Taylor McFerrin

Taylor McFerrin announces new album, shares new song, playing shows

Genre-hopping LA musician/producer Taylor McFerrin (who, yes, is son of Bobby) is following his 2014 debut album Early Riser (Brainfeeder) with the new album Love’s Last Chance on August 16 via AWAL. It features appearances by Kendrick Lamar collaborator Anna Wise, and flutist Elena Pinderhughes, who’s a frequent collaborator of Taylor’s R+R=NOW bandmate Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah. Love’s Last Chance is also the first album Taylor made since his time in R+R, and he credits that group with inspiring his new approach to recording. “I had been obsessed with getting everything on my record absolutely perfect, and it led me to this almost crippling place of self-doubt,” he says. “But the whole R+R album was recorded in five days. It was all about capturing the feeling of the moment, and there was so much freedom and excitement in that.”

Taylor also adds, “I called this album Love’s Last Chance because in life, you don’t get a million opportunities to get love right. Sometimes, with both your art and your relationships, you realize that it’s now or never. For my first time writing and singing my own lyrics, I didn’t want to be messing around with make believe and fantasy. This record is real life.”

The first single is “Now That You Need Me,” which is a very appealing mix of soul, electronics, and jazz, with riveting production and Taylor’s smooth voice leading the way. Listen and check out the tracklist below.

Taylor has a few shows coming up, including one in Brooklyn on October 16 at Rough Trade. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday (7/12) at 10 AM with an AmEx presale underway now.
