The Heavy Lowdown: new Lord Mantis music, Misery Index announces new LP, weekend shows +++ more

Welcome to this week’s HLD! There’s a shitload of cool live stuff going on this weekend, so let’s get that all out of the way first:
Tonight (2/28): Three good options to choose from! Local(ish) prog-sludgsters East of the Wall are kicking off their SXSW-bound tour with Diamond Plate at The Omega Order Warehouse, with support from fresh Prosthetic Records signees So Hideous (whom we’ve been fans of for a bit), Meek Is Murder, Hammer Fight, & Dead Empires. The show is sponsored by Gun Hill Brewery, is BYOB, and carries a $5 suggested donation. Meanwhile, Full of Hell & Mutilation Rites are bringing their own tour to a close with a show at the Acheron with Blackest (tix). Additionally, the Psalm Zero-curated Chaos Bodies series is continuing at Trans Pecos with appearances by Oneirogen, Feast of the Epiphany, and my buds Epistasis, whom we debuted a new song by yesterday. Tomorrow (3/1): Brooklyn Night Bazaar is getting unusually heavy with Caspian, Junius, A Storm of Light, & Advaeta (RSVP for line skippage). Boston crust/doom wrecking ball Morne is hitting Saint Vitus alongside Force & Fire (AKA the clearest successor to defunct local greats Unearthly Trance) & Iron Force (tix). Tech-death stalwarts Malignancy are returning to Blackthorn 51 in Queens with Orbital Frame & Immortal Suffering in tow.
Sunday (3/2): No Shields are playing the Acheron with Richmond’s Ravn and Pittsburgh’s Dendritic Arbor, along with locals Throaat (tix). Don’t forget to keep an eye on our metal show calendar for the latest. It rules.

Maryland deathgrind institution Misery Index have announced that their upcoming fifth album will be entitled The Killing Gods. It will see a May 23 release via Season of Mist.
Chicago sludge/black metal act Lord Mantis have debuted the first song from their upcoming Profound Lore debut, Death Mask, which drops on April 29. Stream it below, but watch out for the NSFW art.
As we discovered on our East Village Radio show this week, members of Tombs, Batillus, Hull, and Vaura have teamed up to work on an album that will almost certainly draw many uses of the dreaded “SG” word.
