Gone Is Gone (Mastodon/ATDI/QOTSA) release new song "Starlight"

While “Violescent” has a good dose of Mastodon’s sludge, “Starlight” is closer to atmospheric alternative rock.

Earlier this month (5/13-15), Atlanta’s fourth annual Shaky Knees music festival went down at Centennial Olympic Park. Headliners included Jane’s Addiction performing 1990’s Ritual de lo habitual in full, the 1975, My Morning Jacket, Florence + the Machine and the reunited At the Drive In.

Gone is Gone (Mastodon, ATDI, QOTSA) share "Violescent," detail debut EP

The new track “Violescent” is a crunchy, groovy sludge metal piece with a melodic bent that actually sounds like a convincing hybrid of the three famous bands whose members constitute this thing. Hajjar’s drumming is somehow driving and stuttering at the same time, Van Leeuwen’s guitar playing has the sleazy edge of the later QOTSA albums that he contributed to, and Sanders’ meaty vocals lend the howling, seething quality of some of Mastodon’s better work…

In addition to sitting behind the throne for the At the Drive-In reunion, ATDI drummer Tony Hajjar is now manning the skins for a new band called Gone Is Gone with a very impressive lineup that includes Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and Queens of the Stone Age guitarist Troy Van Leeuwe. There’s also guitarist Mike Zarin, who worked with Van Leeuwen on the new Sweethead album…
