrait (1969-1971), a box set that collects rarities and outtakes from the Self Portrait and New Morning era, on August 27. The trailer video and tracklist for the box set are below.

Updated dates are listed, along with all videos and stuff, below...

Katrina and the Waves

Back in 2010 we asked tUnE-YarDs, Fucked Up, Sam Amidon, Doveman, and Deer Tick to cover songs by Katrina & the Waves for a tribute CD in celebration of their hit song "Walking on Sunshine" (which Sam and FU both covered). We released those five tracks online, but the EP never got an official digital release until now! Find all five songs, along with a bonus one recorded by Dawn Landes, at iTunes, Amazon, Spotify AND RDIO.

Meanwhile, Sam Amidon just released an album on Nonesuch and is touring. Fucked Up play Governors Ball this weekend and House of Vans this summer. Doveman aka Thomas Bartlett just played with the National at Barclays Center and is producing a new record for Dawn Landes who is currently touring Europe but will be back to play Rockwood Music Hall on July 9. Tune-Yards recently played the Tibet House Benefit and played with Roomful of Teeth at Lincoln Center where Thomas Bartlett (Dovemen)'s band (one of the many) The Gloaming is playing outside in July. Deer Tick recently played two nights in Chicago and is on the lineup of a new Boston fest happening this fall.

"Highlights of amazing @tibethouseus concert: Ira Glass dancing, Jim James singing, & Patti Smith & Phillip Glass performing a Ginsberg poem." - Ann Napolitano

Jim James and Ariel Pink (via Force Field)
Jim and Ariel

The 23rd Annual Tibet House Benefit Concert went down at Carnegie Hall last night (2/21) with Jim James, Merrill Garbus (aka tUnE-yArDs), Ariel Pink, Patti Smith, Rahzel, Tenzin Choegyal, Jesse Smith, and artistic director Philip Glass, with backing from Scorchio Quartet, dancing from This American Life's Ira Glass, and an opening Monk chant.

As these shows usually go, the participating musicians all collaborated with each other on stage throughout the show. Some highlights include Ariel Pink being joined by Philip Glass at one point and then Merrill Garbus at another, Patti Smith reading Allen Ginsberg's "Wichita Vortex Sutra" as Philip Glass played backing piano, and the concert's final song, which saw everyone but Pink coming on stage for Patti Smith's "People Have the Power."

If you were there, did you see Uma Thurman in the audience? She was there with her father, Robert, a Buddhist writer who is President of TIbet House US, and who, along with Philip Glass, gave an introductory speech at the concert.

The full setlist and a couple shots of Jim James' set below...

Tune-Yards

The Tibet House Annual Benefit Concert will return for its 23rd year at Carnegie Hall on February 21. Like in past years, artistic director Philip Glass will perform and he's brought along a typically awesome and diverse lineup of Jim James (whose band My Morning Jacket just kicked off a 3-night run at the Capitol Theatre), tUnE-yArDs, Rahzel, Patti Smith with Jessie Smith, and more TBA. Tickets for the concert are on sale now via Carnegie Hall and special packages that include a dinner reception with the performers can be purchased via Tibet House US. Proceeds from ticket sales will support Tibet House US, the Hurricane Sandy Relief Foundation, and the TIbet Community of New York & New Jersey.

Rahzel also took part in the 2012 Tibet House Benefit Concert. Check out pictures from that.

In related news, Patti Smith recently announced that she's working on a sequel to her memoir, Just Kids.

Roomful of Teeth

Back in June, vocal octet <a href=Roomful of Teeth played an Ecstatic Summer show with Merrill Garbus (aka the brains behind tUnE-yArDs) to perform some compositions that Merrill had written for the group along with some tUnE-yArDs songs as well. Some of those compositions will appear on the new self-titled Roomful of Teeth album, which is due out October 30 via New Amsterdam Records. One of those songs, "Quizassa," can be downloaded above, and it's instantly noticeable that Merrill had something to do with it. The album also features songs composed by William Brittelle, Caleb Burnhans, Rinde Eckert, Judd Greenstein, Caroline Shaw, and Sarah Kirkland Snider. The album tracklist and cover art are below.

Roomful of Teeth will also play a free show in NYC on Thursday (10/4) at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. The show starts at 10:30. They'll be performing material from their album and also the NY premieres of new works by Missy Mazzoli.

Album info is below.

Naytronix

As mentioned previously, tUnE-yArDs bassist Nate Brenner has a solo project coming out under the name Naytronix and the album will be out October 9 via Plug Research. We've got the premiere of the band's new video "Don't Walk Away" which you can watch below. With its horn-filled arrangement, it's a catchy little number. There's also a stream of it too, along with the Yalls remix of the track.

Naytronix have also just been tapped to open for Why? for part of their upcoming tour, though not at the NYC stop at Music Hall of Williamsburg in September. Hopefully Naytronix will schedule a show here soon. Meanwhile, you can check out all announced Naytronix dates listed below, along with the video and song streams.

Lollapalooza 2012 - Day 2
Lollapalooza 2012 - Day 2

Lollapalooza continued in Chicago's Grant Park yesterday (8/4) after beginning one day earlier (8/3). Day 2 gave us sets from Frank Ocean, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, tUnE-yArDs, The Tallest Man on Earth, Neon Indian, Chief Keef, Bear in Heaven, Washed Out, The Weeknd, and more. Unfortunately, during Neon Indian's set (which was cut short), the festival was shut down due to "dangerous weather," causing the tens of thousands of fans to flood the streets of Chicago in evacuation. But the fest reopened at 6 PM CST with an updated schedule. A number of performances were cancelled, including Alabama Shakes, B.O.B., Chairlift, and the Temper Trap, but others, like tUnE-yArDs, were rescheduled and took place at later times after the gates reopened.

If you aren't at the fest, have you been streaming it online? Today's stream begins at 1:30 CST.

Pics of day 1 are HERE. More pics of day 2 are below...

Merrill Garbus at World Financial Garden - 6/30/12
ECSTATIC SUMMER with Roomful of Teeth, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, William Britelle, and The Yehudim

tUnE-yArDs mastermind Merrill Garbus teamed up with Roomful of Teeth, William Britelle and Judd Greenstein & The Yehudim on June 30 to kick off the indie/classical Ecstatic Summer concert series, which is part of the River to River festival and happens this summer at the World Financial Center. Merrill played both solo and with vocal group Roomful of Teeth, who also performed Merrill and William Britelle compositions at the show. Merrill's set included tUnE-yArDs songs including a new one called "Not Dead Yet." The Yehudim, who count Olga Bell as a member, opened the show (and that's why Olga couldn't be in Montauk with her new band Dirty Projectors that night. Olga has since played Music Hall and Prospect Park with the Projectors who she is now on tour with). Here are some pictures from the Ecstatic show.

The series of free shows continues this Saturday (7/14) with Oneohtrix Point Never, David Lang, and A Far Cry Orchestra. As mentioned, "The third show is on August 25 and will feature Brooklyn disco orchestra Escort collaborating with the equally large Darcy James Argue's Secret Society."

In other tUnE-yArDs news, bassist Nate Brenner also has a solo project called Naytronix, under which he will release his debut LP, Dirty Glow, on October 9 via Plug Research. That LP will be supported with a TBA fall tour, which includes MusicFestNW. The cover art, tracklist, and a video for the appropriately named track, "Robotic," are below, along with more pictures from the Ecstatic Summer show.

tUnE-yArDs at Terminal 5 - 6/1/12
Tune-Yards

Over a year after the release of her album w h o k i l l, tUnE-yArDs still seems to be going strong, playing her biggest paid show yet at Terminal 5 on Friday (6/1). Did you go? How was the show?

If your copy of w h o k i l l is played out, Merrill teamed with Questlove, Beninoise singer-songwriter Angélique Kidjo, and Ghanaian-American rapper Akua Naru for a cover of Fela Kuti's "Lady" which is on the new (Red) Hot + Fela tribute and is streamable below. They played this at Terminal 5 immediately after tUnE-yArDs' ended and the T5 crowd stuck around to dance to it instead of shuffling off home.

The Terminal 5 show was with Micachu & the Shapes who play tonight (6/4) at Glasslands, and Delicate Steve who's new album was streaming via public listening ports at various Manhattan/Brooklyn locations over the weekend. More pictures of tUnE-yArDs, plus Micachu and Delicate Steve, are below.

Delicate Steve

Delicate Steve's second album, Positive Force, is out July 10 on Luaka Bop and you can download two tracks from the album at the top of this post. If you'd like to hear more, Delicate Steve has devised a sort of scavenger hunt, installing playbutton devices in ten locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, each containing one of Positive Force's tracks. The two-borrough musical installation is up now (5/31) through June 3. Locations of all ten tracks are below -- it's supposed to be a nice weekend, might be a fun thing to do. If you do decide to try and find them, bring your own headphones which you can plug into the playbutton devices.

In other news, Delicate Steve is currently on tour with tUnE-yArDs which hits Terminal 5 on Friday (6/1) with Micachu & the Shapes on the bill for that one as well. Once that tour wraps up, Steve will join Yeasayer on the road before doing his own headlining shows on the West Coast. All Delicate Steve tour dates are below.
