Singer & guitarist/ukuleleist Shawn Fogel of the band Golden Bloom is Neutral Uke Hotel, a ukulele-based project that covers Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea in its entirety. He has a short tour lined up for the end of June with stops in NYC, NXNE in Toronto, upstate NY and a few other North East cities. He plays Mercury Lounge with The Handsome Family on Tuesday, June 15th where he writes, "We've got at least one special guest joining us for a song." Tickets are still on sale.
Fogel previously participated in "Beatles Complete on Ukulele" project, which performed at SXSW earlier this year.
Jeff Mangum played some of his Neutral Milk Hotel songs earlier this year at a benefit for Chris Knox.

Nellie McKay played two shows at Joe's Pub in NYC yesterday (April 1, 2008) (and another NYC show the day before that) (and she has even more coming up). I had tickets to the late show, but almost didn't go due to the freak rain storm. I don't know why I was so hesitant on going. I always enjoy myself at a Nellie shows, and last night ended up being no different. I got to the show around the start time of 11:30 thinking that she would be on time for once. No dice. She was half an hour late for the 9:30 show, so we got pushed back to midnight, but it wasn't that much of a hassle. We were finally let in as the audience from earlier show (David Byrne included) were letting out.
The show started and I saw two video cameras filming. I discovered later that they were a team of Canadian film makers doing a documentary on the ukulele, and that they decided to film Nellie playing one. I thought it was an April Fools joke at first, but it wasn't, and she ended up playing more songs than usual on the little instrument. She was quirky as usual, and the audience loved it. For the crowd favorite "Zombie," she brought in a couple of her friends (pictured) to act while she sang. That was definitely the highlight of the evening for me. More photos below.....
