the week in Dance w/ Showtrotta (part 1) (Amanda Blank, One Step Beyond, Dim Mak, Holy Ghost & more)

Amanda Blank

Last week I only made it out to Fixed on Friday. While I wasn’t floored by Annie Mac and Dada Life‘s selections, their energy behind the decks was infectious and had the crowd going wild in the basement of the Tribeca Grand. It was really a great time, regardless of whether you were super into the music, or not. This week there is a lot going on. Consider this you warm-up to CMJ…

Thursday (10/8):

Steve Aoki‘s LA-based label, Dim Mak, heads east to host their second Cloak and Dagger party at Santos. While I missed last month’s party, I heard it was a full-out dance rager, with tons of special guest deejays (including Kid Cudi, Steve Aoki, DJ Mehdi, and Busy P) stopping by (check out the video below for highlights). The announced line-up for this month looks awesome to begin with, even before speculating who might show up:

…an initiative aimed at fostering community collaboration between creatives, startups, and social entrepreneurs in order to bring their ideas to fruition. Beginning with the thriving borough of Brooklyn, The Mapping Project’s goal is to consider how geography and the proximity of an area’s clustered residents can stimulate change through collaboration.

– A new weekly, Proper Thursdays is happening at Le Poisson Rouge with Stretch Armstrong and Eli Escobar.
Runaway is deejaying at Submercer.
– Lots of deejays at Broke Ass Stuart’s F The Recession Party.

False Aristocracy‘s Ether party happens every Thursday at Happy Ending. This week’s guest is Cubic Zirconia.

Friday (10/9):

The Fader’s excellent party in the Museum of Natural History – One Step Beyond, is back! After a great season featuring the likes of Moby, Peanut Butter Wolf, Flying Lotus & Kode 9, and Four Tet among others, things are resuming this Friday with Philly rapper Amanda Blank and deejays Devlin & Darko. I’ve only seen Devlin and Darko deejay once before, but their set was a lot of fun, incorporating some great classics, very current dance tracks, and the unexpected.

DANCE

Over at Webster Hall Steve Aoki is headlining Boys & Girls. I’ve witnessed both very good…and very disappointing sets from him, though I hear his most recent NY set (at Electric Zoo) was awesome. Hopefully if he’ s not in top form, Classixx and Destructo (who are also visiting from LA) will make you move:
