David Vandervelde, who released two albums on Secretly Canadian in the late-’00s, has spent a lot of time recently as a member of Father John Misty’s band. He’s got a new musical project with his partner, Tess Shapiro and they say, “The only difference between our on stage and off stage life together, is that on stage we have our clothes on.” Going simply as Tess & Dave, the duo draw from lush ’70s pop, and you may have seen them opening for FJM earlier this year.

Tess & Dave will release their debut EP on August 26 via Friendship Fever. The EP’s opening cut, “Holding My Own Hand,” is a great example of what’s to come, with melting harmonies, swoony strings, a light twang, and what sounds to be the voice of some omnipotent being. The song premieres in this post and you can stream it below.

The duo will open for Father John Misty at Los Angeles’ El Rey Theatre on August 26, and have an EP release show scheduled for September 29 at San Francisco’s The Make Out Room. Their debut album will be out in 2017. Meanwhile check out “Holding My Own Hand,” as well as the EP art and tracklist, below.
