Tim Heidecker & Gregg Turkington made an 'On Cinema' movie, out this fall

Tim Heidecker and Greg Turkington‘s Adult Swim movie review series, On Cinema, is coming to actual cinemas this fall. Mister America, a new movie featuring the fictional On Cinema versions of Heidecker and Turkington and spun out of the show’s universe, has been picked up by Magnolia Features. Variety reports that the film, which is directed by Eric Notarnicola, follows Heidecker’s attempt to break into politics. The synopsis: “In the movie, Heidecker beats a murder charge for selling faulty e-cigarettes at an EDM festival, and mounts a campaign to unseat the San Bernardino District Attorney. His effort to win voters tries to overcome a lack of experience and funding by leaning into the candidate’s personal likability. It does not go well.”

Part of the film was scripted but it also includes Tim campaigning in the real world. “We shot in San Bernardino. Some of it we shot on the street, some of it’s scripted with actors,” Turkington, who you may also know as Neil Hamburger, said on the Kreative Kontrol podcast earlier this year. “I think Tim’s acting in it is just mind-blowing… I think people will find this enjoyable. It’s somewhere between a Christopher Guest–type movie and a Rick Alverson–type movie — like some sort of weird, deep parody of a certain culture, but very, very bleak.” A release date beyond Fall 2019 has not been set, so stay tuned.

Meanwhile, Tim Heidecker just released a new album of songs, What the Brokenhearted Do, which was produced by Foxygen’s Jonathan Rado (who also produced Weyes Blood’s Titanic Rising) and is in a ’70s singer songwriter style (think Harry Nilsson or Randy Newman). He stopped by Scott Aukerman’s Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast this week to talk about the album and other stuff. You can listen to that and the album, below.
