In June 1981, The Kitchen threw itself a behemoth tenth birthday party-cum-fundraiser at a Times Square megaclub. Dubbed Aluminum Nights, the marathon event saw a capacity audience of many hundreds — including, all seem to recall, Mick Jagger backstage — enjoy a diversified array of the downtown sounds being nurtured at the crossroads of The Kitchen’s music program. In 2011, as part of its 40th anniversary season, The Kitchen presents a distilled refraction of the Aluminum Music performed over that memorable weekend.

As mentioned in “What’s Going on Friday,” The Kitchen‘s Aluminum Nights will celebrate its anniversary TONIGHT! The celebration begins at 8PM ($12 gets you in) with a performance from industrial percussionist Z’EV and no-wave from Bush Tetras. Saturday the anniversary party continues as “former Kitchen Music Director and Aluminum Nights co-curator George Lewis” presents Homage to Charles Parker with a backing band of “Amina Claudine Myers (piano/organ), Reggie Nicholson (percussion), Matana Roberts (alto saxophone) and Richard Teitelbaum (synthesizers)”. Peter Gordon’s Love of Life Orchestra completes Saturday evening and the weekend (8PM start time, tickets).

Bush Tetras also took part in the Mudd Club reunion at the Delancey last year, as did Richard Lloyd who is playing the upcoming Joey Ramone Birthday Bash. Some video highlights from that event are below…
