The Shaggs’ ‘Philosophy of the World’ getting Light in the Attic reissue w/ NYC release/tribute show

The Shaggs‘ ramshackle 1969 debut album, the outsider art cult classic Philosophy of the World, is getting a vinyl reissue via the good people at Light in the Attic which will be out September 9. The record, which Kurt Cobain put at #5 on his 50 Favorite Albums list (and a lot of people hate), has been newly remastered (“Will this help?” may be asked by many), and comes with new liner notes by Lenny Kaye, a book featuring unseen photos and other ephemera, and restored artwork in a gatefold jacket. There is also a deluxe package that comes on swirled colored vinyl with a t-shirt designed by Seth Bogart (aka Hunx), a 24×18″ poster, and an enamel “foot foot” pin. You can also buy the t-shirt separately.

Preorders are available now and for those unfamiliar with the surreal, out-of-tune sonic world of the Wiggin sisters, a new video for Philosophy of the World‘s title track, made by animator Joanna Neborsky, makes for a nice little history of the band and introduction. Watch that, and check out a stream of the whole album, below.

There are two celebratory events planned around the reissue. On September 9 at Le Poisson Rouge in NYC, there will be a Shaggs tribute show featuring members of The B-52’s, Dresden Dolls, The Monks, Bush Tetras and more. Tickets are on sale. Then Dot Wiggin will appear at Boston’s Newbury Comics on September 17 for a record signing.
