Doldrums
Doldrums

Doldrums' new album, The Air Conditioned Nightmare, is out next week via Sub Pop. It's a real step up for Airick Woodhead who this time out matches his kitchen sink approach to electronic music with a stronger sense of melody and more of a direct eye on the dancefloor. If you wished 2013's Lesser Evil had more songs on the same level as "Anomaly," the new album is for you. You can stream the whole thing (via FACT) below.

Right after the album's release, Doldrums' tour with his brother Daniel's band, Moon King, will start. Both Daniel and Maddy Wilde of Moon King are in Doldrums' live band, and they were terrific when I saw them last year. See them if you can, like at their two NYC shows: Mercury Lounge on April 17 (tickets) and Baby's All Right on April 18 with Malory playing as well (tickets).

Moon King, meanwhile, have shared another track from their new album, Secret Life, which is out April 14 via Last Gang. "Roswell" adds synthpop shininess to their shoegazy sound which is promising. Stream that below as well.

After their tour with Doldrums, Moon King will head to Europe for dates with TOPS and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. All Doldrums and Moon King tour dates are listed below...

Outside Lands

Another Planet Entertainment, Superfly and Starr Hill, in a partnership with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department, have announced [the] lineup for the eighth annual Outside Lands Festival. After four consecutive sold-out years, the world's only gourmet music festival that Rolling Stone hailed as "one of America's best," and the Huffington Post called "a well-rounded cultural event," will once again take place in San Francisco's historic Golden Gate Park August 7 - 9, 2015. While the Eager Beaver on sale had the fastest sell-out in the history of the festival, a limited number of 3-Day General Admission and VIP regular tickets go on sale this Thursday, March 26th at 10am PDT via SFOutsideLands.com. A significant portion of every ticket sold will directly benefit San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department. The festival has given more than $10 million to the department since its inception.
The full lineup for this year's fest is listed, and in Funny or Die video form, below...

Wu-Tang

Coolio's PornHub collaboration is so last year. This week, the worlds of music and porn can't stop finding new ways to collide:

Wu-Tang Clan member, and no stranger to acting, RZA will be appearing in the upcoming biopic on the "World's First Latina adult film star" Vanessa del Rio (titled Vanessa del Rio). It also stars Zulay Henao as the lead, with Drea de Matteo (The Sopranos), Taryn Manning (Orange is the New Black), and others. In the director's chair is metal music video guy Thomas Mignone (Type O Negative, Megadeth), and Datari Turner produced. RZA "portrays a character who works the doors at the burlesque club Vanessa dances at. After hours, he secretly uses the club's audio gear to pursue his true passion of music, laying down tracks and rhymes in the new hip hop and rap genres being explored at the time."

In other news, though it was initially announced that Miley Cyrus would be showing her "Tongue Tied" video (made with filmmaker Quentin Jones) at the previously-mentioned, upcoming NYC Porn Festival at Secret Project Robot, the video will not actually be part of it. Why not? NY Post says "The festival's organizer lied when he said Cyrus had personally submitted the film." Huh.

Luckily for those who still want to see the video, you can watch it below. It might not be the safest thing for work, but it's not really any more risqué than her "Wrecking Ball" video that's all over cable TV. Unlike her participation in the "Free the Nipple" campaign, there's no actual nudity.

Meanwhile, the fest otherwise goes down as planned at Brooklyn's Secret Project Robot from February 27 through March 1 and tickets for individual screenings can be purchased at the festival's website. Unlike Miley, musician James Franco will be there, and like Miley, he was nominated for but did not win a Grammy this past weekend.

Azealia Banks almost nude
Azealia Banks

In still more music/porn news, it's been announced that rapper Azealia Banks will pose nude for Playboy. The editors say it's "sure to break the Internet." Kim Kardashian's palms are already sweating. This may be Azealia's first nude photo shoot for mainstream media, but it's not like she hasn't come close before.

And in one last bit of news related (but not to porn) to RZA, his fellow Wu-Tang Clan member GZA is saying he's finally going to release that new album Dark Matter this fall. Ahead of that, he's released a non-album single, "The Mexican" (based on Babe Ruth's 1972 song of the same name) which features Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello on guitar, Hanni El Khatib, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra's Ruban Nielson (whose band just announced a tour). Listen below.

Primavera

The 2015 Primavera Sound Festival goes down in Barcelona, Spain from May 28 - 30. We knew The Strokes and recently reunited shoegazers Ride were playing and now the line-up is being announced via the festival's mobile app, which is a not-so fun 8-bit game you have to play to reveal names. The whole lineup is in the poster above and includes The Replacements, James Blake, Sleater-Kinney (who apparently are playing festivals after all) Patti Smith performing Horses, Spiritualized, Interpol, Antony & the Johnsons, OMD, Mineral, Brand New, Panda Bear, Run the Jewels, Sleaford Mods, Julian Casablancas + The Voidz, The Black Keys, New Pornographers, Jose Gonzalez, Shabazz Palaces, Kevin Morby, Ought, Disappears, Pharmakon, Baxter Dury, Death From Above 1979, Spiritualized, tUnE-yArDs, Twin Shadow, Swans, Iceage, the Juan MacLean, Dan Deacon, Viet Cong, Sun Kil Moon, Antony, Hiss Golden Messenger, Fucked Up, Kelela, Ariel Pink, Voivod, Electric Wizard, Mikal Cronin, alt-J, Sunn O))), the Thurston Moore Band, Underworld (performing dubnobasswithmyheadman), Pallbearer,  Tobias Jesso Jr., American Football, Jon Hopkins, DIIV, Caribou, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, My Brightest Diamond, HEALTH, Babes in Toyland, Thee Oh Sees, Single Mothers, Ex Hex, Shellac and Twerps. Full line-up is below.

That fake poster wasn't too far off. Tickets are on sale now....and apparently traveling to Europe hasn't been this affordable for Americans in a long time.

Desert Daze 2014 - Sunset Ranch Oasis, California
Desert Daze 2014 - Sunset Ranch Oasis, California
Desert Daze 2014 - Sunset Ranch Oasis, California

Speaking of Deap Vally, the female rock duo had a wonderful set filled with dancing, child fans and Moon Block Party members on stage to dance and back them up on vocals. These ladies seemed comfortable in the desert air probably due to the fact that their first show ever was at the desert venue of Pappy and Harriet's. The only real hiccup for Deap Vally was that right as they were getting ready to play, guitarist Lindsey Troy had to use the Porta-Potti and couldn't find her setlist. Otherwise, most band's had smooth sailing, though Autolux started a half hour late due to technical difficulties with its keyboard, resulting in Autolux guitarist Greg Edwards cutting into his wife Raveonettes singer/bassist Sharin Foo's set. - [CMJ]
The Desert Daze festival began in 2012 as an alternative to Coachella but has come into its own since, mixing international acts and California local artists. This was the second year in a row for it to be at Sunset Ranch in Oasis, California and the one-day event (4/26) featured Blonde Redhead, DIIV, The Raveonettes, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Deap Vally, Autolux, Cosmonauts, and many more. Pictures from Desert Daze 2014 are in this post.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra

As mentioned psychedelic rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra are headlining a tour this fall which hits NYC tonight (10/11) at Music Hall of Williamsburg with the Fat Possum-signed Jackson Scott. Tickets for tonight's show are still available, and we're also giving away tickets on Facebook.

They are set to release a new EP titled Blue Record, due out on Jagjaguwar October 29, and as a companion to the expanded version of this year's II. The EP will feature acoustic versions of three tracks from II, in addition to covers of Beck's "Puttin It Down" and Dirty Projectors' "Swing Lo Magellan," the latter of which you can stream below.

Speaking of Dirty Projectors, primary songwriter David Longstreth will be playing The Met on November 1. Tickets to that show are still available.

Updated tour dates are listed, along with the song stream, below...

Wolf People

Wolf People pretty much sound like what their name (and look) implies -- fuzzed-out prog rock, with roots in UK folk. (That's what I imagine at least.) You might think they'd be from Finland, Norway or somewhere people eat lutefisk but they actually hail from Bedford, Britain. Their second album, Fain, came out in April on Jagjaguwar and pulls equally from Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull and Sabbath, and is only lacking in a gatefold sleeve to complete its total 1973ness. You can stream a couple tracks below and listen to the whole magilla via Spotify or Rdio.

The band will be making their first trip to North America next month to open on Unknown Mortal Orchestra's fall tour. They're not playing the NYC date of UMO's tour (10/11 at MHOW) but will have two headlining smaller club shows while here:

Knitting Factory on 10/11 (tickets) and Mercury Lounge on 10/13 with Golden Animals and The Golden Grass (tickets).

All dates are listed, along with streams and a video, below.

Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013
Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013
Lollapalooza Day 2 - 8/3/2013

When last seen, at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park last year, Kendrick Lamar was still a relative unknown except to hip-hop connoisseurs. His set came off as hazy and introspective, with a curious Lady Gaga hanging on every word from the wings. But now he emerges with newfound swagger -- even without Gaga in the house -- smoke machines at his feet and a full band at his back. His 2012 album, "good kid, m.A.A.d. city," puts a new and brilliantly introspective take on West Coast gangsta rap, a look at its tropes and pressures from the inside out. So even as he leads the crowd in some explicit choruses, he throws out questions and lays out his conflicts in the verses. "This will be on the Internet," he announces. Ya think? The audience cheers him like a rock star, even when he stands on stage with arms folded. But he doesn't just bask in the glow. He tries to put it in context, much in the way his rhymes try to make sense of hip-hop and the culture that birthed it. "You can't classify what we got going on," he says to the fans. "This is life." [Chicago Tribune]
Lollapalooza 2013 continued yesterday (8/3) in Chicago's Grant Park, with nicer weather than day 1, and sets from eight stages worth of artists, including The Postal Service, Kendrick Lamar, Haim, Foals, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Local Natives and more. Pictures of those (and other) artists are in this post, and we've got a second set of Saturday pics HERE on the way with more artists. But not any of Death Grips.

We at BrooklynVegan are also at the festival, hosting a portion of the Soundwave Tent.

The festival wraps up today (8/4) (check out our Sunday preview) with sets from Cat Power, Phoenix, The Cure, Beach House, Grizzly Bear, Alt-J, Baroness, Angel Haze, and more. If you're not at the festival, you can stream it live at Lollapalooza.com.

Check out day 1 pics and more day 1 pics.

Update: Day 3 pics (part 1) and day 3 pics (part 2) are up now too.

UMO at South Street Seaport in June (more by Amanda Hatfield)
UMO

Psych revivalists Unknown Mortal Orchestra are non-stop touring this year, and after recently playing a free NYC show at the South Street Seaport, they've added another NYC show to their recently-expanded tour. The newly-added date happens on October 11 at Music Hall of Williamsburg and support comes from the Atlas Sound-like Jackson Scott, whose debut LP, Melbourne, comes out on Fat Possum next week (7/23). Tickets for the MHOW show go on AmEx presale today (7/17) at noon, with a general on-sale beginning Friday (7/19) at noon. Updated dates are listed below.

Jackson Scott will be in NYC sooner than that to open the previously discussed Gauntlet Hair show at Glasslands on August 2, one of Gauntlet Hair's two NYC shows that week. It will be Jackson's first NYC show ever, and Brooklyn noise rockers EULA are on the bill too. Tickets for that show are still available. Jackson Scott's debut album can currently be streamed at Pitchfork and one of its tracks, "Together Forever," can be streamed below.

Meanwhile, UMO's track "So Good At Being In Trouble" from this year's II was just revamped by Black Noi$e with a remix that features Killer Mike and Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire. Stream that remix, along with all lists of tour dates, below...

UMO @ Seaport Music Festival, 6/28/2013
Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ South Street Seaport - 6/28/2013

The 2013 Seaport Music Festival came to a close on Friday (6/28) with its biggest show (and crowd) of the season: Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Bass Drum of Death, who were making the penultimate stop on their tour together. UMO brought their damp Portland hometown weather with them, as it spat rain all evening. It was never enough to really warrant an umbrella (despite a few in the crowd using them), though, and I thought it felt good as muggy as it was on Friday (very).

The show started earlier than usual, as Mississipi's Bass Drum of Death were already into their set when I arrived a little before 7 PM. These guys pretty much stick to rippers live -- a similar style to Ty Segall's poppier side -- and I thought they sounded terrific. I'm more familiar with their debut than this year's self-titled release, so songs like "GB City" and "Heart Attack Kid" from the former stuck with me a little more.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra have been touring for most of this year and are a pretty tight unit. They know their way around a hook, playing the bulk of their catchiest material, like "The Opposite of Afternoon" and "Swim and Sleep" both of which sounded much fuller than their album versions. They also had the pasta pot on full boil, extending the songs with more noodling than is to my personal taste. But that skill came in handy when they came back for an encore performing a killer version of Can's "Vitamin C."

It was a big weekend for the Seaport, as Village Voice's 4Knots Festival was the next day and pictures from that are coming soon. More pics from UMO and BDoD are below.

UMO

As mentioned, Unknown Mortal Orchestra are going on a tour which hits NYC on for a free Seaport Music Festival show on June 28 with tourmates Bass Drum of Death.

That tour kicks off tomorrow in Bellingham Washington and to commemorate their impending trek, UMO have recorded a cover of Otis Redding's classic "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" which was recorded live for BBC 6Music. With their sound already being fairly retro in vibe, the cover is not too far from the original but may help remove any remaining flashbacks to Michael Bolton's version from the '80s. (If you had forgotten it, sorry to bring it up.) You can stream it, along with UMO's recently-expanded tour schedule, below.

Hanni El Khatib
IMAGE

About a month ago San Francisco's Hanni El Khatib released his second album, Head in the Dirt, on Innovative Leisure. The record was produced by the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach and puts an enjoyably pop spin on garage-soul. You can check out the video for new single "Penny" below.

Hanni El Khatib will be touring this fall with Innovative Leisure labelmates Bass Drum of Death, including two stops in NYC: Bowery Ballroom on October 11 and Knitting Factory on October 12. Tickets for Bowery Ballroom on on AmEx presale on Wednesday (6/12) at noon with the general sale on Friday (6/14) at noon. Tickets for Knitting Factory go on sale Friday at 10 AM. All dates are listed below.

Bass Drum of Death, meanwhile, are about to head out on tour with Unknown Mortal Orchestra. When we first mentioned that tour, BDoD weren't billed to open UMO's free NYC show at Seaport Music Festival on June 28, but they've since been added to that. Their tour also includes two headlining NYC shows in July which happen on July 8 at Shea Stadium (tickets) and July 9 at Glasslands (tickets). BDoD's new self-titled sophomore album will be out June 25. You can stream a track from that and check out their updated tour schedule below.

Bass Drum of Death at Austin Psych Fest 2013 (more by Tim Griffin)
Bass Drum of Death

Garage rock duo Bass Drum of Death (who are a trio live) are wrapping up a tour with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in DC tonight (5/6) that brought both bands to Austin Psych Fest and NYC for a Terminal 5 show this past Saturday (5/4). BDOD also played their own show that night in a more DIY venue, Death by Audio. If you missed that show, or just can't get enough Bass Drum of Death, you're in luck because the band have already announced they'll be returning to Brooklyn in July for two more shows in similar spaces. The first is an all ages show on July 8 at Shea Stadium and the second is a 21+ show on July 9 at Glasslands. Tickets to see them at Shea and at Glasslands are on sale now.

Those shows are about a week after BDOD opens for Unknown Mortal Orchestra at The Space (6/29) in CT (tickets). And that CT show is one day after UMO play a free NYC show at Pier 17 at South Street Seaport (6/28).

We also just mentioned that BDOD are featured on Adult Swim's free Garage Swim compilation with a bunch of other like-minded bands like Thee Oh Sees, King Tuff & Gap Dream, Mikal Cronin, and more. You can stream their contribution, "Dregs," along with a list of all upcoming dates, below...

BV Day Party @ The Main & Jr, March 16th, 2013

We wrapped up our stay at The Main and The Jr (aka old Emo's) with our fourth and final BrooklynVegan SXSW day party on Saturday (3/16). Unfortunately, Foxygen had to drop off at the last minute because the singer lost his voice. They would have played the outdoor stage (Pianos Stage), where we still saw sets from the arty synthpop of Empress Of, the loudest set of all of our day parties from A Place to Bury Strangers, and a super fun set from catchy UK rockers Palma Violets. Then came the sexy R&B of Autre Ne Veut, followed by a set by Austra, who were previewing expansive material from their upcoming sophomore album, Olympia. Then finally, the outdoor stage was wrapped up with a set from psychedelic pop New Zealanders Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Inside, the show kicked off with the catchy indie pop of TEEN, followed by rockin' UK band Peace, and then three consecutive synthpop groups, Feathers, MS MR, and Doldrums. Then the show took a louder turn with an adrenaline-pumping set from White Lung, bouncy young garage punks The Orwells, and finally King Tuff.

In addition to the music, we had an interactive photo and video booth set up by Oxygen tattoo show, "Best Ink". The second season (hosted by Pete Wentz who made a surprise appearance in their booth) premieres April 3rd. Onkyo was there, sampling their new headphones which hit stores next month. mophie maker of invaluable iPhone chargers, were giving away discount cards good at their pop-up shop which was set up right across the street on Red River. We were also serving complimentary Jameson, and Zico coconut water, and free vegan queso and chips from Food For Lovers. We also had BrooklynVegan t-shirts for the first 50 people in the door, thanks to American Apparel. Also thanks to our other sponsors, Korg, Vox, Blackstar, Creative Recreation, Signazon, Zazoo, and Redigi.

Earl Sweatshirt
Earl Sweatshirt

Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt will be making his SXSW debut this year (he wasn't there when the rest of his crew first played), and will be doing collaborative sets with Captain Murphy, aka Flying Lotus' rap alter ego (who collaborated with him on "Between Friends"). Those sets include the Life or Death showcase on Wednesday (3/13) at Scoot Inn at midnight, the Green Label Sound showcase on Friday (3/15) at Lucille at 9:30 PM, and FADER Fort on Saturday (3/16) at 6 PM. Flyers for all three of those shows with full lineups are below.

Earl just appeared at Flying Lotus' LA show at Low End Theory last week (3/7) and they performed three tracks off Earl's upcoming album, Doris, "Burgundy" (produced by Pharrell), "Hive," and "Guild." Mac Miller is featured on that last one and he was at the LA show too. You can check it all out in a video from the show, which is below. Also below is the video for previously released Doris track, "Chum," and Earl has another new video on the way too.

Earl's other upcoming dates include some festival appearances like Bonnaroo, Sasquatch!, and Coachella. All dates are listed, along with those flyers and videos, below...
