The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess preps new solo LP (stream a track), playing NYC’s New Colossus & SXSW

Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess has announced new solo album I Love The New Sky which will be out May 22 via Bella Union. As opposed to 2012’s Oh No I Love You and 2016’s Same Language, Different Worlds, which were, respectively, collaborations with Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner and Arthur Russell associate Peter Gordon, Tim wrote all the songs alone. Tim says he made the album “in Norfolk, in the middle of the countryside, with the nearest shop eight miles away. There are no distractions, and I guess that way things happen. I wrote everything on acoustic guitar, and the chords were really considered. The guitar lines would lead the melody, and the melody would inform the lyrics – just dreaming away with music.”

The first single is “Empathy For The Devil” which definitely nods towards the Rolling Stones song its title plays off of, but also The Cure’s “Boys Don’t Cry” and Sparks. Yet in the end, Tim really makes this one his own. You can watch the song’s video, directed by AB/CD/CD, below.

Tim will be heading to the US for SXSW, and will stop in NYC to play three intimate shows as part of the 2020 New Colossus festival: Pianos on March 12 with Stealing Sheep, Tallies, The Natvral and more, Berlin on March 13 with Kiwi Jr, Ali Barter and more, and The Delancey on March 14 with Stealing Sheep, Hussy and more. He’ll also be DJing the free Rough Trade party at Arlene’s Grocery on March 14 which has performances by The Orielles, Petrol Girls, Honey Cut and more. New Colossus festival badges are on sale now.

He’s also got UK dates this summer — Tim’s full tour schedule is below.
