The War on Drugs began NYC stay at Terminal 5 (pics, videos, setlist)

The War On Drugs are fresh off releasing their major label debut, A Deeper Understanding, which takes their indie-heartland-rock sound into bigger-sounding territory than ever before. They brought their tour to NYC last night (9/19) for their first of two shows here. This one was at Terminal 5 and they kept their set entirely to the new album and 2014’s great Lost In The Dream, playing every song from the new album except the lengthy lead single “Thinking Of A Place.” Photographer Toby Tenenbaum caught the show and writes:

Tall light prisms decorated the rear of the stage as multicolored laser lights bounced off intricate prism tower arrangement with LED’s inside creating accent color for each song. Not a moment was wasted as the songs flowed from one to the other seamlessly. As for the live set it was like listening to an improved version of the studio recordings with a stunning light show to enhance the experience.

This show had great support from Hold Steady frontman Craig Finn (and his backing band The Uptown Controllers), who released a solo album this year that also pulls from classic heartland rock. Craig will next play NYC when his tour with The Weakerthans’ John K. Samson hits City Winery on Halloween (tickets). The Hold Steady also play four Brooklyn Bowl shows around the holidays.

The War On Drugs’ next NYC show is Friday (9/22) at Central Park SummerStage (tickets), and this one also has a great opener, Land of Talk, who released their first album in seven years this year and also played their own NYC show at Baby’s All Right last night.
