Happy New Year

The 121st edition of the beloved New Year’s Day tradition brought thousands to the beach and boardwalk.

Temperatures reached the 50s, but it was still very chilly in the water.

It’s the first Sunday Lunch of 2023.

Saturday was mild, with temperatures in the 50’s, but there was some light rain to contend with, and hundreds of people, in costumes, bathing suits, or their clothes, turned out to take a dip in the Atlantic, or cheer on the swimmers

2020 got off to a chilly start in Coney Island on a brisk, windy day with temperatures in the upper 30s and low 40s, but that didn’t deter hundreds from participating in the 116th annual New Years Day Polar Bear Plunge.

After a frigid New Years Day in 2018, where temperatures in Coney Island topped out around 17 degrees Fahrenheit, January 1, 2019 was balmy by comparison. Temperatures rose to the mid-50s, and attendance of the 2019 Coney Island Polar Bear Plunge reflected the relative warmth, with around 2500 people going for a swim in the Atlantic on Tuesday afternoon.

2018 got off to a very cold start in Coney Island, with temperatures topping out around 17 degrees Fahrenheit. The cold didn’t deter the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, who attracted hundreds to their annual New Year’s Day plunge, wearing costumes, bathing suits, and their clothes, to take a dip into the frigid Atlantic.
