Scottish indie rock staples The Twilight Sad had a busy year touring and previewing songs off their upcoming album IT WON/T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME, which will be out in January. And this Saturday, frontman James Graham will join the surviving members of Frightened Rabbit for their first performance since Scott Hutchison’s death (in Scotland).

As the year is winding down, we asked James what his favorite albums of the year were, and he sent a list that includes another of Scott Hutchison’s bands, Mastersystem, and another Scottish indie band they’ve long been associated with, We Were Promised Jetpacks. He also picked Mogwai (who are joining The Twilight Sad in opening for The Cure in Glasgow in summer 2019), Low, Mitski, Young Fathers, Christine and the Queens, and more. Check out James’ full list — with commentary on each pick — below.

JAMES GRAHAM’S TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2018

Kathryn Joseph – From When I Wake The Want Is
A beautiful record by a beautiful person. Everyone should know who Kathryn Joseph is.

Low – Double Negative
One of my favourite bands release a beautiful but challenging LP. Music should challenge you. It’s a record that lives with you after you hear it for the first time.

Young Fathers – Cocoa Sugar
One of the most important bands in the world today. I love everything about them.

Mogwai – Kin
Mogwai are one of the most important bands in my life. Without them, my life wouldn’t be the same. “Donuts” & “We’re Not Done” are two of the best songs this year.

Michael Timmons – Bone Coloured
A beautiful debut album by an Artist that is going to go on to do amazing things in his life musically & personally.

We Were Promised Jetpacks – The More I Sleep The Less I Dream
One of the hardest working bands make their best album. Live, they are untouchable.

Mastersystem – Dance Music
I was very proud of my friends. I could tell Scott had a lot of fun making this record. He was very proud of it and I will always be very proud of him.

Christine and The Queens – Chris
A proper Pop Star. This record, her performance and everything she’s about is inspiring.

Aidan Moffatt & RM Hubbert – Here Lies The Body
Aidan is one of my all time favourite lyricists and singers, RM Hubbert is one of my favourite musicians. Together they have made a masterpiece. I love them.

Mitski – Be The Cowboy
I only discovered this record a few days ago. It’s already one of my favourite records this year. I can’t wait to see it performed live.
