The Stone moved to the New School (2018 schedule includes Thurston Moore, Secret Chiefs 3, more)

After 13 years in the East Village, John Zorn’s club The Stone had its last show on Avenue C on Sunday (2/25). The Stone’s final show was a John Zorn Improv Night benefit for The Stone and the venue posted a note saying:

WE THANK THE MUSICIANS WHO PERFORMED THERE, THE AUDIENCE WHO CAME TO LISTEN, THE VOLUNTEERS FOR KEEPING THE SPACE GOING AND ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE DONATED TO THE STONE TO KEEP IT ALIVE. BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL!

The Stone’s new location at The New School’s Glass Box Theatre officially began on Tuesday (2/27), kicking off trumpet player Jonathan Finlayson‘s residency which runs through Saturday (3/2). Zorn told The New York Times, “We’re not moving because of any sinister reason. We’re moving simply because it was time for a change. I went in there one day and I said, ‘You know, I think we can do a little better than this.'”

The Stone has been presenting residency shows on Friday and Saturday nights at The Glass Box since last June, and will now host shows there five nights a week, Tuesday – Saturday. Guitarist John Schott hosts a residency from March 6 – 11; drummer Ben Perowsky will host a residency from March 13 – 17; and cellist Theresa Wong hosts a residency from March 27 – 31.

All shows at The Stone are $20 at the door.

The 2018 schedule is up at The Stone’s website, which includes a Bill Frisell residency from August 21  -25; a Secret Chiefs 3 residency from August 28 – 31; Susie Ibarra from October 2 – 6; Erik Friedlander from October 9 – 13; noise artist Okkyung Lee from October 23-27; Marc Ribot from November 13 – 17; Thurston Moore from December 4 – 8; and Ikue Mori from December 11 – 15.
