The Grammys officially returning to NYC in 2018 (first time in 15 years)
As expected, The Grammys will be back in New York City next year for the first time since 2003. (It’s been in Los Angeles since.) The 2018 Grammys, which is the 60th edition, will happen Jan. 28, 2018 at Madison Square Garden. The announcement came Tuesday morning at a press conference held by NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio and executives from MSG, CBS and the Recording Academy. “There is no better place for music’s biggest night than the world’s greatest city,” said de Blasio. “Bringing these awards back to the city will allow us to further support and foster the music industry in New York.” Watch a video announcement, featuring Spike Lee, Cyndi Lauper, Tony Bennet, Q-Tip, Maxwell, Grandmaster Flash and more, above.
“It had always been something I had thought was of interest to us; it was really all about the details,” Neil Portnow, president of the Recording Academy, told Billboard. “We’ve been in L.A. for many years; we used to bounce back and forth from time to time. With the East Coast being the home for half the membership of the Academy — certainly there’s a very vibrant, vital part of the music industry on the East Coast and in New York — and given that this is an anniversary year for us, it’s a special chance to celebrate.”
