Governors Ball is less than a month away, and the fest has now released the daily schedule. They've done a pretty good job with not too many giant conflicts -- though there's a few like Grizzly Bear vs Beirut, Bloc Party vs The xx, Erykah Badu vs Beach House, and Nas vs Guns N Roses. Check out the daily line-ups across their four stages below.

Wild Nothing have a new EP, Empty Estate, on the way, which will be out May 14 on Captured Tracks. That's the cover art above. Recorded in NYC back in January, the record is pretty different than anything Jack Tatum has done before, with a warbly postpunk/synthpop vibe, like what might have been released by Ze Records in 1979. Here's what Tatum says about it:

This is a record that happened very fast for me. We had just gotten back from a particularly long European tour last November, our first supporting Nocturne, and I was feeling a lot of things. I found myself struggling with what it meant to be a musician, with what music in general meant to me and what part I could possibly play in it. Playing the same songs every night for months left me bored with myself. But when I got home, for the first time in awhile it suddenly seemed that the pressure was off. We didn't have any tours planned for several months and I started to remember again why I love music in the first place. I listened to Brian Eno and David Bowie for weeks on end and felt like I was hearing them for the first time. I took a trip to Miami with my girlfriend. I visited my family. I felt free to try things musically that I would have stifled before. The songs on this EP were recorded over a 10 day period and are a reflection of this time. Of all the frustrations and successes and moments of peace in between.
The first single from Empty Estates is "A Dancing Shell" which you can stream and check out the animated video of below. Pre-orders are being taken for a deluxe version of the record that comes in some fancy packaging which you can check out below.

Look for Wild Nothing on tour later this year, including NYC shows at Governors Ball in June and opening for Father John Misty at Terminal 5 on July 24. Tickets for that T5 show go on AmEx presale on Wednesday (4/26) at noon with the regular on-sale happening Friday (4/26) at noon. All Wild Nothing tour dates are below.

Father John Misty at Coachella 2013 weekend 1 (more by Dana (distortion) Yavin)
Father John Misty

We knew that Father John Misty was quickly moving up in the world, but after his sold out Webster Hall show, he decided to scale things back a bit by announcing a tour with Adam Green & Binki Shapiro and Jessica Pratt (Adam Green & Binki Shapiro dropped off) which brings him back to the NYC-area for a more intimate show on May 17 at Maxwell's, the day before FJM plays The Great GoogaMooga in Prospect Park. Not surprisingly, that show is long sold out (and so is GoogaMooga), but Father John Misty has expanded his tour to include his largest headlining show in NYC yet, Terminal 5 on July 24. Dream poppers Wild Nothing will be providing support at the show. Tickets for that one go on sale Friday (4/26) at noon with an AmEx presale starting Wednesday (4/24) at noon.

Updated dates are listed, along with some videos of Father John Misty's set at Coachella yesterday (4/21), below...

every year between Christmas and New Year's, we catch up on unposted stuff. This year is no different...

Grimes

As you might remember, Grimes headlined a big free outdoor Hudson Park River Rocks show over the summer at Pier 84 with support from Captured Tracks indie rockers Wild Nothing and DIIV. We already posted a set of pictures from that show back in August after the show happened, and we've got a second belated set of pics that are in this post.

Grimes had a pretty amazing year this year (love it or hate it), making a huge leap from being relatively underground to becoming one of the most talked about indie pop successes of the year. We blogged about her a lot, everyone blogged about her a lot, she made a ton of year end lists, and had one of the biggest indie pop songs of the year with "Oblivion" (Pitchfork's number 1 track). Grimes also gave us her own year-end list which included things like Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, and Swans.

More pics from the Pier 84 show below...

Tom Blankenship

"My Morning Jacket was formed in 1998 in Louisville, Kentucky by singer, songwriter and guitarist Jim James (real name: James Olliges Jr). The original line-up also included three members of the Shelbyville emo-punk band Winter Death Club; namely John McQuade (later known as Johnny Quaid - guitar and vocals), Tom Blankenship (later known as Two Tone Tommy - bass) and J. Roberts (later known as J. Glenn - drums)." [Wikipedia]
My Morning Jacket will stay busy this holiday season, with three shows at Port Chester's Capitol Theatre (tickets) that lead up to a New Year's Eve show in Boston, and then the Hurricane Sandy relief benefit at Asbury Park's Paramount Theatre on January 2 (tickets), a show that's hosted by Matt Pinfield and also features Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Joseph Arthur, Nicole Atkins, River City Extension, Tangiers Blues Band and "special guests."

MMJ bassist Tom Blankenship (who also recently helped out with Brooklyn Rock Lottery) gave us his list of Top 10 LPs of 2012. While it includes year-end list mainstays Frank Ocean and Alt-J, there are some surprises as well. You can check out his year-end picks below.

DOWNLOAD: Ex Cops - Wonderful Christmas Time (MP3)

Ex Cops

Admission. Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" is easily my most-hated holiday pop song. Repetive, grating, plodding, and seemingly recorded by accident, the song makes me want to suck a candycane into a point and gouge out my eardrums. (Unlike, say, The Waitresses' "Christmas Wrapping" which I can listen to ad infinitum.) So it's a Christmas miracle that Ex Cops have taken this unfortunate Macca yuletide perennial and sped it up, turned it up and transformed it into a rough-hewn little indiepop charmer. We've got the premiere of the song right here in the post to download above or stream below. Merry Ex-mas.

Another present you're going to have to wait a bit for is Ex Cops terrific debut album, True Hallucinations, which hits January 22 via Other Music Recording Company. The band are playing a record release show at Glasslands that same day with Hunters also on the bill (tickets). After that, Ex Cops play Mercury Lounge on February 15 and tickets to that show are on sale at noon. You can see them sooner than that, though, as they were just added to tonight's Paul Banks show at Webster Hall (12/14) and tickets are still available.

Meanwhile Ex Cops' Brian Harding and Amalie Bruun have each submitted lists of their favorite songs from 2012. In a bit of daring, they both include their own single "You Are a Lion, I Am a Lamb" on their respective lists. Check them out below.

Question Mark

Not a lot of big acts at CMJ this year. Bowery Ballroom still has one night empty, and their Saturday night was just filled with the announcement that Wild Nothing is playing there twice (Saturday with Braids and Sunday with Merchandise). But now comes a last minute announcement that the Wednesday night of CMJ will be headlined by "Special Surprise Guest". SKATERS, San Cisco, Pacific Air, and Solid Gold open the show which goes on sale Wednesday at noon. Would you buy a ticket to a show if you didn't know who was playing?

Braids at ATP NYC 2012 (more by Luiz Ruiz)
Braids

Montreal's Braids were just in NYC for ATP and while they were in the area, the closest club date they played was at Hoboken's Maxwell's a few days before ATP. Now they'll be returning to NYC during CMJ for a free, and far more intimate than ATP, show at Pianos on October 17 for the Tell All Your Friends day party. The show starts at noon and Braids are on at 6 PM. Other bands playing including Maus Haus, Blackbird Blackbird, Team Spirit, Solid Gold, Filligar, Triple Hex, Zulu Pearls, and still more. You can see the full list of artists and more details in the flier below. This show is the only announced date for Braids at the moment.

UPDATE: Braids also play a larger CMJ show at Bowery Ballroom on October 20 with Wild Nothing (more of their dates HERE and HERE), Weekend, and Forma. Tickets to that show go on sale Wednesday (10/10) at noon.

In related news, Raphaelle of Braids' other band, Blue Hawaii will be playing some CMJ shows too, including the Sam Mickens CMJ party at Bowery Electric on October 18 with Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders, TOPS, and ZZZ's. It doesn't look like Sam Mickens is actually playing the show (he's been doing some booking for the venue lately), but you'll have a few chances to catch him playing in NYC this month and next.

After that show, Blue Hawaii will play the M for Montreal showcase at Arlene's Grocery on October 19 with Doldrums, Mozart's Sister, Absolutely Free, Royal Canoe, Plaster, Ariane Mofatt, and TOPS, and the POP Montreal day party at Cameo on October 20 with Goose Hut, Mozart's Sister, Solar Year, Valleys, C T Z N S H P.

Blue Hawaii also play the Arbutus Records Showcase at Death by Audio on October 20 with Doldrums, TOPS, Majical Cloudz, and Eola. As you may know, Arbutus is the label that Grimes was on before signing to 4AD. All the bands playing that DbA show are featured on a mix Arbutus made for CMJ which we're premiering in this post. Check it out, along with its tracklist, below.

As mentioned, Blue Hawaii will open for her in NYC at Bowery Ballroom on October 27 with Myths. Majical Cloudz, who are also on the Arbutus showcase and featured on Grimes' album, will open her show at Music Hall of Williamsburg (10/28) with Elite Gymnastics. All of Grimes' upcoming NYC shows are sold out.

The Braids flier, Arbutus CMJ mix, a song stream, and a list of all Blue Hawaii dates are below.

CMJ

KEXP is always good for some intimate & live-broadcasted CMJ performances, and this year is no different, except for the venue:

CMJ Union | 27 Union Square West | New York, NY

CMJ presents its own venue and social hub as part of CMJ Music Marathon 2012. CMJ Union is a bustling meeting point designed to bring together the festival's many different strands, providing space for badgeholders to mingle with press, panelists and artists. It's a place where ideas and information can be exchanged through exclusive mixers and parties, where guests can experience artist performances broadcast live by KEXP, and where tips on where to go and who to see ping back and forth across the room.

KEXP LIVE BROADCAST

As part of the festivities at CMJ Union, CMJ and Seattle radio station KEXP have teamed up for an exclusive broadcast event. KEXP returns to the festival to host a live transmission. KEXP DJ's John Richards and Cheryl Waters will spin in between sets.

All KEXP events are free and open to the public. Only non-CMJ badgeholders are required to RSVP, though RSVP does not guarantee entry. All entry will be on a first come, first serve basis. 18+ only. Check out the schedule below...

Wild Nothing at Pier 84 in August (more by Amanda Hatfield)
Wild Nothing

Captured Tracks labelmates Wild Nothing and DIIV are currently wrapping up their tour together, which kicked off about a month after both bands supported Grimes (who plays Basilica tonight) at her River Rocks show. Upon returning home, as mentioned, DIIV will be headlining the Captured Tracks CMJ showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 18 with Mac DeMarco, Thieves Like Us, and Dignan Porch (tickets).

Wild Nothing isn't on that show, but they'll play their own NYC show just after CMJ ends at Bowery Ballroom on October 21. Like he's doing at DIIV's MHOW show, Captured Tracks glam star Mac DeMarco will open this show, as will killer Tampa post-punks Merchandise, who just played three NYC shows. The show was just announced at noon and tickets went right on sale. All Wild Nothing dates are listed below.

Naomi Punk
Naomi Punk

Speaking of Captured Tracks, the label just signed Olympia, WA trio Naomi Punk, who shared a bill with Nude Beach in NYC last month. The label will re-release their debut LP, The Feeling, digitally on October 16 and physically on November 20. You can download that album's single, "Burned Body," above or watch its video below.

That video and an updated list of Wild Nothing dates are below.

Baroness at Terminal 5 in May (more by Joe McCabe)
Baroness

Earlier this week, we posted an update from Baroness showing that things were looking upwards for the band. Unfortunately though, with two members having broken vertebrae and frontman John Baizely having a broken arm and leg, it doesn't come as much of a surprise that Baroness have in fact cancelled some of their upcoming North American tour dates, including their NYC show at House of Vans and LA's FYF Fest. They will not be replaced on the House of Vans lineup, which happens on August 29 and now just includes Turbonegro, Doomriders, and Nightbirds. This is a bummer but it makes sense that the band takes the time they need to recover, and we wish them a speedy and successful recovery!

Meanwhile, FYF Fest, which Wild Flag also dropped off of, recently expanded its lineup. It now features The Faint (who just announced they'll be reissuing Danse Macabre and touring the album), Glass Candy, King Tuff, and newcomers The Orwells. Tickets for FYF Fest are still available. The updated lineup and flier are below.

Grimes at River Rocks 8/09/2012
Grimes

The weather forecast was gloomy, with thunderstorms predicted for 8 PM but the winds were with the 5000+ folk who showed up to Pier 84 for the final 2012 River Rocks show with Grimes, Wild Nothing and DIIV, the final Hudson Park River Rocks show of 2012. While the rain stayed away, the air was thick with humidity which just added to the sweaty nature of the show.

Grimes has certainly come a long way in the last two years and though she still has a nervous, conversational rapport on stage, she has become a confident performer. Flanked by two dancers and armed with bubble machines, Claire Boucher had the masses dancing (and shrieking) for a good hour. She came back for an encore, playing a brand new, "not finished" track that the audience ate up like it was "Oblivion." They really did not want her to stop or leave the stage.

Grimes will be back in October for four sold out shows at Bowery Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg. All Grimes dates are listed below.

The other acts of the night were of the indie rock (Captured Tracks division) variety, with Wild Nothing and DIIV. Wild Nothing played much of their new album, Nocturne, and had it for sale at the merch table, two weeks early. Setlist is in a picture below. They sounded terrific and have also come a long way and move around much more on stage.

Nobody moves more than DIIV, though. The indefatigable band never stop and put on another good set last night. This was the first date of their and Wild Nothing's tour together and all upcoming dates are listed at the bottom of this post.

Pictures, videos and setlists from last night, plus listed tour dates, are below.
