The National have been doing lots of covers on tour (and Taylor Swift is a fan)

The National at Basilica Hudson in July (more by P Squared)

The National began their tour behind this year’s excellent Sleep Well Beast with an intimate album release show at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom that included guest appearances by Sufjan Stevens and Doveman. Then they headed to Europe, and we mentioned that their tour opener in Ireland featured guest appearances by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon and Lisa Hannigan, plus a cover of Cat Power‘s “Maybe Not,” and the band have been continuing to do covers at bring out guests at shows. Their pal This Is The Kit joined at one of the London shows, and other covers included Talking Heads‘ “Heaven,” Queen‘s “I Want To Break Free,” and New Order‘s “Love Vigilantes,” the latter of which was performed in New Order’s hometown of Manchester. Watch videos of each cover below.

The National’s tour includes a big NYC show on October 6 at Forest Hills Stadium with Daughter (tickets). Will they do any covers or bring out any guests at that show?

In other news, Taylor Swift showed her love for the new National album today, by putting two songs from it on her ‘Songs Taylor Loves’ Spotify playlist. The playlist also includes Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, The xx, Bon Iver AND Justin Vernon’s band Volcano Choir, Lana Del Rey, Liam Gallagher, Kendrick Lamar, Dum Dum Girls, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Chris Stapleton, Haim, and more. You can hear the playlist below.
