The Burgerama Caravan of All-Stars rolled through NYC last weekend, stopping at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday (10/5) for a sold out show. While The Growlers were the official headliners, Burger Records itself seemed to be the star of the show and seem to be a lifestyle choice as much as a label or record store, promoting good time OC party vibes throughout the night. Apart from the headliners, most bands’ sets were short and the sceney crowd seemed to be there for everybody.

The highlight of the evening for me was Gap Dream, aka Ohioan Gabe Fulvimar who moved to Burger HQ in Fullerton, CA to make his new album, Shine Your Light. (Like, literally. He moved into a storage room in Burger’s warehouse.) The new album (which is great) is synth-and-drum-machine heavy and the live band, just guitar-bass-keys, reflected this. Normally no live drummer is an immediate strike against the band in my book, but Gabe’s onstage charisma won me over almost immediately. Looking like he stepped straight out of WKRP in Cincinatti, Gabe is a confident charmer and the word “superstar” definitely popped into my head watching him work the crowd.

The rest of the show was a little more trad garage styles, ranging from party punk (White Fang and Together Pangea whose wild set security was maybe not expecting), ’60s Phil Spector pop (Habibi, whose line-up has changed significantly since I last saw them), psych-pop (Cosmonauts), and Colleen Green‘s winning solo set that came early in the night. The Growlers’ crunchy party rock finished off the night. My only real disappointments of the night were that A) Gap Dream didn’t play just a little longer and B) they sold out of Burger Records t-shirts early in the night.

More pics from Burgerama at Bowery (minus openers Habibi, who our photographer missed) below…
