Cut Copy @ Bowery Ballroom – May 14, 2008 (more by Bao)
Cut Copy kicked this week in dance off to a great start. Their show at Bowery on Wednesday was a world better than the one at the Mercury Lounge in March. The sound was flawless and clear which really showcased what a fine-tuned electronic and pop band Cut Copy is. The band goes the extra step, adding in just the right amount of effects and background vocals to give their songs a very full, complete sound. They played a tremendously energetic set which was reciprocated by an equally enthusiastic crowd. Everyone was getting down in their given inches of personal space at the sold-out show. Cut Copy’s set was just about an hour long and featured an excellent mix of songs from their new album In Ghost Colors, as well as some from Bright Like Neon Love. Their exact setlist was….
Out There On the Ice
Time Stands Still
That Was Just a Dream
Nobody Lost, Nobody Found
Lights & Music
Hearts On Fire
Tonight (May 16, 2008) and Saturday there is even more live dance music in town. Does It Offend You, Yeah? (who will also be here in a couple of months supporting Bloc Party) stop in at the Highline Ballroom as part of their North American tour. I’m very interested to see how/how well they are able to translate such electronic-sounding tracks with a live band.
Advanced tickets available here, $12 at the door.
After the show at Highline, DIOYY will be deejaying at Webster Hall for the GBH 10 Year Anniversary which boasts a pretty big line-up (see flyer). While the venue choice has left many scratching their heads I’m just hoping such a big room will make for a cooler environment to catch LA Riots and MSTRKRFT whose recent show at Studio B was made considerably less enjoyable due to the stifling heat.
That will put you in the same borough as Studio B (but not the best spot, subway-wise) where some more live dance music, disco to be precise, will be happening with Hercules & Love Affair.
Ticket info Tickets are sold out, but tour dates, and the video for their great track, “Blind” (that I think we are all hoping Antony will show up to sing…though they say he is definitely not) here.
If you’re one of those people who still thinks disco sucks some other options are:
DJ Wool is going to Berlin from in June, and he made a mix in honor of his trip. DOWNLOAD “DJ Wool – Bye Bye Brooklyn mix” (zShare MP3), and wish him good luck if you hit the party. Mix tracklist here.
Also on Saturday the Martinez Brothers (who are 16 and 19 years old?!) are at Pacha (yes, we know – proceed at your own risk). Free before midnight on the list. $24 advanced tickets available here. The Martinez Brothers will also be on Pacha’s float in this year’s Dance Parade, happening during the day on Saturday.
There’s also always Santos Party House..
What else do you suggest?
