The Posies announce first album in 5 years (listen to "Unlikely Places") and "secret shows" North American tour

The Posies (Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow) will release Solid States on May 20 via My Music Empire. It’s been a rough last year for the Posies. Drummer Darius Minwalla died of unknown causes last year. Then they lost longtime bassist Joe Skyward to cancer last month, and both Auer and Stringfellow relocated from Seattle to Europe. Their melodic gifts remain intact, though the new album sounds little different than their overtly Beatles/Big Star-y previous records. Says Auer:

I think it’s our most adventurous record to date. There was the conscious idea to strive for something different from the Posies of past, to use different colors and flavors. That was the plan, but then life had its way with our concepts and schedules, and threw many profound, out-of-the-park curveballs in our direction. By this point, we’d already painted ourselves into a musical corner, which ultimately left us no other option but to figure our way out, bit by bit, wave form by wave form.

You can listen to new single “Unlikely Places,” premiering in this post, and previous single “Squirrels and Snakes,” and check out album art and tracklist, below.

Auer and Stringfellow will be taking The Posies on the road this spring for what they’re calling the Solid States Secret Shows tour. Dates and cities are announced but locations will only be revealed to those who buy tickets (and won’t be revealed till the day before the show). None of the shows are in traditional clubs and the NYC stop is May 12 with a 75-person capacity. Tickets to the NYC show are on sale now. All dates are listed below.
