What started out as a half-full Studio B on a snowy Saturday night (1/10) had turned into a full-out dance party by the time I left. The dubby, experimental band, Lemonade got the crowd warmed up with an energetic live set around midnight. I enjoyed this performance more than their show at the Annex, but they are still a little more mellow & dubby than what I would listen to regularly.

In any case, by the time Lemonade’s set was over, the crowd which had been attentively bobbing their heads and working up to various levels of dancing began getting down to Holy Ghost‘s set nearly instantly. They were ready to dance – the crowd took the attention they had fixated on Lemonade and literally pivoted ninety degrees, faced the dj booth and just started going at it on the dancefloor. In a time when some people still cringe at the mention of disco, it was really great to see such a warm response to some markedly great examples of the sound (both new and old) from Holy Ghost.

I could see what my only complaint about the entire evening would be when Maggie Horn crept up on the platform in front of the deejay booth about 45 minutes into Holy Ghost’s set – we were only going to get 1 HOUR OF DISCO! It was just cruel…Holy Ghost had such a good groove going, I literally was close to weeping when they stopped. There should be a 2 hour disco minimum!

Disco rant aside, the new Curses! track featuring Maggie Horn was pretty tight and I appreciated it. Following that, some of the Trouble & Bass crew (including the Captain, Drop the Lime, and Star Eyes) traded off on the decks, but I couldn’t make the shift from sweet, sweaty disco to heavy bass so I called it an early night while the still mostly full floor danced on.

This week the slight beginning of the new year dance lull has subsided and we’re back to the usual monstrous amount of dancing to be done. Here are some options for where to get down on Friday, with a post of events for Saturday through next week on its way:

Friday night (1/16) there are a lot of different things going on, all of which look great and are sure to keep you moving regardless of what you end up doing.

Self Titled Magazine is hosting Oscillations at Le Poisson Rouge which features a live performance by Free Blood. The duo whose first full-length, The Singles, came out on Rong/DFA back in November have just finished up a string of west coast shows and are stopping back here before heading out on a small east coast tour in March.

Additionally there will be a live performance from School of Seven Bells who recently played Mercury Lounge and are are soon to be opening for Fujiya & Miyagi. They also opened for M83 back in November and I was pretty pleased with them despite only arriving in time to hear a couple of songs.

Rounding things out with some disco Justin Miller will be deejaying and the Juan Maclean will be doing a special live acid set.

Advanced tickets available here.

If you’re not in the mood for seeing any bands and prefer to keep your evening purely dj oriented, this month’s
One Step Beyond party presented with The Fader magazine, features Tim Sweeney of Beats In Space (who was recently interviewed by URB magazine) and Bianca Grimshaw whose

…diverse sets range from electro and dance punk to kuduro, hyphy, Baltimore club, baile funk and beyond. Bianca’s emphasis is heavy on new music and remixes, but anything danceable is on the menu.

Tickets are $20, which includes cosmic visuals by Fuevoz (with VJs SeeJ and Benton-C) and special guest artist Scott Draves, entry to the Museum’s breathtaking Passport to the Universe Space Show, and a pass for one future Museum visit. Tickets are available in advance at www.amnh.org

In addition to being great parties in their own right, one of the best things about One Step Beyond is that it ends early enough (1am) to do something else with your evening, like catch up on sleep (boo!) so you don’t catch a cold or…

continue disco-ing the night away at APT. This Friday Trus’me, whose album Working Nights was recently named 14th best LP on the BBC Worldwide Awards 2008, has come all the way from Manchester for the debut night of his new monthly residency where you can…

Expect to hear all corners of the record shop – from the past, present and of course the future…

I can tell you from the past two times I saw Trus’me deejay this year that this is absolutely true. His sets incorporate classic house, soul, and disco tracks with his own tracks and edits, striking a flawlessly mixed, perfect balance between old and new (download his mix from Beats In Space at the top of his post). He’s brought in Linkwood and Kon & Amir for this installment of the party – don’t miss it!

Full info is on the flyer below and be sure to add Trus’me NYC to your friends on Facebook or sign up for the mailing list here to be informed of future parties.
