Delicate Steve

Delicate Steve's second album, Positive Force, is out July 10 on Luaka Bop and you can download two tracks from the album at the top of this post. If you'd like to hear more, Delicate Steve has devised a sort of scavenger hunt, installing playbutton devices in ten locations throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn, each containing one of Positive Force's tracks. The two-borrough musical installation is up now (5/31) through June 3. Locations of all ten tracks are below -- it's supposed to be a nice weekend, might be a fun thing to do. If you do decide to try and find them, bring your own headphones which you can plug into the playbutton devices.

In other news, Delicate Steve is currently on tour with tUnE-yArDs which hits Terminal 5 on Friday (6/1) with Micachu & the Shapes on the bill for that one as well. Once that tour wraps up, Steve will join Yeasayer on the road before doing his own headlining shows on the West Coast. All Delicate Steve tour dates are below.

Micachu and her buddy Kwes

Micachu & the Shapes will release their second album, Never, on July 24. The first track from the album has just been loosed to the internets -- the drony, mechanical "OK" which you can download above. Cover art and tracklist for the album is at the bottom of this post.

You can see Micachu live sooner: they open for tUnE-yArDs at Terminal 5 on Friday (6/1) and we're giving away tickets to that show over on the BV Facebook page, so check there for details.

Micachu have also just announced a headlining show at Glasslands on Monday, June 4 with Zambri. Tickets for that show are on sale. Micachu will also play the PS1 Warm-Up on July 28 and tickets to that show go on sale June 18.

Michachu also released a new mixtape with pal Kwes and you can stream the entirety of Kwesachu Vol. 2 below, along with a list of all dates.

Jack White/The Roots

Jack White

The one galvanizing main-stage performance at the Sasquatch festival this year was Jack White's weapons-grade electric guitar soloing on Saturday. Otherwise, it was by the book in the best possible sense. Thousands of people gathered peacefully and everything was on schedule.

The festival, which ended Monday with a performance by Beck, featured dozens of live rock, rap, electronic music and comedy acts packing five stages for four days over the sunny Memorial Day weekend...

...Oakland's Tune-Yards mesmerized at the Bigfoot Stage Saturday. Leader Merrill Garbus faced the full yellow sun and belted out powerful melodies in her alto voice that seemed beamed in from African radio. She used looping pedals to blend the vocals with drums and modified ukulele, which she also played live. But her bassist and jazz horn players sent the music through the roof, chipping in on junkyard percussion -- dented pieces of metal hit with drum sticks. [Seattle Times]

The Sasquatch Music Festival happened Memorial Day Weekend in Gorge, WA and Day 2 (Saturday, May 26) insanely packed with talent, featuring sets from Jack White, The Roots, tUnE-yArDs, Purity Ring and lots, lots more. It was so overstuffed, we're breaking Saturday's pictures into two parts. See more pics of Jack White and The Roots' Sasquatch set, plus other artists below, with more to come. Check out Day 1 photos HERE.

tUnE-yArDs at Coachella 2012 (more by David Andrako)
tune-yards

Indie/classical festival Ecstatic Music Festival has expanded and now includes a free summer concert series called Ecstatic Summer, which is part of the River to River Festival and will happen at the World Financial Center. The first show will is June 30 with Merrill Garbus (tUnE-yArDs), 8-piece vocal group Roomful of Teeth, composer William Britelle, and The Yehudim. Roomful of Teeth will be performing compositions by Merrill Garbus and William Britelle, and in addition Merrill will be playing some tUnE-yArDs material as well.

The second show is on July 14 with Oneohtrix Point Never (Daniel Lopatin), composer David Lang, and A Far Cry Orchestra. The show will include some re-arrangements of Oneohtrix Point Never material.

The third show is on August 25 and will feature Brooklyn disco orchestra Escort collaborating with the equally large Darcy James Argue's Secret Society. They'll play new work in addition to interpretations of each other's existing work.

Speaking of tUnE-yArDs, their tour comes to NYC next month for a previously mentioned show at Terminal 5 on June 1 with Micachu and the Shapes and Delicate Steve. Tickets are still available. The video for "My Country" is below...

Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2
Coachella 2012 - Second Week Day 2

"For a certain breed of diehard Coachella fan, once is just not enough. And since 2012 is the first year that the epic desert music and arts festival is being mounted twice in Indio, California, it was inevitable that some of the most obsessed would find a way to attend both three-day weekends.

"The Monday after the first one, I was kind of licking my wounds and I said, 'Hey, let's go again! I'm down. I get paid on Friday. It can happen," 28-year-old Carlos Morales, from Fullerton, California, told Rolling Stone yesterday. "Radiohead was a big part of it. They were amazing, and I really wanted to see them again."

Tickets for a single Coachella weekend are hard enough to come by; in recent years, they've typically sold out within days of going on sale, which sparked the motivation for festival organizers Goldenvoice Productions to add an identical second weekend this year. About six percent of festivalgoers who bought tickets online directly from the promoter managed to pick up tickets for both weekends, said Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett. Resales are harder to measure, but last-minute impulse buyers for the second weekend were rewarded with some tickets being sold at below face value.

Alison Swing, 21, of Long Beach, bought her second set of tickets "from a friend of a friend of a friend" and got a $100 discount from the cover price, she said with a laugh. "It was nerve-wracking spending the money," Swing admitted, "but I wanted to go back so bad. I'll deal with it after." [Rolling Stone]

Coachella concludes today, Sunday, 4/22, Earth Day 2012.

You saw the pictures from Friday, a video of the Black Keys performing with John Fogerty, video from a Friday night party that Thom Yorke DJ'd, and Radiohead's setlist from Saturday. Here are the pictures from Saturday, 4/21/2012, Record Store Day, the 2nd day of the 2nd weekend of Coachella 2012.

As you can see in the above picture, The Black Lips paid tribute (if you want to call it that) to hologram Tupac (who should be making another appearance with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg tonight) with their own hologram (actually a cut out) of Biggie Smalls. St. Vincent joined Andrew Bird on stage to help perform "Lusitania." Azealia Banks, in a different looking outfit than last week, apparently suffered a wardrobe malfunction. A$AP Rocky was joined by Master P, Romeo, No Limit and many other friends on stage in the Gobi tent, as he and Radiohead simultaneously closed out the night once again.

More pictures from all of Saturday, and a video from ASAP's guest-filled set, below...

Lollapalooza (more by Grant MacAllister)
Lolla

Chicago Sun Times reports:

Lollapalooza has revealed its official 2012 list of performers -- a typically wide-ranging smorgasbord of genres and styles topped by nearly a dozen mainstage headliners: the Red Hot Chili Peppers, freshly reunited bands Black Sabbath and At the Drive-In, the Black Keys, Jack White, Florence + The Machine, the Shins and Passion Pit, plus spotlighted electronic music including Swedish house titan Avicii, French dance duo Justice and DJ-producer Bassnectar.

The annual music festival is scheduled for Aug. 3-5 in Chicago's Grant Park.

Rumored lineups have circulated widely, as they usually do, and Lollapalooza itself stoked the speculation in recent weeks via a series of CTA and online advertisements that seemed to hint at who would be playing.

The ads featured lyrics from such acts as Sigur Ros, Santigold, Jack White, Kimbra, Twin Shadow, the Weeknd, Bloc Party and more -- all bands that wound up on the bill.

Check out the full list below...

tUnE-YarDs

As tUnE-YarDs' show at Lincoln Center's Allen Room, part of the American Songbook series (which Bill Callahan played one night earlier), was coming to an end last night, the tweets started pouring in: "@brooklynvegan tUnEyArDs will be playing Columbus Circle within the hour. Get there!", "@brooklynvegan can u spread word that Tuneyards doing free show out by Lincoln Center fountain", "@brooklynvegan tune yards are playing in Columbus circle NOT lincoln center fountain", and "@brooklynvegan She said it was NOT a show. Sasquatch

"Following last year's 10th anniversary, which crushed previous attendance records and set a new mark for the speed with which tickets sold out, the Sasquatch! Music Festival unveils its 2012 lineup which once again features 4 days of music. The festival, hailed as "a model of well-paced programming...in a four-day schedule as efficient and natural feeling as an expertly built algorithm" by NPR Music while Wired notes, "leave the landscape out of it and Sasquatch! has a lineup to kill for," runs May 25-28 (Memorial Day Weekend) at The Gorge, the internationally acclaimed concert venue carved in the basalt cliffs high above the Columbia River Gorge in Quincy, WA."
The Sasquatch! Music Festival takes place, as usual, at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-28). And this year's lineup is:

Pazz and JopPazz and JopPazz and JopPazz and Jop

The Village Voice has changed in 39 years, but Pazz & Jop, their annual music critic survey still remains. Each year, just when you forgot that it was still possible to look at another "Best of the year" list, the Voice comes along and prints their Pazz & Jop issue and we get excited about albums that came out the previous year again, or we at least start debating them again. This year's big winners are tUnE-yArDs (best album, 12th best single) and Adele (best single, 8th best single, 6th best album). Look at it all at the Voice's site.

Our own list, if you missed it, is HERE.

list

I hate writing year-end lists, as might be obvious to many long-time BrooklynVegan readers. That said, I also like them. They help organize things, which is related to my problem though. I'm too unorganized and hectic to ever get around to making one! But this year a few of us (BrooklynVegan contributors) got together and decided to come up with a collective list of albums that we loved that we think most represented 2011 in BrooklynVegan land. Our indie rock-centric list purposely does not include metal (that's HERE) or hip hop (we should make a separate list). With that in mind, our top 26 albums of 2011, in alphabetical order, are listed (with some commentary and a list of honorable mentions too) below...

Continue reading "BrooklynVegan's Favorite Albums of 2011"

Adele

We already posted Pitchfork's and SPIN's, so... here's Rolling Stone's top 50 albums of 2011. It's got tons of big sellers and major label players taking high spots like Adele, Jay-Z and Kanye West, Paul Simon, and Lady Gaga, but then something unexpected like tUnE-yArDs places at #13. There are also some odd inclusions like Wavves' Life Sux EP and then some albums you could only find on a Rolling Stone list like SuperHeavy (the supergroup featuring Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and others). They also give shots to Little Dragon, Josh T Pearson, Das Racist, Wild Flag, and many more. Check out the full list below...

Spoon @ Fun Fun Fun Fest
fun fun

Spoon had nothing to promote and no surplus of new songs to unveil. This was just an Austin band -- Austin's biggest indie band ever -- playing an Austin festival for their only major show of 2011 (at least so far). As a live unit, the four-piece that recorded Transmission (augmented here by an additional percussionist) is as precise as Spoon has ever been, cranking out savagely controlled, often slow-building versions of such songs as "Written in Reverse," "Delicate Places" and the instantaneously applauded "I Turn My Camera On." "We got horns!" frontman Britt Daniel proclaimed, bringing out a six-man section for "Cherry Bomb," "The Underdog" and "Jonathan Fisk." By the four-song encore, the crowd had both increased in enthusiasm and decreased in size -- no doubt some people had wandered to another stage to see the Damned, which Daniel himself had said he wished that he could do. [SPIN]
Personally I started at the Damned (who were great) and finished Saturday with about 30 minutes of Spoon which felt like the perfect chill ending to a long first-two-days of the outdoor Austin fest (right after their set I went back to the hotel, skipped all afterparties and crashed for 12 hours straight which made Sunday great).

Our first set of pictures from Saturday, Damned included, are HERE. Our second set continues, more of Spoon included, below...

Bill Callahan @ MHOW in July (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Bill Callahan

Lincoln Center's acclaimed series American Songbook returns to the elegant Allen Room in January for its fourteenth season celebrating the diversity of American popular song. For 16 nights the series will explore the best of the golden age of musical standards through to today's most dynamic songwriting. The music of Broadway, Latin culture and hip-hop, bluegrass, rock, and pop will be presented, along with three evenings devoted to great American composers and lyricists. The 2012 season - January 11 through February 11 - will bring to the stage some of today's most gifted interpreters of song, including Tony Award winners Laura Benanti, Michael Cerveris, and LaChanze, as well as the "Queen of British Musicals," the great Elaine Paige. In keeping with American Songbook's tradition of honoring great composers and lyricists, those being celebrated this season are William Finn (The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Falsettos), folk icon Woody Guthrie, and Jule Styne (Gypsy, Funny Girl). A relatively new composer on the scene, multiple Tony-winning Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights) will open the series with a new rap composition about Alexander Hamilton. Also performing in the rap/hip- hop vein is the exciting ensemble Ozomatli.

From the rock canon will be J.D. Souther, performing songs he wrote for Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles as well as newer compositions, guitar god Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth doing an acoustic set, and the wildly expressive Merrill Garbus, known as tUnE-yArDs.

Singer/songwriters, both emerging and veteran, are part of American Songbook as well. Diva of the demi-monde Keren Ann is part of the series, as is the man whose deep voice and masculine presence has earned him the nickname "The John Wayne of Indie Rock," Bill Callahan.

The spectacular Allen Room is located in Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center on Broadway at 60th Street. The Allen Room possesses one of New York's greatest settings - a stunning vista of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline that provides an evocative backdrop for the performers.

TICKETS can be purchased online beginning November 14, 2011 at Lincoln Center's website www.AmericanSongbook.org, via CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, at the Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall Box Office, or at the Frederick P. Rose Hall Box Office. Tickets for the Friends of Lincoln Center go on sale November 3, and single tickets go on sale to the public beginning November 14.
The full schedule is at Lincoln Center's site and below...

Tune-Yards

Garbus studied at Smith, the highly selective all-women's college in Massachussetts. It was a revelation after high school, "where girls were generally into having eating disorders and looking pretty and having sex. I still feel this kind of embitteredness about the fact that a lot of the men I work with haven't had such paralysing experiences growing up."

Her college experience included a semester in Kenya, where she lived among Muslim women and explored the country's music. She emerged with the political conviction that "the white western world was oppressing the rest of the world. And that sucked. And because I was part of the white western world I didn't deserve to live."

That's a lot of liberal guilt...

"Exactly. White-person guilt. That was supposed to be the name of my first album, and then someone was like, 'please don't call your album White Guilt'. And now I sort of wish I had." [Guardian]

Like she did on Monday, tUnE-yArDs headlined a sold out show at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC on Tuesday night (9/20). Prussia opened this one. Here are some pictures.

Tune-Yards

"w h o k i l l points in a thousand directions and gallops off toward them all at full tilt. It brings in African vocalisations, and moments of wild animal violence, and street riots, and intimate loved-up louchery. It co-opts sampling to create orchestral arrangements out of a single voice and polymorphic rhythms that seem off-kilter but then, with the addition of real drums and bass (the latter courtesy of new co-writing partner Nate Brenner), create complex, beguiling and intense rhythms. It is astonishing.

Rhythm section aside, so much of this is down to the one-woman volcano of ideas that is Garbus, the tUnE-yArDs conceptualist who once said her raison d'etre was to "get people's attention or die". She drew designs on her face, she made songs, she toured. Safe to say, she now has attention..." [MusicOMH]

Hum

"Matt Talbott tells me there's some Hum shows coming this fall! I don't have all the details yet, but here's what I know: there will be one on September 10th, and it won't be in Champaign. A show in Champaign is possibly going to be planned for September 9th, and they are playing Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX in November." -[h-u-m.net]
The above quote comes from a Hum fansite, and while we have yet to receive official word, it does seem within the realm of possibility considering that Hum have reunited occaisionally since officially dissolving in 2000. More news to come.

Hum released You'd Prefer an Astronaut in 1995 and the follow-up Downward Is Heavenward in 1998.

Though they haven't confirmed Hum, Fun Fun Fun Fest did recently "leak" some more of their Austin festival lineup. The first leak had Brian Posehn, Odd Future, Okkervil River, M83, and X (performing "Los Angeles"). The second leak added Reggie Watts, Flying Lotus, Tune-Yards, Ra Ra Riot and Kid Dynamite!

That now makes two upcoming shows for Kid Dynamite who are also playing FYF Fest in LA.
