today is Make Music NY (tons of free music, all over the city)
The annual ‘Make Music New York‘ takes over New York City on Tuesday, June 21.
“From 11 in the morning to 10 at night, musicians of all ages, creeds, and musical persuasions — from hip hop to opera, Latin jazz to punk rock — perform on streets, sidewalks, stoops, plazas, cemeteries, parks and gardens. From high school bands to marquee names, MMNY is open to anyone who wants to take part, enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend.”
All events are free to the public. Browse the full schedule at Make Music’s site, but here are some highlights.
Nick Franglen of Lemon Jelly will play a 24-hour piece of improvised music under the Manhattan Bridge.
There will be 17 “Mass Appeal” events which are basically flash mobs of people all playing the same instrument.
There’s the Pop-Up Pianos.
“Heavy Metal under the BQE” will feature sets by Wizardry, La Otracina and others at Union Ave & N. 8th St. It’s one of many things happening in Williamsburg.
Lukcy 13 Saloon, Bar 4 and the Tea Lounge are some of the Park Slope venues participating.
Mike Doughty and Emily Wells are at City Winery.
Tracy Bonham, MAKU Sound System, Ethan Lipton & His Orchestra, and others are at Joe’s Pub.
