The Bombpops

The Bombpops pay tribute to Enemy You's David Jones with "East and West" cover/video

Last week, punk label Red Scare Industries celebrated its 15th anniversary with the compilation Red Scare Industries: 15 Years of Tears and Beers. Among other things, it includes The Bombpops‘ cover of former Red Scare band Enemy You‘s “East and West” as a tribute to Enemy You singer David Jones, who took his own life in 2015. The Bombpops’ cover stays pretty faithful to the original, though their sugary harmonies give it a nice new twist, and we’re now premiering a video for the song, which is a photo and video of montage of David. It’s a really nice tribute to him — check it out below.

Here’s what Bombpops guitarist/vocalist Jen Razavi tells us about it:

Red Scare is where we got our start and there are many reasons why covering this song for the 15-year comp has been so special for us. In the lyrics there’s a line, “shoebox with old photos, tell stories only she knows…” I wish I had written those lyrics! I’ve kept a shoebox for every year since I was 12, filled with old photos, show flyers, notes from friends, etc. They’re my stories that no one else will ever know. I identify with Audrey (fictitious girl in the song) in a way—it’s sad but cathartic at the same time.

Also, we were listening to this song one of the first times that Poli and her husband hung out. He got in her car and was like, “You like Enemy You too?!” and I think he fell more in love with her right then and there.

When David passed away, it was heartbreaking because he meant so much to some of our closest friends. It’s really hard to watch people you love struggle, but we will always have David’s words and music.

You can pick up the new compilation digitally or on vinyl/CD, and stream the whole thing below.
