The Go-Betweens announce Vol. 2 of archival ‘G Stands for Go-Betweens’ box set series

go-betweens

Domino Records launched an archival series for seminal Australian band The Go-Betweens back in 2014 with the first volume of the “G Stands for Go-Betweens” box sets, featuring their first three albums remastered on vinyl, a compilation of their early singles and lots more. Five years later the second one is finally coming out. G Stands for Go-Betweens Vol 2 will be released on December 6 and includes five vinyl albums, five CDs and a 112-page book.

At the heart of the box set are vinyl reissues of The Go-Betweens’ three “golden period” albums — 1986’s Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express, 1987’s Tallulah and 1988’s 16 Lovers Lane — all remastered from the original analogue tapes. There’s also an 18-song double LP of the band performing at London’s legendary Town & Country Club on May 10th, 1987, right before Tallulah was released. The CDs include a collection of 28 demos that McLennan and Forster recorded for what was supposed to be the group’s seventh album, before the band ended up splitting in 1989. Some of those songs would end up on McLennan and Forster’s solo albums, but it’s the first time any of these have been officially released. The CDs also include b-sides, radio sessions and more.

The book has tons of archival photos and extensive historical liner notes from founding member Robert Forster, along with additional pieces from guest essayists, fans and contemporaries, and there is also a poster and a Liberty Belle And The Black Diamond Express songbook with sheet music for the entire album.

G Stands for Go-Betweens Vol 2 is available for pre-order now and, like with the Vol. 1, the first 400 orders also get a book from the late Grant McLennan’s library (some of which were signed and dated by Grant at the time of purchase). You can check out the box set tracklist — watch videos for “Spring Rain” from Liberty Belle & The Black Diamond Express, and “Streets of Your Town” from 16 Lovers Lane — below.

Meanwhile, Robert Forster will be on his first North American tour in 10 years in November, supporting this year’s terrific Inferno. That tour hits Brooklyn on November 16 at the Bell House (tickets). All dates are listed below.
