Throwing Muses released their first album in 10 years, Purgatory/Paradise, and this weekend played two sold-out shows at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom (3/8& 3/9) in support of it. Making the shows extra special: former member (and singer Kristin Hersh’s step-sister) Tanya Donnelly not only opened both shows but also joined Throwing Muses for a few songs including (at Bowery) “Green” from Throwing Muses’ 1986 debut. With the band not playing many shows, the Saturday show had a lot of out-of-town fans in attendance — including some from the UK. Setlist and pics from Saturday are in this post.
Tanya’s opening set had it’s own special guest: Magnetic Fields cellist Sam Davol and singer Claudia Gonson. Her set included some new material — she’s been releasing “Swan Song” EPs via her website — and few Belly songs too (“Slow Dog,” “Low Red Moon”). Pics from her set (including one of the setlist) are in this post.
