I’m always surprised by which bands are able to make a name for themselves and which others toil away under the shadows. A lot of it, of course, is due to the political machinations of the music industry, but even in the ultra-hyper blog celebrity (of which I am contributing to this very moment), some bands still fail to get their due notice. I believe The Warlocks are one of those bands.

They came out of the late 90s neo-psychedelic scene, along with awesome bands Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Brian Jonestown Massacre, and the sometimes good (but not lately) Dandy Warhols. Each of their albums are different in sound and approach (due to their lineup, which fluctuates from as few as four to as many as ten), while at the same time maintaining a singular sound that is uniquely their own. Their new album Heavy Deavy Skull Lover is practically an instrumental album, with long, repetitive drones, swirling guitar symphonies, and the slow, steady release of a morphine drip. It’s possibly their best album, though Phoenix definitely has its moments.

They’ll be playing three shows in NYC this week – including the Tee Pee records showcase at Luna Lounge. All tour dates, and some videos, below….
