stamps

PETA just released a new set of limited edition stamps featuring famous vegetarians, and a bevy of musicians and music industry folks are included on the sheet amongst the likes of Bob Barker and Joaquin Phoenix (though the list two years ago was a bit more interesting with Leonardo da Vinci, Johnny Appleseed who I wasn't aware he was actually a person and Gandhi). Paul McCartney, Ricky Martin, Russell Simmons, Joan Jett, Sarah Silverman, Vivienne Westwood, Mayim Bialik, Edie Falco, Belinda Carlisle and, of course, Morrissey made the cut. Would Grimes use these stamps? (she probably won't be featured on one)

As Morrisey says,

I think animals look to humans for protection, and of course humans lead them into slaughterhouses, which to me is just like an image of leading children into a slaughterhouse. There's no difference.
And some words of wisdom from Sir Paul McCartney:
If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. It's staggering when you think about it. Vegetarianism takes care of so many things in one shot: ecology, famine, cruelty.
You can order the stamps over at PETA, and be sure to use the Joan Jett ones for all your letters to South Dakota.

Speaking of Morrissey, a new book aiming to catalogue Smiths tattoos is in the work, and they're looking for anyone with a Smiths or Morrissey tattoo to be a part of it. Here are deets on that:

"To Me You Are A Work of Art" is a photo project in search of anyone with tattoo(s) related to, or inspired by, Morrissey and/or The Smiths. The photographs will profile fans and all their tattoos from various cities across the country over the course of the next few months. All photos will be taken by Toronto based photographer Patrick Moore.
The New York City date is this upcoming Sunday, November 24th and will be held at the Rocks Off offices in the Lower East Side (195 Chrystie St #401B) between 2pm and 4pm.

In Ricky Martin news, RM just listed his East Village condo in that really cool turquoise building on Bond Street for $6.8 million, and he just had his first book published, a children's book called "Santiago the Dreamer in 'Land Among the Stars.'" It's good to be Ricky Martin.

Joan Jett at Cherie Currie's recent Long Island show (more by Greg Cristman)
Joan Jett

Joan Jett was supposed to appear with her band on the South Dakota tourism float in its Thanksgiving Day parade, has been moved off the float after South Dakota ranchers and farmers protested about her becoming vegetarian and animal rights advocate, saying it misrepresents their state. CNN reports...

"I've decided to switch from South Dakota to another float because people's political agendas were getting in the way of what should be a purely entertainment driven event," Jett said in a statement Saturday. "I will remain focused on entertaining the millions of people watching, who will be celebrating a great American tradition."

...

"So, of course, when we learned that about Miss Jett, we were rightly concerned about her representing South Dakota and a state that is so heavily reliant on agriculture and livestock production to drive our economy," Jodie Anderson of the South Dakota Cattlemen's Association told the station.

A Macy's spokesman said Jett and her Blackhearts band will be moved to another float, and another undetermined performer will take Jett's place on the South Dakota float, the affiliate said.

...

"Thanks to South Dakota's reactionary ranchers, people across the country have learned why Joan Jett supports PETA. The meat trade can't stand any scrutiny of its cruelty," PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews said in a statement.

Sharon Jones will perform at the parade too.

Now vegetarians, sick of the same old Tofurkey, can be food perverts on Thanksgiving too. Watch and learn how to make a Veggieducken below...

Paul Mccartney

Speaking of the Beatles, Paul McCartney appears in the new Peta ad you see above. Peta in turn has published a list of alternative Thanksgiving recipes.

Morrissey

In an interview with Herald Sun (via FACT), Morrissey claims that Coachella offered to go "100% vegetarian" if he would reunite with Johnny Marr and headline the festival as The Smiths:

At Coachella a few years you complained about the waft of burning flesh from a nearby barbeque. Has that been a problem since at outdoor shows?

Not at all, and interestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100-per-cent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths. Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would 'not require' the Smiths' bass player or drummer ... which I thought certainly said something.

The Moz always has to get in a little barb at Smiths rhythm section Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke, doesn't he? For more on the Smiths, you can pick up the October issue of MOJO which details the band's formation. And of course Morrissey will be in NYC next week for three sold out shows on his upcoming tour.

Juliette Lewis
Juliette Lewis

"Friday night's show at the Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford was not just an exercise in nostalgia as playing songs from "Concrete" was Hynde's main objective. Eight of the night's 20 songs were from the new disc and Hynde was far from worried about disappointing the fans that came just for the classic cuts.

"We're going to be throwing some new songs at you," she said early in the set. "I hope you like them; if not, tough." [CT Post]

The Pretenders, Cat Power and Juliette Lewis (she dropped "the Licks) are on tour. That review comes from Friday's CT show. Since then they played the Stone Pony Summerstage in NJ, and last night (8/10) they played an outdoor, meat-free show at Central Park Summerstage in hot and humid NYC. More pictures from that show, and the CT setlist, below....

The Pretenders

"Fans going to the two New York metropolitan area Pretenders concerts -- August 9 at the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, NJ [last night], and August 10 at the Central Park SummerStage in New York, NY [tonight] -- might want to [save their appetites] before they enter the venues.

Concert promoter Live Nation is supporting Chrissie Hynde's vegetarian initiatives by removing all meat products from the venues, as well as providing a special vegetarian BBQ for radio contest winners at the Central Park show. Hynde is a longtime and well-known vegetarian and PETA activist." [TicketNews]

Cat Power and Juliette Lewis are also on the bill.
