The Superweaks pay tribute to late bass player Corey on new LP ‘Better Heavens’

Superweaks Better Heavens

The Superweaks (fka The Weaks) are staples of the Philly scene. They share members with Thin Lips, they’ve collaborated with Frances of Hop Along and Mimi of Nona/Year of Glad, they’ve toured released a split with Modern Baseball. The list goes on. The band suffered a tragedy earlier this year, when their bass player Corey Bernard (brother of singer Evan Bernard) suddenly passed away at age 22. The band had broken the news on their Facebook in May:

My baby brother, our bass player Corey passed away today. I loved him so much. It was incredible to be able to write music with him, play unbelievable shows with our favourite bands we could only dream of as children. I will always cherish spending countless hours bickering and farting in the van driving around the country. I will never, ever forget the experiences we have shared. Thank you for always challenging me to be a better person. I will always love you Corey.

The Superweaks posted a few tributes on Facebook to Corey (which you can see below), and a retelling of a dream Evan had where Corey appeared. An official replacement hasn’t been announced yet, but Modern Baseball’s Ian Farmer filled in on a recent tour.

The band are now set to release a new album, Better Heavens, which is dedicated to Corey and uses his old drawings as album artwork. That’s the cover above. The first single is the title track, and it’s another dose of the band’s usual Weezer-meets-Thin-Lizzy formula. Its video, directed by Adam Peditto, premieres right here:
