Thurston Moore & John Zorn improv NYE shows, Laurie Anderson, Brian Chase & more @ The Stone

Friends and musical icons Thurston Moore and John Zorn teamed up for a celebratory improv set at Rough Trade in Williamsburg last month. Photos if you missed them, are in the gallery above.

That type of show, a bit more high profile when happening at Rough Trade, actually happens almost every night at John Zorn’s non-profit, East Village venue The Stone. Zorn and Moore aren’t always there, but they both will be again this month.

Thurston (guitar) teams again with Zorn (sax), but also Okkyung Lee (cello), Ikue Mori (electronics), and William Winant (percussion), for an 8pm New Year’s Eve show (“ONLY ONE SET AT 8PM, GIVING YOU PLENTY OF TIME TO GET TO YOUR NEW YEAR’S PARTY AND RING IN THE NEW YEAR WITH YOUR FRIENDS! THIRTY DOLLARS”).

Zorn, who also plays the venue with December curator IMA and Ikue Mori on 12/15, later continues his annual tradition of end of year improv set benefit concerts. John “and many special guests” play the venue on 12/28, 12/29, and 12/30.

Other familiar names on December’s lineup include Laurie Anderson (tonight – 12/9). As previously mentioned, she plays with this week’s curator Fred Frith, Okkyung Lee and more. Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto), Yoshimio (Boredoms), and Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs) also play this month.

John Zorn’s “extreme organ trio” Simulacrum makes a rare live appearances on 12/21 and 12/22. That includes John Medeski (organ), Matt Hollenberg (guitar), and Kenny Grohowski (drums).

John Medeski (sans Martin & Wood) returns to the Stone for his own residency from 1/31-2/5.

Chuch Bettis has a residency in April 2017 that will bring Matmos, Mick Barr, Soft Circle’s Hisham Bharoocha and more to the Stone.
