The Captain & Tennille's Daryl Dragon, RIP

Daryl Dragon, better known as The Captain in ’70s hitmaking duo The Captain & Tennille, has died of to renal failure (via The Hollywood Reporter). He was 76. Dragon spent time as a touring keyboardist for the Beach Boys from 1967-1972 where he was nicknamed The Captain due to the nautical hat he liked to wear. He met Toni Tennille during his stint with the Beach Boys, and they soon became a pair both onstage and off. They scored their first hit with a cover of Neil Sadaka’s “Love Will Keep Us Together,” and also had hits with “Do That To Me One More Time” and “Muskrat Love.” They also had their own variety show on ABC for the 1976-1977 season. Dragon and Tennille divorced in 2014 but remained close. “He was a brilliant musician with many friends who loved him greatly,” wrote Tennille, who was with Dragon when he died. “I was at my most creative in my life, when I was with him.”

Rest in peace, Captain. Watch some Captain & Tennille performance clips, as well as bits from their variety series, below.

‘Mean’ Gene Okerlund and Bob Einstein, who also died today, were also 76.
