The Who played Pace Gallery (video), detail new LP, share "Ball & Chain"

The Who have officially announced their new album, which is titled WHO, and will be out November 22. The first single is “Ball and Chain,” which was originally titled “Guantanamo” and they’ve been playing on tour this year. You can listen to that below.

“This album is almost all new songs written last year, with just two exceptions,” says Pete Townshend. “There is no theme, no concept, no story, just a set of songs that I (and my brother Simon) wrote to give Roger Daltrey some inspiration, challenges and scope for his newly revived singing voice. Roger and I are both old men now, by any measure, so I’ve tried to stay away from romance, but also from nostalgia if I can. I didn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. Memories are OK, and some of the songs refer to the explosive state of things today.” You can check out cover art and tracklist below.

The Who made the announcement at the opening of the new Pace Gallery in NYC on Thursday night, where Pete and Roger Daltrey did a short acoustic set on the building’s rooftop, including “Pinball Wizard,” “Behind Blue Eyes” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again.” (Questlove DJ’d the party.) Watch Instagram video of that below.

The Who’s “Moving On!” Tour continues through October and includes another NYC-area stop at Jones Beach on September 15 (tickets).
