The Old 97's and Rhett Miller prep new LPs (listen to Rhett's "Total Disaster")

The Old 97’s and frontman Rhett Miller both have new albums coming out this fall. Rhett’s new solo album is called The Messenger and will be out November 9 via ATO. He made it with Sam Cohen who produced and played on it (along with Sam’s band). “I wanted this record to be less safe,” Miller says. “I wanted to put myself in the hands of a producer who was going to do things that I didn’t expect; I wanted to play with people I didn’t know and be surprised by what they came up with. And all of that really came to pass. That’s what you’re getting this record. You’re getting this locked-in rhythm section with a crazy, psychedelic guitar maestro playing along with me singing my songs about depression and insecurity.” You can listen to “Total Disaster” from the LP below.

The Old 97’s, meanwhile, release Love the Holidays, on November 16 via ATO and that features originals and a cover of standard New Year’s song “Auld Lang Syne.” Tracklist is below.

As mentioned, The Old 97’s Holiday Extravaganza! tour starts just after Thanksgiving, with Rhett doing a solo set to open the show, and “DIY punk rock magician” CaseyMagic will provide illusions. Dates include Asbury Park, NJ’s Wonder Bar on December 13 and Manhattan’s Irving Plaza on December 14. Tickets for Irving Plaza are on presale now (password: MUSICGEEKS) and both shows go on sale Friday (9/21) at 10 AM to the general public. Rhett’s also got solo headline shows — all dates are listed below.
