Torres announces Merge debut, shares new song, touring with Superchunk

Torres Silver Tongue

Earlier this year, Torres signed to Merge (after being dropped by 4AD in 2018), and promised a new album for 2020. Now, that album has been announced.

It’s called Silver Tongue, and it comes out January 31 via Merge (pre-order). It’s the first Torres album produced solely by main Torres member Mackenzie Scott, and going by the rich-sounding lead single “Good Scare,” it would appear Mackenzie is as good at production as she is at songwriting. It’s fueled by a lush atmosphere and some thunderous drums, with Mackenzie’s unmistakable voice leading the way. She says:

Regarding “Good Scare,” I guess I could say that falling in love is a lot like the Superman crawl. If you’re not familiar with Superman’s crawl, it’s a terrifying maneuver used in spelunking that’s only performed when certain passages are too narrow, so a person has to hold one arm against the body and the other above the head, all while trying to crawl forward. When you fall in love with someone, it’s scary like the Superman’s crawl, but you have no choice but to keep moving forward even though you have no idea what’s ahead of you.

Torres is about to embark on a solo tour opening for her Merge bosses Superchunk on their Foolish 25th anniversary acoustic tour, including the Brooklyn show at Murmrr Theatre on November 7 (tickets).

The day the new album comes out, Torres will be back in Brooklyn for a release show at The Sultan Room (1/31). Tickets are on sale. All dates are listed below.
