This edition of In Defense of the Genre looks at 20 bands from the mainstream pop punk era paying tribute to the comparatively underground legends who influenced them, through the lens of cover songs that still sound great today.

‘The Big Coloring Book of First Avenue’ includes pages on Twin Cities artists Prince, Hüsker Dü, Lizzo, The Replacements, Atmosphere, and more.

It’s the title track of Craig’s upcoming compilation, which features songs from the sessions of his last three solo albums that ”didn’t fit the theme or the flow of the record they were recorded for.”

The heart of the 4-CD, 1 LP limited edition set is Matt Wallace’s original, unreleased mix of ’Don’t Tell A Soul,’ that adds back that messy Replacements spirit that was glossed away in the original.

This new mix of ‘Don’t Tell a Soul’ restores “original drums tracks, vocal takes and tempos that were altered in post-production.” This version of “Talent Show” sounds more like The Replacements.

”While it’s impossible to unhear a record that’s been around for three decades, this version, ’Don’t Tell A Soul Redux,’ is the album the band made and intended to release.” – Replacements biographer Bob Mehr.

The Replacements have been teasing some news, and now Amazon UK lists a box set titled ’Dead Man’s Pop’ that is alternate mixes and outtakes from 1989’s ’Don’t Tell a Soul,’ including an infamous 1988 session with Tom Waits.
