(You may remember that they started playing Wall of Eyes songs live on the A Light for Attracting Attention tour too.) As Stereogum points out, they’ve played a new six-minute song called “Don’t Get Me Started” at three UK shows this past week, and fan-shot videos have surfaced. Judging by this footage, the song is on The Smile’s moody, atmospheric side, and it sounds pretty great. Check out videos below.

Meanwhile, as Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood remain busy with The Smile, their Radiohead bandmates Ed O’Brien and Philip Selway are also working on something together. Ed’s working on a new EOB album, and he revealed yesterday that Phil came by the studio to play on “a couple of songs.” “Just so good to hear you play on these songs,” Ed wrote, “the most soulful of drummers .. and so thankful for our old and deep friendship … as Sister Sledge once sang, We are family.” Philip replied, “Wonderful music and company. Beautiful day!”

Indie Basement (1/26): the week in classic indie, college rock and more https://www.brooklynvegan.com/album-reviews-ty-segall-the-smile-gruff-rhys-the-umbrellas-finnoguns-wake-vanishing-twin/ Fri, 26 Jan 2024 16:00:59 +0000 https://www.brooklynvegan.com/?p=612536 This is more like it. At least as far as Indie Basement is concerned, this is the first big week of releases for 2024 (i realize there have only been four Fridays), with four albums out this week that I recommend. Those are by Ty Segall, The Smile, Gruff Rhys and The Umbrellas. To go along with those we also have terrific EPs from Finnoguns Wake (the new band from Shogun of Royal Headache) and Vanishing Twin. That is a complete breakfast (and dinner) right there.

Over in Notable Releases, Andrew also gives The Smile a spin, along with new records from Alkaline Trio, Benny the Butcher, Torres, and more.

This was another huge weeks for announcements, including new albums from Arab Strap, Klaus Johann Grobe, Fat White Family, Liam Gallagher & John Squire, Elbow, Shannon & The Clams, The Reds Pinks & Purples, Corridor, and Melts; and tour announcements from CSS (first US tour in a decade) and Lush’s Miki Berenyi and Lol Tolhurst x Budgie. Plus: Matador is reissuing Butthole Surfers albums.

Head below for this week’s reviews…

Ty Segall - Three Bells

Ty Segall – Three Bells (Drag City)
The 15th solo album from this psych-rock wunderkind keeps his hot streak going

Ty Segall has said that he’s consciously trying to take his foot off the gas a little when it comes to his output, which in the past has seen multiple albums a year from a variety of projects, from solo to Fuzz, GOGGS and beyond. Three Bells is the pysch-rock multi-instrumentalist wunderkind’s 15th album under his own name in just about as many years, and is his first since 2022’s acoustic “Hello, Hi.” But it’s also a 65-minute double album, so in some ways he’s keeping up his prolific reputation. Quality control is definitely pretty high here, and the vibe is a mix of the gleaming synthetic perfection of Harmonizer, the boundary-stretching of First Taste, and the gonzo energy of Freedom’s Goblin (also a double LP), along with a few new moves. Ty experimented with using the same chord shapes across multiple songs, and that gives the album a subconscious cohesiveness without ever feeling samey, whether it’s outer space jams (“Void”), proggy proto-metal grooves (“Hi Dee Dee”) or hooky pop songs (“In My Room”). He also co-wrote a third of the album with his wife, Denée, which brings new melodic and lyrical elements to the table. (She contributed to Harmonizer as well, and together they make music as The C.I.A.) Three Bells has the creative boundary-pushing you associate with a double, but manages to go down like a tight, single-LP. It’s also clear this wasn’t two albums worth of songs randomly collected on one. Ty shouldn’t worry about oversaturating the market with records, especially with the hit-rate consistency he’s maintained.

gruff rhys - sadness set me free album cover

Gruff Rhys – Sadness Sets Me Free (Rough Trade)
The 25th album from Rhys is one of this most personal, quietest and unique

Sadness Sets Me Free is the 25th album that Gruff Rhys made, when counting solo works, records with Super Furry Animals, Neon Neon, soundtracks and more.  For this one, Gruff and his band — Osian Gwynedd (piano), Huw V Williams (double bass) and Kliph Scurlock (drums) — recorded the majority of it in a three-day session in Paris in March 2022, with strings and backing vocals by This is the Kit‘s Kate Stables added later. “At this point I quite like working with serendipity,” Rhys says of the album. “Not in a cosmic way, [but] I try and leave things open to chance encounters and chance geography…I’m always looking for ways to make a different-sounding record.” Sadness Sets Me Free is one of Rhys’ prettiest, most melancholic records, heavy on acoustic guitar, piano and strings, with a strong element of both ’70s country and tropicalia. Gruff is one of those rare artists who consistently manages to do something new every time while only ever sounding like himself. The way he writes songs, the chords and melodies he favors, haven’t really changed over the years — this album’s “Celestial Candyfloss” could’ve fit, with a different arrangement, on SFA’s 1996 debut, and “Silver Linings (Lead Balloon)” could be a cousin to “Northern Lights” from 1999’s Guerilla. Yet both feel like they could really only be here, and his inquisitive, thoughtful, and empathetic lyrical style is as warm as the music, while embracing those darker thoughts. When Gruff sings “I left my dreams in a rental car” on “Silver Lining,” you know how he feels.

The Smile - Wall of Eyes

The Smile – Wall of Eyes (XL)
The second album in less than two years from Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner is a more subdued affair than their debut, but is a grower

The Smile, aka Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and Tom Skinner, did a magical thing in 2022: they reignited my interest in Radiohead. Perhaps they also reignited Yorke and Greenwood, too, as The Smile’s debut album was to these ears the most engaged they’d sounded since maybe In Rainbows, and seeing them live in 2023 made it clear they were having fun. At that show they played a handful of songs that are now on The Smile’s second album, Wall of Eyes, which is a much subtler but no less sophisticated record than the first. This is also the first album from Yorke and Greenwood to not feature Nigel Godrich in some capacity since Radiohead’s debut, but hard to tell if that has anything to do with that. Nothing here calls attention to itself the way “Thing Thing,” “You Will Never Work in Television Again” or “The Smoke” did, but these eight songs hang together better as a whole and grow on you. The most immediate number is probably “Bending Hectic,” which has a misnomer of a title though the strings get very intense (shades of Jonny’s film composition works) before the afterburners kick in for a Big Rock Finish. It’s the only song that might have you looking up from the book you’re reading — the slow-rising “Friend of a Friend” is great too, actually — but the rest of the album is engaging “back to mine” music, and Skinner’s syncopated drumming style pulls everything together in new directions. Wall of Eyes is also a “late night” album that deserves to be played loud. Go ahead, wake the neighbors.

For more thoughts on Wall of Eyes, read Andrew’s review in Notable Releases.

the umbrellas - fairweather friend

The Umbrellas – Fairweather Friend (Slumberland)
Second album from this San Francisco indie-pop group hits all the right notes, even when they’re a little out of tune

San Francisco’s The Umbrellas embrace 40 years of shambolic indiepop, the kind made by fanzine-reading, striped-shirt-and-cardigan-wearing folks who mix big hooks and catchy choruses with warbly guitars and dream of visiting the Glasgow library for a Stephen Pastel sighting. They are clearly students of the genre, and tip their hat to some of the janglemasters of the form, including The Pastels, The Wedding Present, Comet Gain, Beat Happening, Orange Juice and others. Fairweather Friend is the band’s second album and a big sonic leap from their debut, with the production giving the kind of oomph you could tell the band have live, not to mention more nuanced arrangements (strings, keyboards, harmonies). The songs were great on that first album but everything felt a little flat. The Umbrellas also play to their strengths here as well, namely the vocal interplay between Matt Ferrera and Morgan Stanley. More than anything, Fairweather Friend sounds like a band that know they’ve got the songs, know they can really play, and are having a great time doing so without overthinking it. To paraphrase the album’s first song (and Orange Juice), three cheers to The Umbrellas!

finnoguns wake stay young EP

Finnoguns Wake – Stay Young (What’s Your Rupture)
Former Royal Headache vocalist Shogun heads in new sonic directions with his latest band

Shogun has one of those instantly identifiable voices, a dude who belts it out with every kilowatt of personal energy he has at his disposal. It was the guiding force in his band Royal Headache and his subsequent (short-lived) group Shogun & The Sheets, and it still is with his new thing, Finnoguns Wake. This one’s a little different though, as the band is a collaboration with Finn Berzin, who is a couple decades Shogun’s junior, who also writes and sings lead. (The band name is a portmanteau of their names, not to mention a nod to James Joyce.) The two bonded over music, everything from Husker Du to Oasis, and judging by their debut EP it was kismet that brought them together. As much as I loved Royal Headache (especially live), the music Finnoguns Wake make is a much better fit with Shogun’s pipes. Their hazy, anthemic brand of post-punk really soars with his voice, especially on opener “Blue Skies” which might be the best song Shogun has been apart of. (In this context, he sounds closer to The Sound’s Adrian Borland or Cleaners From Venus’ Martin Newell.) “Strawberry Avalanche,” Shogun’s other spotlight song, is pretty great too, leaning into those shared Oasis influences hard. Finn is no slouch either, bringing a slightly lower key vocal quality to “So Nice” and “Lovers All” which makes for a nice contrast. Listening, I have two questions: when will Finnoguns Wake play North America, and what happens when Shogun and Finn sing together? I hope we find out both soon.

vanishing twin - life drummer

Vanishing Twin – Life Drummer (Sub Pop)
This London-based group prove “anything can be a drum” on this new 7″ from the Sub Pop Singles club

God bless the Sub Pop Singles Club which allows the label to put out records by artists they love but didn’t sign, and also gives those artists a little room to stretch their wings. One of the two January releases in the club is this 7″ from London’s Vanishing Twin, featuring three new songs that take them in new, experimental directions. Life Drummer‘s title track has them exploring “new rhythmic worlds where anything can be a drum,” and they take that idea literally. Vanishing Twin have an incredible drummer, Valentina Magaletti, who could make just about anything sound good and her rhythms here hit hard for a killer, quirky groove while singer Cathy Lucas reads off a litany of potential instruments: “garbage can, plastic bucket, empty jars, bottles of all descriptions.” I’m not sure if all those (and more) were used here, but I wouldn’t doubt it. (The lyrics were adapted from a chapter in W.A. Mathieu’s The Listening Book titled, yes, “Life Drummer.”) The other two songs — “Inarisan” and “Non Guardare” — are not as immediate but are just as interesting and creative rhythmically. Is this a sneak peak at their next album or a flight of fancy? In any case I’m glad it, and the Sub Pop singles club, exists.

See the cover art and tracklist below.

Perhaps due to having seen Meeting People Is Easy too many times (and not attending anything Radiohead related in a long time), but “fun” is not a word I associate with Thom Yorke. But he was clearly having a blast at The Smile‘s show on Friday night at Forest Hills Stadium, grooving to their music and frequently encouraging the crowd to go wild. It may be the thrill of the new: the trio, which also includes Thom’s Radiohead bandmate Jonny Greenwood and former Sons of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner, have been on a blaze of creative activity over the last two years. “We’re a new band,” Yorke told the crowd, “So we’ve got lots of new songs.” In addition to playing almost all of their excellent debut album, The Smile devoted a third of their Forest Hills set to new material, all of which was good and included their just-released single “Bending Hectic.” Will we get their second album this year?

While not drastically different from Radiohead, The Smile have their own pared-down vibe and part of the appeal is getting to see Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood cook in different ways. Skinner brings a syncopated style to the table which in turn seems to have inspired both Yorke and Greenwood, who both have the most fun in The Smile playing bass. Greenwood in particular, when he locks in with Skinner, is a real treat, though Thom gets The Smile’s best bassline in “The Smoke,” which is clearly the fan favorite and was one of the Friday’s highlights. I doubt I was the only person to leave the show with that bassline on a loop their head.

Saxophonist and composer Robert Stillman, who is opening on this tour (and did so last year), joined The Smile for nearly half the songs of the set, including show-opener “Pana-vision,” new songs “Teleharmonic” and “Colours Fly,” “The Smoke,” and “You Will Never Work in Television Again.” He adds a lot to The Smile, but his opening set is maybe not the best choice for a bit outdoor show like this. But it was an all-around lovely evening and Forest Hills Stadium, which is big but not too big, is always a fun place to see a show.

37 New Songs Out Today https://www.brooklynvegan.com/37-new-songs-out-today-8/ Sat, 17 Jun 2023 00:54:50 +0000 Honeybee

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

BETHANY COSENTINO – “EASY”

Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino released second single off her upcoming solo LP, a heartfelt piano ballad with crystal clear lyrics. Of “Easy,” Bethany says, “I had been thinking a lot about where my life was at 35 and how different it was from where I pictured I’d be. I’ve been writing love songs for a really long time, but this is the first love song I’ve ever written that feels … healthy. When I’m spinning and doubting myself and my life choices, tripping out on how dark the world feels, I remember the unconditional love of my partner and it snaps me back into reality and reminds me of what actually matters.”

THE PRETENDERS – “I THINK ABOUT YOU DAILY” FT JONNY GREENWOOD

“It was a genuine honor to score strings for Chrissie,” says Jonny Greenwood of his work on The Pretenders’ new single. ‘The arrangement wrote itself because of THAT voice. She’s one of the greatest singers in popular music, and her continuing passion for creation was an inspiring experience from first the email to the last note of the recording.” The Pretenders’ new album, Relentless, is out in September.

CAKES DA KILLA – “SEX DRIVE”

“Sex Drive” is the newest offering from Jersey house/hip hop artist Cakes Da Killa, a razor-sharp track with high-speed lyrics, tight production, and catchy hooks. Says Cakes, “With the rise of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, I’m inspired to live louder. ‘Sex Drive’ is an in-your-face anthem about owning your sexuality; linking up with platinum-selling and legendary Baltimore Club producer Mighty Mark to make it a club banger was a no brainer!”

JORJA SMITH & NIA ARCHIVES – “LITTLE THINGS REMIX”

Jorja Smith and fellow Brit Nia Archives teamed up for a remix of Jorja’s newest single “Little Things.” Nia flips the track with a harder house beat, as she explains, “‘Little Things’ is a big summer tune!! As soon as i heard it i had to flip it into a little jungle riddim in my sets! I’ve been playing it out the past few weeks and it’s going offfff – all tha girlies have been luvin it which is cute.”

KENNYHOOPLA – “SABOTAGE//”

KennyHoopla worked with Travis Barker again for his upcoming EP Blink And You’ll Miss It, and today he’s released a track from it, “Sabotage//.” The song embraces tons of styles–pop punk and indie rock among them–for a unique sound and blunt lyrics “about becoming so self-aware as a person you end up being restricted by invisible boundaries and blurred lines,” according to Kenny.

NORAH JONES – “CAN YOU BELIEVE”

Just ahead of her UK and European tour, Norah Jones has shared single “Can You Believe.” It’s soulful and sweet, and hints at a studio album coming after the tour.

COI LERAY – “RUN IT UP”

“Run It Up” is Coi Leray’s shiny new single, the third off her upcoming sophomore LP COI. The song features a threadbare synth-and-bass beat to accompany Coi’s breakneck verses, articulated in her sweet, ultra-cool voice.

MAIYA THE DON – “TRUTH IS FREESTYLE”

Brooklyn rapper Maiya The Don delivered hard-hitting “Truth Is Freestyle” today, rife with quotable lyrics–including hook “Truth is, bitches twice my age with half my bag/PSA to all these weak-ass hoes, kiss my ass.”

VICTORIA MONÉT – “ON MY MOMMA”

Victoria Monét is prepping her LP Jaguar II, and today she released third single, horn-accented R&B cut “On My Momma.” “On My Mama is the soundtrack to positive affirmations!” Victoria says. “Singing the lyrics about yourself will change your frequency and elevate a positive mental state. The words speak not only to physical features but to a feeling too because I believe when you feel good, you look even better! Give yourself the words you need to hear because it’s true – you look good! There’s no one like you and that’s on ya mama. Enjoy being yourself witcha fine ass!”

BIG BOSS VETTE – “ION NEED”

“Ion Need” is the latest from Big Boss Vette, a confident, boastful single with a classic trap beat from the St. Louis native. It’ll be featured on her upcoming Resilience EP.

SAUCY SANTANA – “WHOLE FAMILY” (ft. FLO MILLI)

Saucy Santana and Flo Milli are a perfect pair on this new sassy rap banger.

RIP DUNES (MATTHEW IWANUSA OF CAVEMAN) – “IN REAL LIFE”

Caveman frontman Matthew Iwanusa has released his debut solo single as RIP Dunes. “‘In Real Life’ is about coming to terms with reality in a situation and realizing it’s time for a change,” says Iwanusa, who says ’80s groups like The Cure, The Church and Echo & The Bunnymen. “I like the dark elements of that music.”

SPIRITUAL CRAMP – “NAH, THAT AIN’T IT”

San Francisco’s Spiritual Cramp mix mid-’00s Strokes with ’90s Britpop and a little ’80s new wave, as you can hear on their catchy new single.

HR of BAD BRAINS – “EVERYTHING YOU DO” (ft. NICK HEXUM of 311)

Bad Brains vocalist HR has released a new reggae song, and he gets an assist from 311 vocalist Nick Hexum on it.

BLUT AUS NORD – “THE ENDLESS MULTITUDE”

French black metal veterans Blut Aus Nord will release new album Disharmonium – Nahab on August 25 via Debemur Morti Productions, and here’s the epically heavy new single.

OUT OF LOVE – “NO FAKES ALLOWED”

UK punks Out of Love will release their new EP Welcome To The Luv on August 11 via Secret Friends/Venn Records, and and here’s the punchy, catchy lead single.

HONEYBEE – SOFT AND LESS KIND EP

Cleveland punkgazers Honeybee have dropped this new EP, and if you’re into stuff like Cloakroom and Pity Sex you might wanna give this a spin.

PORCH COFFIN – “ROSEN HOTEL”

Porch Coffin’s “Rosen Hotel” is a gritty, anthemic punk banger in the vein of stuff like Hot Water Music and Strike Anywhere.

REVILER – “FEAR AND ISOLATION”

South Carolina hardcore band Reviler have been making their mark lately, and now they’ve signed to Upstate Records and dropped this impassioned, aggressive new single.

CELESTIAL SANCTUARY – “BIOMINERALIZATION (CELL DEATH)”

UK death metallers Celestial Sanctuary have announced a new album, Insatiable Thirst For Torment, due August 25 via Church Road. This lead single is some genuinely beastly stuff.

MILA LA MORENA – “CAÍSTE DEL CIELO”

Mila La Morena brings their “bisexual goth-reggaeton” to this woozy jam.

MYKE TOWERS – “HORA CERO”

Puerto Rican rapper Myke Towers is back with some triumphant, horn-fueled trap.

CKAY – “CAPTURE MY SOUL” (ft. JOEBOY)

Nigerian pop singer CKay has released a deluxe edition of Sad Romance, featuring this minimal new track with Joeboy.

MAXO KREAM & BFB DA PACKMAN – “FATT BLACC TWINS”

Two very charismatic rappers, Maxo Kream and Bfb Da Packman, have teamed up for the super fun “Fatt Blacc Twins.”

M.A.G.S. – “DESTROYER”

M.A.G.S. have released this riffy, power-poppy new single.

CAROLINE SPENCE – “PERENNIAL”

Nashville singer/songwriter Caroline Spence has shared an intimate, bare-bones new song called “Perennial,” which she calls “the first music I’ve released on my own terms in a long while.”

T.F. & 2 ELEVEN – “HONOR THE GIFT” (ft. JAY WORTHY)

’90s-style West Coast rappers T.F. & 2 Eleven will release Skanless Levels 4 next week (6/23). It features Roc Marciano, Rome Streetz, Trizz, and Jay Worthy, the last of whom is on new single “Honor the Gift.”

DRO KENJI – “OVER & OVER”

In addition to appearing on the new Mike Dimes album that’s out today, South Carolina sing-rapper Dro Kenji has also shared this new emo-rap ballad.

BIG JADE – “SOULMATE” (ft. FREDO BANG)

Texas rapper Big Jade has a new project in the works for Alamo Records, and it’ll include this melodic new song featuring Fredo Bang.

WORLD PEACE – “PENANCE UNENDING”

Oakland powerviolence band World Peace will release new LP It Is Written on July 7 via Twelve Gauge, and here’s the 20-second lead single.

SUMMER DEAN – THE BIGGEST LIFE

So many good new albums are out today, and if you like raw, honest country music, you shouldn’t miss this one.

TRACHEOTOMY – “COMPULSORY BLOODSHED”

Florida deathcore revivalists Tracheotomy have signed to 1126 Records and released this stupidly heavy new single.

CHIEF XIAN ATUNDE ADJUAH – “XODOKAN IKO – HU NA NEY”

Chief Xian aTunde Adjuah (fka Christian Scott) has announced his 14th studio album and first under his reclaimed name as a tribal leader. Read more about lead single “Xodokan Iko – Hu Na Ney” here.

24 New Songs Out Today https://www.brooklynvegan.com/24-new-songs-out-today-47/ Fri, 19 May 2023 01:00:47 +0000 https://www.brooklynvegan.com/24-new-songs-out-today-47/ Logan Ledger

KING KRULE – “IF ONLY IT WAS WARMTH”

“If It Was Only Warmth” is the kind of late night tale King Krule does so well, all intimate ambience. King Krule’s new album Space Heavy is out June 9 via Matador.

MAN ON MAN – “TAKE IT FROM ME” & “HUSH” FT. J MASCIS

Man On Man (Roddy Bottum & Joey Holman) will release their new album Provincetown in a month and they’ve just shared two songs which both feature noted indie rock shredder J. Mascis. “Provincetown, the town where we recorded our new record has a way of providing a landscape that spurns friendship and growth and creative fertility. We’d been friends with J Mascis for a while but it wasn’t until the summer of 2022 that we were able to lean into our relationship with him and his family and take things to a new creative plateau. This epic rock bomb was begging for the wizardry that only J could provide and we feel so fortunate to have him onboard.”

KYLIE MINOGUE – “PADAM PADAM”

“I started this album with an open mind and a blank page. Unlike my last two albums there wasn’t a ‘theme,’ it was about finding the heart or the fun or the fantasy of that moment and always trying to service the song,” says Kylie Minogue of her new album Tension. “I wanted to celebrate each song’s individuality and to dive into that freedom. I would say it’s a blend of personal reflection, club abandon and melancholic high.” This is the bouncy first single.

MAPACHE – “PEOPLE PLEASE”

Mapache have announced a new album, Swinging Stars, due August 18 via Innovative Leisure, and lead single “People Please” is a nice dose of ’70s-style folk-pop.

KALI – “AREA CODES” (ft. LUH TYLER)

Georgia rapper Kali’s recent Ludacris-interpolating single “Area Codes” has been blowing up on TikTok and stuff, and now it gets a new remix featuring teenage rap phenom Luh Tyler.

ICEWEAR VEZZO – “BACK ON ROAD”<?b>

Detroit rapper Icewear Vezzo is gearing up for new project Live From the 6, and it’ll feature this ominous, subwoofer-rattling new single.

LADY LAMB – “CRANE YOUR NECK (STILL HUNGRY VERSION)”

Lady Lamb is releasing 5xLP box set In The Mammoth Nothing of The Night, featuring a remastered version of her 2013 album Ripely Pine and 23 new studio recordings. One of those is the new “Still Hungry Version” of one of her most beloved songs, “Crane Your Neck.” “‘Crane Your Neck’ is one of those songs that has always felt full of life when I sing it,” Aly Spaltro says. “I wanted to make a current version of it to show that after so many years together, it’s as alive as it was when I wrote it.”

LOGAN LEDGER – “GOLDEN STATE”

Having recently released a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple,” Nashville singer/songwriter Logan Ledger has now announced a new album, Golden State, due September 8 via Rounder Records. His love of ’70s folk-rock continues on this one–some definite George Harrison vibes.

DEARY – “BEAUTY IN ALL BLUE SATIN”

UK dreampop group deary are back with a new single, which the band say was inspired by Interpol’s Turn on the Bright Lights but “Beauty in all Blue Satin” in more on Cocteau Twins’ world of sound.

JD PINKUS (BUTTHOLE SURFERS) & TALL TALL TREES- “FUNGAL MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN”

Butthole Surfers’ JD Pinkus has made a new album with Tall Tall Trees (Mike Savino), titled Ponder Machine, that will be out June 30 via Shimmy-Disc. “We began recording with the semblance of a plan and soon abandoned that plan to chase rabbits,” says Savino. “I honestly cannot remember recording much of this music, not due to substance or faulty memory, but because I completely let go. I became a spectator. The entire record feels like a collective fever dream and I will cherish the time we spent making it for a long long time.” This is some eerie, gothy banjo ambience as you can hear on “Fungal Mountain Breakdown.”

WHO IS SHE? (CHASTITY BELT, TACOCAT, LISA PRANK) – “THURSDAY”

Pacific Northwest indie supergroup Who Is She? — Lisa Prank’s Robin Edwards, Tacocat’s Bree Mckenna and Emily Nokes, and Chastity Belt’s Julia Shapiro – got headlines for being canned as the Seattle Kraken House Band after dissing Amazon’s Jeff Bezos. That may boost their recognition a little as they announce their second album, Goddess Energy, which will be out August 25 via Father/Daughter. The first single, released appropriately on a Thursday, is pretty catchy. Say the group: “We are big fans of day of the week songs like ‘Manic Monday’ and ‘Friday I’m in Love,’ and we realized there weren’t enough songs about Thursday. So we decided to write one!”

DEXYS (FKA DEXYS MIDNIGHT RUNNERS) – “THE FEMININE DIVINE”

Kevin Rowland describes the title track to Dexys’ new album as, “Overcome with regret and at last glimpsing how women might actually feel, the man gets honest and admits how afraid of women he has been, and how fear has driven so many of his actions. He now sees and acknowledges women’s inherent power: if anything, women are superior; they are goddesses. He sincerely pledges to be different in the future.”

BLUR – “THE NARCISSIST”

Blur are back, having surprised announced their ninth album, The Ballad of Darren, today. It’s out in July but you can check out the first single now.

KURT VILE (ft. his daughters) – “CONSTANT REPEAT” (CHARLI XCX COVER)

Kurt Vile has released a cover of Charli XCX’s “Constant Repeat” for Amazon, and it features his daughters Awilda (13) and Delphine (10) on backing vocals. The whole thing is very sweet, and he also manages to make it basically sound like a Kurt Vile song. Listen at Amazon and read what Kurt had to say about the cover here.

KOYO – “YOU’RE ON THE LIST (MINUS ONE)”

Long Island hardcore-infused emo band Koyo have announced their debut full-length album, Would You Miss It?, due in September via Pure Noise. It features guest vocals from The Movielife’s Vinnie Caruana, Glassjaw’s Daryl Palumbo, and Vein.fm’s Anthony DiDio, and the first single is “You’re On the List (Minus One).” Read more here and pick up our exclusive tri-color vinyl variant.

TALKING KIND (SPRAYNARD) – “DAMN SHAME”

Spraynard (and Big Nothing) singer/guitarist Pat Graham now has a new project, Talking Kind, and judging by his debut single “Damn Shame,” he’s exploring a much softer side with this one. Read more about it here.

DUDU TASSA & JONNY GREENWOOD – “TAQ OU-DUB” FT. NOUR FRETEIKH

Jarak Qaribak, the new collaborative album from Jonny Greenwood and Dudu Tassa, is out in June, and the latest single is “Taq ou-Dub,” featuring Nour Freteikh. Tassa and Greenwood say, “the first song we recorded for this project was ‘Taq ou-Dub’” It’s an old Lebanese song, now performed by Nour Freteikh and in fact it was the starting point for the entire album, connecting Ramallah, Tel Aviv, Beirut and Oxford. Nour, such an incredible singer, first recorded her vocal track remotely but eventually the three of us got together in person to rehearse and perform—and connect properly. We feel very lucky—and very proud—to have made a song, and a friendship, with such a remarkable musician as Nour.”

OUTER HEAVEN – “ROTTING STONE/D.M.T.”

Pennsylvania death metallers Outer Heaven have announced their sophomore album, Infinite Psychic Depths, and you can read about lead single “Rotting Stone/D.M.T.” here.

The Pretenders announce new album ‘Relentless,’ share new song https://www.brooklynvegan.com/the-pretenders-announce-new-album-relentless-share-new-song/ Thu, 11 May 2023 16:31:51 +0000 https://www.brooklynvegan.com/the-pretenders-announce-new-album-relentless-share-new-song/ The Pretenders

Punk/new wave vets The Pretenders have announced a new album, Relentless, due September 1 via Rhino Records (pre-order). Band leader Chrissie Hynde says of the album title, “I enjoy seeing the various meanings and origins of a word. And I liked the definition: ‘showing no abatement of intensity.’ So when it came to an album title, it seemed fitting. You know…to keep doing it. I think anyone in a band is constantly questioning if they should keep going. It starts as a youthful pursuit and eventually, it makes you wonder, why am I doing this? It’s the life of the artist. You never retire. You become relentless.”

It was produced by veteran mixing engineer David Wrench (whose recent credits include Courtney Barnett, Frank Ocean, The xx, and more and is also one half of audiobooks), and it was written by Chrissie and guitarist James Walbourne. The lineup on the album is rounded out by Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass), and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars), and Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood provided string arrangements for closing track “I Think About You Daily.”

“I met Jonny a couple of times and we’re obviously big fans of him because he’s done some incredible music over the years,” Chrissie says. “I saw him at the Phantom Thread premiere where the film was running on screen with a live orchestra playing. And we spoke afterward and he expressed an interest in doing something one day. I was thrilled and very surprised. So when we had the idea of getting strings on ‘I Think About You Daily,’ he was first choice. Legend!”

The first single is “Let The Sun Come In,” a driving track that isn’t too far removed from the band’s late ’70s / early ’80s classics. Check it out below.

The Pretenders also have some festival appearances and Europe shows with Guns N’ Roses, and all dates are listed below as well.
