Youth of Today at Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 (more by Keith Marlowe)

Ray Cappo, 46, one of [Revelation Records'] founders, took his place on the stage as the singer for the band Youth of Today, and shouted at the mosh pit, "It's been 20 years but the message is still the same: Tear down the waaaalllll."The New York Times piece details "heavy metal rocker" Raghunath's (aka Ray Cappo's) journey upstate and his career as an "anti-gravity" yoga instructor. Check out his site for more information on attending a class, in person or online....Raghunath left rock in a search for a personal true north... He found comfort in studying ancient yogi texts, meditation, chanting and long stints at an ashram in India. "My passion is how to apply ancient philosophy in the modern world," he said. "I teach a fun class so people come. A strong acrobatic class is the best way to get New York type-A personalities on the mat, and then the class is peppered with song and chanting and philosophy and ancient sacred texts."
The classes, playfully dubbed Flight School, developed name recognition among yogis -- especially fellow teachers -- and they can credit or blame Raghunath's influence with the grade inflation on the mat these days, where open-level classes integrate a crow pose, or what children call frog, transitioning into handstands.... [NY Times]
Check out more pictures from Youth of Today's appearance at Fun Fun Fun Fest HERE and HERE. The band will play the Chicago edition of Revelation 25 in early January. They played the NYC one, which the NY Times refers to in the article, in October at Irving Plaza.
YACHTat South Street Seaport, August 2010 (more by Chris La Putt)

YACHT will take part in an interesting event on August 31st at Body Actualized Center (143 Troutman in Bushwick):
Falling Into the Sun is an evening of heliocentric film, yoga, and experience.Claire Evans of Yacht commented on the event:Curated by Claire L. Evans, science writer and one-half of the conceptual pop group YACHT, Falling into the Sun is an aesthetic and corporeal experience pairing experimental films tracing the arc of the sun and its light across the Earth with a course of yogic sun salutations in order to fully immerse participants in the sensation of being pulled to the center of our solar system.
Come prepared to move ecstatically and celebrate the end of our hemisphere's summer!
"I've curated an experiential heliocentric film screening to which YACHT will play a live score. If you bring your body and mind in equal measure we'll do sun salutations to experimental visions of the sun's light as it traces across the sky. There will also be healing, meditation, cosmic DJs, projection mapping, installations, and a late-night afterparty that will follow the sun into the morning. Let's get weird!"Full details on the event which also includes performances from Bobby Birdman, Seabat, DJ Jan Woo, DJ Jay Simon, and Bookworms are below, and you can pick up your tickets now (as of today) and only in person at Body Actualized Center. The show is the day after YACHT's appearance at the Beekman Beer Garden (8/30, tickets).
All tour dates and details on the "Falling Into The Sun" event are below.

Javelina @ the Northside BV-BBG Showcase (more by Jason Walker)

Alright! I get it. Doomriders rules. Revocation is up there. There's a new Converge and Baroness on the way. But even with all of those great releases, it suprises me that Javelina isn't near some of the top of those lists. The band's filthy debut was a monster and their new one, Beasts Among Sheep, only adds to their considerable reputation. If you are a fan of the last LP, this one is a must have. Dig on "Stepchild" above and preorder the limited edition LP version of Javelina's Beasts Among Sheep via Brutal Panda Records and the CD version via Translation Loss.
Speaking of that Doomriders album, Darkness Come Alive is out NOW via Deathwish Records. Though the party vibe that permeated through Black Thunder is mostly gone, it has been replaced by a propulsive punk rock fury and, at times, a Misfits-era Danzig croon (see "Come Alive")! There are quite a few killer moments on this long-player, but we present to you the most "fuck you" of them all, the galloping "Lions" downloadable above!
In our last round up, we shined a light on into the deepest fathoms of Australia and the truly frightening Portal. The band's claustrophobic and positively frightening new death metal LP, Swarth, relies as much on freak-out atmosphere as it does killer discordant riffery. Swarth is due out on 10/20 via Profound Lore and we have a second taste in the form of "Omenknow" above.
Misery Index have completed four new songs and are looking to enter the studio in early 2010 to record their follow up to Traitors! Stoked.
Iron Age @ Cake Shop (more by Jason Walker)

I still remember that kick ass Cake Shop show with Iron Age, Mind Eraser, and Sex Vid, and walking out of that show wanting more. Thankfully, I can add to those great memories with a PAIR of Iron Age shows in the coming weeks! First up, the rowdy Texans will team up with the great Mother of Mercy (profiled here) for a show at Cake Shop (10/16). The next day (10/17), look for the band to pull a double header with a day show at Generation Records and a night show at The Charleston with Brain Killer, Naam & Descender. Speaking of Mind Eraser, the band will team up with the kick ass Iron Lung for a string of east coast dates which will include Cake Shop on 11/8! Full Iron Age and Iron Lung dates are below.
Black Skies will release the limited edition vinyl from their 2008 EP Hexagon on I'm Better Than Everyone Else Records. The Chapel Hill doom trio is currently on the hunt for drummer #5, but not before blessing us with some seriously killer riffage in the form of "Smoke & Mirrors" above. Preorder Hexagon here.
Power Pellut is also releasing their debut LP via I'm Better than Everyone Else Records. Preorder that here and dig on "Black Betty" from that LP above!
Church of Misery will release a live record culled from their recent set at Roadburn 2009! More details are to come, but look for Burning World to do the honors in November/December of this year. In the meantime, dig on this killer live video from Roadburn 2009!
That video, news on Kowloon Walled City, Boris, Asphyx, Struck By Lightning, Ringworm, Repulsion and more!
Kaki King @ BAM 2/7/09 (more by Natasha Ryan)

Steven Patrick Morrissey is turning 50 on May 22nd. Morrissey himself will be celebrating with a concert in his hometown of Manchester.
Others will be celebrating, that same night, right here in Brooklyn at Glasslands Gallery where Kaki King will play a "special set" at a Morrissey birthday celebration. Beta Beta, the Bodgea Girls and the Stationary Set are also on the bill. Flyer below.
This summer, King will be at Bonnaroo on June 12th and Northern California's music & yoga festival, Wanderlust, on Saturday, July 25th. The lineup for that fest includes Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Jenny Lewis, Amanda Palmer, Spoon, Broken Social Scene...and many more big "indie" names. The festival also offers yoga sessions with a full schedule of guest yogis. Both music+yoga tickets and music-only tickets go on sale Tuesday, May 12th.
Kaki King's newest record is her Mexican Teenagers EP, released March 30th by Cooking Vinyl.
Full details of both Morrissey's b-day and Wanderlust Festival, with posters, and Kaki King dates, below...
